A Charge To Keep
2008-01-28 23:24:34
Here is a photo of a painting the G W Bush has hanging in the Oval Office at the White House. It is one of GW's favourites. He likes to tell the story that goes with it. He likes it because the identity projected through the Bush Administration's policies on issues from global warming to preemptive warfare, are based on the premise that Bush is a lone cowboy, rushing headlong to carry out a God-given charge. His followers today tend to see in Bush what he sees in the painting: a brave, daring leader riding fearlessly into the unknown, striking out against unseen enemies, pulling his team behind him, seeking, in the words of Wesley's hymn, "to do my Master's will." They see him as a straight shooter and a straight talker. They take comfort in his religious faith and think he is leading us toward a mountaintop."Source Of course the truth of the painting is somewhat different from the the romantic ideal that GWB sees. The painting is really called “Had His Start Been Fifte ...

Haiku Errors
2008-01-15 06:08:17
Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry known for its simplicity and elegance. In English, haiku are written as three lines, with a syllable count of five, seven, and five on in the first, second, and third line. In The Green Man's opinion nothing softens the blow of a systems failure better than an error message delivered in Haiku. Consider some examples: Seeing my great fault Through darkening blue windows I begin again -- Chris Walsh I'm sorry, there's -- um -- insufficient -- what's-it-called? The term eludes me ... -- Owen Mathews A file that big? It might be very useful. But now it is gone. -- David J. Liszewski and perhaps my favourite Errors have occurred. We won't tell you where or why. Lazy programmers. -- Charlie Gibbs As anyone can see, this adds a sense of elegance to an otherwise exasperating experience. Now researchers at Kyoto have developed a computer program that can write Haiku on your behalf. It may be the dawning of a new era in error messages. Read more here Existing H ...

Polar Bear Pawn
2008-01-09 13:20:49
And further to the previous entry, one of The Green Man's favourite animals, the Polar Bear, which faces a decidedly uncertain future because of the melting of the polar ice cap, has few friends in the US administration. The US Fish and Wildlife Service, it seems, have been unable to quantify the rate at which the polar cap is melting and, as such, cannot regard this species at vulnerable. All right, I admit they are cute, and this undermines the previous post, but the "head-in-the-sand" approach to global warming by the US administration is both expected and extremely disappointing. Without wishing to be anti-American, you guys are the major contributor to this phenonemon. Some spending on a world issue that was not a war would be extremely welcome. Read more here... ...

The White Rumped Vulture
2008-01-09 13:04:17
This is a picture of a white rumped vulture, it is a critically endangered animal, however, like many animals that are not cute, it does not enjoy the support of mindless B-grade celebrities. Never-the-less it performs a valuable role in the ecosystem and the reason it is endangered is because of a chemical, diclofenac, which was fed to sick cows. It happens that this chemical causes kidney damage and death in vultures. Thankfully serving "drug-free", safe carcasses to these endangered birds by Bird Conservation Nepal is bringing them back from the brink of extinction. Thankfully some people in this world look beyond the attractiveness of the animal when deciding whether it deserves to to survive as a species. It is important for us all to reflect on why we want to save a species and the fact that it is attractive, "cute" if you like, is the most trivial of reasons. read more here... ...
The Australian View Of America
2007-12-10 00:37:42
Australia has been accused of being the 51st state of America. It seems that we are destined to follow America in most things, Australia's strict gun laws being a notable exception, but what do Australians really think of America and Americans? Conveniently for those of you pondering this question the University of Sydney has some answers. The bitter pill first perhaps... here are some of the things we most dislike - 85% of Australias think that gun control is the US is a joke and needs reform - approx 2/3s think the US is crap at "social equality", "economic equality" and "race relations" - more than half veiw the role of "religion in American society" as a negative. Now, now, put away that indignation. There are also things we like about America, such as - Science and technology - art and literature - personal freedom - economic opportunity - political freedom - standard of living We also like the influence of America on our television, sport, ...

Sexual Promiscuity In USA
2007-12-04 23:55:15
Hanky panky is alive and growing in the US but some groups are more enthusiastic about it than others and it turns out that the TV sitcoms appear to be right, it is the 20 somethings that are going at it hammer and tong. The 30 somethings have had more sexual partners all up but then again they have had an extra 10 years. In 2002 a fifth of all 20 something females had multiple sexual partners that year. That is nothing however compared to their male counterparts where a third were bouncing from bed to bed. And what about the ageing hippies, the generation of free love, well it appears it might have been free but it was definitely not readily available. Your ageing hippie fella, in forty years of sexual activity, is only marginally in front of what a modern 20 something has achieved in his first 10 years. 20 something females have had nearly double the number of sexual partners than their female hippie counterparts managed to rack up in 40 years of sexual activity. So what is the chara ...

Post Election Report On Dumbness
2007-12-02 08:13:46
The Green Man once again presents his post election analysis of dumbness in the Australian electorate. As all Australians would know, but possibly others may not, voting is compulsory in Australia. Whilst this is a concept that many may find strange The Green Man thinks it is a good idea. One consequence however is that even the dumbest in the electorate are required to turn up at a polling station and mark their ballot paper. Fortunately this group manage to eliminate any affect they may have on the outcome by their incapacity to number six boxes in order of their preferance without stuffing it up. Here are the top ten for the 2007 Federal Election Electorate People unable to to number 6 boxes correctly Swing AllVotes Watson 7321 0.16 78575 Blaxland 7289 -0.78 76811 Chifley 6460 -2.86 80455 Prospect 5937 -1.64 76412 Fowler 5849 -1.16 75876 Bennelong 5582 0.22 90013 Reid 5376 -4.11 74352 Parramatta 4966 -3.07 80343 Werriwa 4873 -1.44 74528 Banks 4664 -1.79 75939 hmmm now let me see whe ...

