Lavender Dreams
2007-04-23 12:18:00
I read somewhere that scent is the strongest trigger for memory recollection. And somehow I think this is true. A childhood playmate of mine that I no longer have any contact with; I have no idea where she lives, what she is doing, or even what her surname was. Although my strongest memory of my time with her consists of her grandmother. Her grandmother smelt of lavender, and everytime I get a whiff of lavender, it takes me back to the days when I would play in her backyard and her grandmother would lovingly watch on through her bedroom window. She never said much and if it weren’t for that distict fragrance of lavender, those memories never would have stuck. Along with potpourri and rose scented powder, everytime I smell lavender I always think of grandmothers. Not only does lavender conjure up recollections of grannies, but there is something romantically provincial yet wildly exotic about it. It invokes imaginings of open meadows lined with rows and rows of purple flowers growing w ...

The Delight of Discovery
2007-04-20 03:02:00
There was a time when all mousse was to me was the stuff that you put in your hair to help keep it up. Okay, you can now take that look of disgust off your faces, forgive me, it was the early nineties and birds nests and teased fringes were still all the rage. So were bike pants and bubble skirts, but let's leave that for another post. Fast forward ten years from then and I did eventually discover that mousse is so much more than a hair product. And it appears that the mousse that you put in your mouth far outweighs the pleasures of the mousse that you put in your hair.So of course with my limited and somewhat awry experience with mousse, I had never made it nor had any inkling as to how it was actually made. I had eaten mousse at several restaurants before, although I never got the inclination to make them for myself, until now that is. I imagined that it was very involved, with lots of of beating and whisking; I was wrong about the whisking and beating part, although I did find out ...

Pumpkin and Sunflower Seed Scones
2006-08-30 11:20:00
I heart scones. I never thought I would have to use this already vastly exploited phrase, but there really wasn't any other way of capturing my current scone attraction. I don't absolutely love scones, I won’t go gaga over them; I simply just heart them. It's probably a lot like telling someone gently you don't love them, but you do like them, a lot. And I hope that these scones don't take it the wrong way, I really do heart them. They make getting up in the morning much more bearable. And if it weren't for them, I would be an even bigger grump in the morning than I am now. This newfound attraction to scones has come out of nowhere. I don’t know what exactly it is about them; and I wouldn’t say it has reached obsession stage, all I know is that I have had a penchant for baking them lately. I mean I shouldn’t look into it more than I ought to; sometimes I just have a need to bake. Maybe it’s their rustic nature and the fact it always reminds me of the countryside- rollin ...

Morning Glory
2006-07-21 20:53:00
This morning at 7:30am, I left work, stepped outside and was met by what I can only describe as a torrential downpour. The street was flooded with water and the mesh awning above the front entrance was caving in under the weight of all the water it had collected. As I made a swift bee line for the car, I noticed how incredibly beautiful it actually was. I raced back up the front step to get a better view. The striking thing about this portrait was that despite all the rain, the sun was still shining incredibly brightly. The scene was nothing short of surreal. It was the most glorious display of nature I could only imagine and was the perfect reception back into the land-of-the-living after another round of night shifts. The sky was lit with brilliant hues of yellow and orange and the deafening sound of pattering rain was strangely exhilarating. Like witnessing a violent thunderstorm I was awed by this exquisite act of nature. There were no words to describe it other than breathtaking.Ev ...
Waiting For My Brilliant Career
2006-06-03 16:09:00
If there are two things that cause me to salivate most, they are cookies and gelato. The utter elation I feel upon entering or let alone catching sight of a gelateria is unmatched. Extreme is one’s passion, that at one point I even considered becoming a gelato taste-tester, I’m serious. There’s no question about it, the girl loves her cookies and gelato.Such was my fanciful childhood ambition that even to this day, I will go around telling people that if my career in communications were to go bust, my plan-B was to be a gelato taste-tester. Oh to be that valiant soul who would taste every new flavour of gelato before it is let loose on an unsuspecting public. This was to be my noble cause, until I hit a slight snag when I couldn’t find job listings for “Gelato Taste-Tester” on seek.com.So if anyone is indeed searching for that fearless individual to try all manner of gelato flavours, I am here waiting for the call. In the meantime I make do with my Giant Espresso Cookie Gel ...
