Fat Man Unleashed - Interview Part 3
2008-05-07 22:42:00
As I said in Part 1 of this interview with healthy weight loss blogger Israel Lagares, in his best shape, a few years ago, standing 6 feet tall and weighing a muscular 235 pounds, Israel enjoyed living the fit life, working out and turning food into muscle. A few years later, having fallen off the fitness wagon and tending to not so healthy foods, he put on some weight and ballooned up to 348 pounds. It happens to the best of us, something happens, life gets in the way, and for whatever reason, the guru of health or fitness gains some weight back.Part 1 of this interview discussed his fitness routine, while part 2 was about his diet. We conclude this week with part 3, the Mental Game of getting back in shape. The Mental Game of Getting Back Into ShapeHow important is the mental aspect to your training and nutritional program? Crucial. Your head has to be in the game. You need to be mentally prepared to undertake the ups and downs that a diet or training program can have on you. There a ...
Whole Foods Market Shopping Tips
2008-05-02 02:38:00
How to Shop at Whole Foods MarketThe merger of Whole Foods Market with Wild Oats highlights the benefits and drawbacks of this organic retail giant. Although Whole Foods Market certainly provides a "feel good" shopping experience for millions of consumers, it's important to keep in mind that WFM isn't nearly as green as it pretends to be. But of course, for many consumers, Whole Foods Market offers the only access for green and organic products. If Whole Foods Market is the only option available in your area, here are some important tips for the organic-minded shopper:Tips For Shopping At Whole Foods MarketLook for locally grown produce: Whole Foods offers only a limited supply of local produce, although it is well labeled. Reduce the burden of long-distance food transportant on the planet by asking your WFM produce manager to stock more local produce. Not everything is as "natural" or "organic" as you might think: Although Whole Foods doesn't carry products with trans fats or artifici ...
Fat Man Unleashed - Interview Part 2
2008-04-30 21:29:00
Last week I began my three part interview series with Israel Lagares who runs his healthy weight loss blog Fat Man Unleashed. Part one of the series was about his fitness routine, and this week we continue with his nutritional program.Describe the diet you're following to achieve your goal.I am on a balanced protein, carb, low fat intake diet. I eat a lot of fruit, veggies and chicken. I don't eat a lot of refined or processed foods. I don't drink anything but water and green tea. Simple.Yep, sounds pretty simple. Seems we both believe eathing natural foods is the way to go. What is the main focus of the diet? (ie: cutting calories? cutting fat? eating natural?) Initially it was cutting calories, but now I have focused on eating more fruits and veggies to "fill" me up.So Volumization then? High fiber foods? How many meals a day are you eating? I strive for 5 to 6 but am more at about 4 to 4.75 meals a day. I'm finding the same thing. As I eat higher nutrient density foods and hig ...
Free Recipes Blog - a Review
2008-04-29 06:59:00
As I write my course on better eating, I’m realizing that many of the participants are enjoying the recipes that are provided. Great whole food recipes that my girlfriend and I create and eat ourselves here at home.Everyone loves recipes, and the more the better I always say.I’ve posted a few of them here on my website and I’ve send out a monthly favorite to my subscribers each month along with my natural health newsletter. The recipes I’m interested in, and the ones we promote are low fat / good fat, dairy free, whole food vegetarian recipes. I figure that any high school or college student can cook meat, but it’s the rest of the important qualities of food, namely whole foods, that we could all learn more about. The free recipes website My Recipes Blog is most certainly not in that category. Great Recipe Photos? Nope! The pictures of the recipes are small and hard to see.Dairy Free? Certainly not. The front page alone has a Bechamel Sauce that includes 300ml milk, 300 ...

The Words You Choose
2008-04-26 23:49:00
Imagine the challenge of climbing to the top of Mt Everest. Imagine standing at the bottom looking up, knowing that the peak is your final destination. Imagine how long it’s going to take and how much effort to finally reach your goal and the summit. What words do you use to describe the journey ahead of you?Do you turn around and head home, or do you focus on the single step in front of you to get you moving? On occasion, I’ll either run a contest to give away my products or the products of good friends that I choose.During the current Big Give Health and Fitness Challenge that The Fit Bastard and I put on, readers were asked to post their story and why they should win the contest to receive the free products. One person has already told her story about feeling so motivated about taking action on her health. She submitted this as part of her story:When I got the email about this opportunity, I immediately clicked on…ready to enter and tell you my sad story of yo yo diets, the de ...
Big Give Health and Fitness Challenge
2008-04-24 22:30:00