Sheep v Poodle
2007-04-27 09:07:09
Thousands of Japanese have spend $1,600 each on a poodle only to discover the animal they have received is, in fact, a sheep. Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food. Not that strange if YOU ARE A SHEEP. Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like. For those Japanese amongst the readership, the sheep is the one on the right. The Green Man had a sheep for a pet for a while, her name was Ewe-nis. She was a good pet but the person we got her from didn't tell us she was a house-sheep. The Green Man had ideas that she would live in the paddock and eat grass, sadly Ewe-nis had other ideas about where sheep lived and what they eat (which was in the house eating "wild bird mix" seedmix). She eventually went to live on a hobby farm but at no point did The Green ...

Global Warming Explained
2007-04-27 08:25:26
Scientists at College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University have discovered one significant cause of global warming is volcanos. Who'd of thought that spewing 10 million cubic kilometers of magma into the atmosphere would warm things up. Well it did off western British Isles about 55 million years ago raising sea surface temperatures by five degrees Celsius in the tropics and more than six degrees in the Arctic. The period of intense warming that lasted roughly 220,000 years, well more than human civilisation has been around. Perhaps humans can outlast this current bout of global warming that, pop science at least, thinks we caused ourselves, but it going to be a long wait. Read more here. Sound of Music
2007-04-07 01:02:08
Each year at the festival a contest is held amongst the performers to see who can produce the most innovative and entertaining version of a song. This years theme is the Sound Of Music and last night was round one. Anyone who holds the Sound of Music dear to their hearts would do well to avoid these events where the songs of the movie are mutilated in the most hilarious ways. I will avoid the detail of the bondage version Eidleweise, however here are the new words to Doh-A-Deer. Doh, a large amount of cash Ray, a flatish kind of fish Me, half of a cats word Far, three quarters of a smell So, two thirds of a call for help La, the french word for "the" Tee, a little stick in golf Doh, ..... Male Voices
2007-04-07 00:53:36
Over the last couple of years at the National Folk Festival there has been a rediscovery of the magic of the massed male voice. In the past we had the Spooky Men, a male a capella group from the Blue Mountains, this year there are two groups present, Voice Male and Bloke-apella. All three groups have two important things in common, they have discovered the power and vibrance of unaccompanied male voices on mass and all have a healthy disrespect for the gift that they have. There is nothing feminine about these performances, they are all male. It is both invigorating and immensely entertaining to hear a group of men, in good humour, singing their hearts out, their voices untainted by instrument or female voice. The bit I just don't get however is how the baritone, who you expect to be size of a small tractor, is always this skinny little guy. Small of stature, big of voice; that's yin and yang for you I suppose.... ...

Dont Mention The War (err Polar Bears)
2007-03-12 02:18:08
Scientific American reports that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has issued an edict that scientist are prohibited from making any public comment about the plight that Polar Bears find themselves in. It seems that if you want to get public funding from the Bush Administration to attend a conference you must agree that polar bears, the melting polar ice cap and global warming will not be discussed. H. Dale Hall, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, defended the policy laid out in the memos, saying it was meant to keep scientists from straying from a set agenda at meetings in countries like Russia, Norway and Canada and you can understand why. Obviously none of those three countries will notice the collapse of the polar ice shelf if noone mentions it. To take one example, on a discussion on "human and polar bear interface." it was forbidden to discuss the receding Arctic sea ice where polar bears live because it had no relevance to the topic. According to Hall, it w ...

Asthma By State
2007-03-07 01:13:59
Here is a map of childhood asthma prevalence by state published by CDC with the north-east of USA taking the cake. The CDC is rather coy in the article as to why this may be but The Green Man has some interesting factoids that may shed some light. The Australian Government Health site speculates 1. in wealthy, hygienic Western countries, most babies are not exposed to bacterial infections that "kick start" the immmune system in early life and may be important in directing the immune system away from allergic responses. They also grow up in warm, well-furnished, carpeted homes that don't allow much airflow. This encourages the rapid breeding of large numbers of house dust mites in bedding, carpets and furnishings. Many children, instead of playing outside in fresh air, spend most of their time indoors. This further increases dust mite sensitisation. 2. diet in Western countries, such as a high proportion of processed foods, a higher salt intake, a lower antioxidant intake and a lac ...

TXU says What Global Warming?
2007-02-19 07:50:07
Do you buy your energy from TXU, The Green Man does, and he is most disconcerted to discover that, in the midst of all the concern on global warming they are about to commence construction of 11 new coal-fired powerplants in the US, to the tune of 11 billion dollars. Their 11 plants will produce 78 million tons of CO2 emissions each year for the expected 50-year lifespan of the plants. This is more than entire countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, and Portugal. It is also the equivalent of putting 10 million 4WDs on the road or cutting and burning all the trees in a section of the Amazon larger than the state of California This is being funded by Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup a global axis of environmental irresponsibility.