My good friend Scott Tousignant, aka "The Fit Bastard" is in a really great mood (the secret is that he's always in a great mood) and he wants to give away his products to one lucky winner.Recently Scott and his wife Angie went through a transformation of their own and both achieved 6 Pack Abs. They used the methods that he teaches in his Fit Chic and Fit bastard workouts along with a good sensible eating program. As a result their lives have changed dramatically...This is Scott before he started his transformationBeforeAnd this is he and his wife after their fitness program was complete.AfterAs he says, their lives changed dramatically….They're relationship has risen to a new level, they can keep up with their 2 young children, their business has grown, their confidence has skyrocketed, and they have an overwhelming zest for life. The best part...They are willing to do whatever it takes so you can experience these ...

Weight Loss Interviews - Steve
2008-04-16 22:19:00
Steve was 160 pounds when he graduated from high school and entered the Navy but years later, at 38 and being married for almost 13 years, he broke the 200 pound mark topping out at 212. Steve says he started burn the fat, feed the muscle on my recommendation and dropped 25 pounds. A knee injury a few months later stopped him in his tracks and the weight began to creep back on.He started blogging about his journey on the website No More Fat Dad, and says his turning point was in 2005 when he overheard one of his young sons friends say "Your dad’s fat!"After dropping 21 pounds in the past 11 weeks, he's on a mission to pass the Navy SEAL fitness challenge.Steve, aka No More Fat Dad, is a 38 year old sales engineer for a small company that sells Google Enterprise solutions to the U.S. Federal Government and hails from Cleveland, Ohio. Fuhrman's Eat For Health
2008-04-11 06:08:00
Dr Joel fuhrman has a new 2 set book out entitled "Eat For Health" available at Amazon for $46. It's a two book set, part one being about the mind makeover and part two being the body makeover. His first book Eat To Live is a fantastic read that I recommend to anyone. I'm looking forward to the new two book set and have it in my shopping cart right now.Tonja R. Nansel, PhD has this to say about Eat For Health:Dr. Fuhrman's nutritional prescription is a greatly-needed antidote to the US way of eating which has become a leading cause of disease and premature death. Despite all the sophisticated medical technology available today, the sobering truth is that the greatest tools for preventing and reversing disease are your fork and spoon. This way of eating will greatly benefit those in poor health as well as healthy persons desiring optimal wellness and vitality. Further, unlike most weight-loss approaches based on will-power and difficult to sustain, Dr. Fuhrman's approach corrects the ...
New Photos of My Cats
2008-04-11 03:36:00
Darlene was able to get some shots of my cats today. They're 14 and 15 (I think) and I want to get some photos done sooner rather than later. The orange cat is Pumpkin and the black one is Boo. They're my Halloween cats.  I like dogs too, but they're much more responsibility. Cats take care of themselves while Dogs require "supervision". Looking for a dog? here's a Dog for Sale ...
Moving Servers Again
2008-04-10 02:55:00
Moving Servers AgainSo I moved servers again. I've been getting ready to re-launch my new blog since Jan 1 (I know, I know), and this is now the 3rd server I've been on.I still cannot get wordpress to work correctly because of the hosting environment.I've been on the web since 1995 on a Microsoft server because of my .asp format, but now want to blend the .asp (Microsoft) with .php (Linux). The last server I was on was not processing my .htaccess file resulting in broken permalinks.... oh, by the way, this has NOTHING to do with health, fitness or fat loss, it's a purely technical post to test the changes in FTP for publishing with blogger. So today I upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 which goes quite smoothly, but when testing the permalinks, they're still broken. A call to technical support tells me that the .htaccess file is not being processed because it's a microsoft box. ???? WTF?I just moved to this server because it was supposed to be a linux installation which would process both my ...

What's in Marla's Gym
2008-04-05 23:26:00
I've been reading Marla's blog Someday is Now. Marla is a 46 year old woman who works from home, and interestingly enough helps with edition on Project Gutenberg. At her highest weight, she was 260. She's lost 60 pounds from 2003 to 2005 but has been plateaued ever since. In her words, she's quite interested in building up her strength during this plateau and not taking it too personally. So, I was reading about her latest pushup success story, which initially got my attention, then I stumbled over to her "what's in my gym" page.I laughed my ass off when I read her point #6 A jumprope that I'm not going to use until they invent a much more serious type of sports bra.too funny.Check out Someday is Now, a great read for any woman taking on the fitness lifestyle. ...
Vitamix Blender Question and Answer
2008-04-04 22:20:00
I've gone 18 years now since I first began my natural health journey, and for the full 18 years I've not yet purchased a Vitamix blender or other similar whole food processing blender. I'm now in the market for one and have been researching the various models, the pro's and cons etc. During my research, I was happy to receive Organic Annie's monthly newsletter in which she answered a question about this very subject. When I do buy one, I'd either get the Vita-Mix 1300 TurboBlend 4500 or BlendTec HP3AQ. I have some questions for you... I'm looking into buying a blender such as VitaMix or KTec and wondered if you have any thoughts on how these perform. Also, I've read that with some juicers/blenders the nutrition oxidizes faster and so you need to drink it soon after making. Will you share what you know about this, too? Thanks! SherriA. Hello Sherri, Vita Mix is recommended because the blade rotates in both directions therefore, supposedly, protecting the magnetic polarity of the ...

What We Focus On We ReceiveSeek and Ye Shall Find, so the bible says. And similarly, many spiritual teachings say that whatever we focus on, we we move towards. In business they teach you that whatever you believe, you can achieve. And from what I've heard, seen, and learned in philosophy and in life, you become like what you love. I think this is a wonderful order that exists in the universe! Seek joy and you will find it! Seek love and you will find it! Seek health and you will find it! Exercising Before or After You Eat
2008-03-28 21:43:00
This is a response to an email I got from a friend through facebook. Christina recently went to the gym for the very first time earlier this week with my girlfriend Darlene. On Monday, they did a little fitness assessment and then did a short workout so that Christina could find dumbbell weights that were comfortable for her. She intends to purchase the dumbbells and continue her workouts at home.Today she asked me about the timing of food and her workouts. She asks if she should eat before or after her workouts.Great question. It depends on what you want to accomplish. Exercise on an empty stomach is said to burn more fat because you’re using fat rather than any glucose running through your veins. Exercise in the morning, after fasting all night should burn more fat, or so they say.Exercising directly after eating diverts blood from the stomach, required for digestion, to the muscles. Doing so results in an incomplete digestion process, so that’s not good either.Exercising i ...
Weight Loss Blog Interviews - Andrew Scott
2008-03-24 19:43:00
I had to opportunity to interview Andrew Scott, a Scotsman living in Indonesia about his weight loss program. I met Andrew when he answered the call to be a beta tester for the 12 week course in whole food eating I'm developing. In a post I did the other day about other weight loss blogs, I quoted from Andrew's website Discipline or Regret where he says:It’s time to think for myself, it’s time to educate myself about my body and the foods that I eat and how exercise affects it. And that’s what I did, for months I read and asked people and read some more. Then the time comes when all that knowledge has to be turned into actions to be come wisdom. I had to initiate all the information I had, and I am ... I am embracing the pain of discipline because I don’t want to suffer the pain of regret!Hi Andrew, thanks for doing the interview. Lets start with your age.I'm 29 Rob.Where are you currently living?I live in Surabaya, Indonesia, but I'm originally from Scotland And what do you ...

A few weight loss blog's that I've come across lately or interacted with. Fat Man UnleashedIsrael was always a gym rat, and in his best shape weighed in around the 220 pound to 235 pound mark. For one reason or another, Israel lost touch with the gym and didn't train for a good number of years and reached his maximum weight of 348 pounds, 120 pounds heavier than he wants to be.Israel is also interested in promoting health related stories, through his latest venture Health Ranker where members can vote on stories they like giving them more exposure. check it out.As of this writing, Israel is down 44 pounds on his quest to regain his lean mean physique. No More Fat DadSteve, a former Navy man, woke up one day to realize that his weight was affecting his family life. How To Build Muscle Fast
2008-03-21 07:14:00
I've been reading more about green smoothies, the debate about VitaMix vs BlendTec blenders as well as strength training. It's been a vegetarian nutrition sort of day for me.Jason Ferruggia, suspected vegetarian body builder / strength trainer (I'll do more research on it) had this to say in an article about how to build muscle fastProductive mass building workouts are centered on one concept and one concept only; progressive overload. You have to consistently get stronger and lift more weight and do more reps if you ever want to get bigger. Doing the same thing repeatedly will get you absolutely nowhere and is a complete waste of your time. Also, you need to be sure that you are using big, compound exercises like squats, deadlifts and chin ups with heavy weights. Don’t waste your time with isolation exercises and pumping techniques that do nothing to help you build muscle fast. Next, you need to be sure your diet is in order. This means that you are eating copious amounts of food ev ...
Notes From The Universe - The Words You Choose
2008-03-21 01:54:00
Help me with the lingo here, Rob. Are people just kidding when they refer to the "holy land," "holy words," and "holy people," as if they were somewhere else?Or do they understand that there's no land holier than that beneath them? That no words are mightier than those they choose? And that no one, ever, has been more divine and revered and deserving of their heart's desires, than they now are? I do declare, The UniverseNotes from The Universe, get them yourself ...

France Takes a Stand Against GM foods - They BAN it
2008-03-20 07:26:00
PARIS, March 19 (Reuters) - France's top legal authority on Wednesday upheld a government decision to ban commercial use of the only genetically modified (GM) crop grown in the country by rejecting an emergency injunction filed by the pro-GM camp.France issued decrees banning the use of MON 810 maize seeds in February after a government-appointed committee said it unearthed new evidence of damage GM products could inflict on the environment.Ecologists and ordinary consumers hailed the ruling, but seedmakers, including MON 810 creator Monsanto, and maize farmers lodged an emergency injunction in an attempt to overturn the ban.read the rest of the story[Rob's Note: why would a fat loss expert be bringing genetically modified food stories to your attention rather than info about exercise or weight loss? because it's all about food really. Messing with what mother nature provided for us is just asking for trouble.] ...
Seattle Bans Bottled Water
2008-03-20 07:08:00
First San Francisco banned it. Then Chicago started taxing it. Now, the city of Seattle is taking action against bottled water; last week, Mayor Greg Nickels signed an executive order to stop the city from buying bottled water. That means no more bottled water at city facilities and events, which may sound like a small step, but it'll make a big difference; last year, the city spent $58,000 on the stuff (and that's not including the true cost and carbon footprint of bottled water). We're willing to bet that the city's taxpayers can probably think of about 58,000 ways to better spend that money.more from Treehugger ...

Worlds Strongest Girl - Varvara Akulova
2008-03-19 07:41:00
Strong Ukraine girl, Varya Akulova, 13 years old now, but most of the pictures on this site show her at age 6. She trains using Kettlebells (of course), and other than that I don't know much about her. Just happened to Stumble upon her tonight.Strong women fascinate me.Women who train for strength, endurance, bodybuilding or weight loss, it doesn't matter, any woman who takes the incentive to work hard, and build strength fascinates me.Recently, I posted some video of strong women:Barbie Barbell doing Deadlifts - she's only 17 and holds world recordsBarbie Barbell doing bench press Strong women doing pullupsAn incredible display of Strong Women doing pushups - incredibly powerful pushup videoThere are a lot of times that I feel that there are a lot of women who are stronger than me, and that inspires me. It inspires me to train harder myself, to become better and to inspire others, men and women to become better.Varya does some pretty spectacular feats of strength. Here's one she ...
Original 300 Workout by Mark Twight
2008-03-19 02:19:00
The original 300 workout, designed for the actors of the movie 300, is definitely a challenge. Here’s how it goes:a) Pullups - 25 repsb) Deadlifts with 135lbs - 50 repsc) Pushups - 50 repsd) 24-inch Box jumps - 50 repse) Floor wipers - 50 repsf) 1-arm Clean & Press with 36lbs Kettlebell - 50 repsg) Pullups - 25 repsAnd remember, there is NO scheduled rest between exercises. Although eventually, you’ll slow down.Craig Ballantyne has done this workout in 19 minutes and 7 seconds, but he cautions people, not to do this all the time. This is something you have to work towards and do as a “1 time” shot to test yourself every other month or so. Read Craig’s thoughts on the 300 workout. The 300 workout was done against the clock, the quicker you could get it done, the higher you ranked. Mark Twight, the creator, used it as a way for the 300 movie actors to compete against one another in their fitness levels. If you’re going to do this, train for it, then do it on the clock. Then tr ...

A Good Rice Cooker
2008-03-17 08:55:00
I like rice. When I first started my weight loss journey back in 1990, I ate rice as the primary part of my diet. Now, I control my starch intake and eat the best quality rice, on occasion. I prefer brown rice, but I also like to have my rice available easily and effectivley.I use brown rice on my re-feed days as my primary source of starchy carbohydrates. We recently had a Japanese student begin living with us, and today he asked me for my opinion on a good rice cooker. We have one, but it's a set and forget version. You turn it on, and 40 minutes later you've got rice.Yasushi, the student living with us, wanted one that he could set or time, and come back to later to have warm rice. I didn't know this existed. He sent me this rice cooker so that he could have my opinion on it and where he could get one in Edmonton. The price of $120 US caught me a bit off guard, but if it does what is says it's supposed to do, and if Yasushi thinks it's a good buy, then it must be.anyone have a ...
