Slow Going
2008-04-05 00:08:47
I'm sorry, I haven't updated this blog very frequently lately. There's a lot going on right now. I'm in the process of moving my blogs to a new server (and trying to figure out domain names), which is a huge project. Having my own domain names and my own websites is still relatively new. I'm slowly learning the complexities of it all!I've haven't been tinkering with too many new software programs, either. Since joining Entrecards for my other websites, I've been very busy building up the network there. It has helped my traffic a lot, and I don't want to lose the momentum. I'm also setting up for a dental appointment (my first cavity in 11 years!). It's not something I'm really looking forward to-- who does, lol? But it's a front tooth so I'm a little edgy about it, plus I have no medical insurance for dental care and am expecting to pay for it myself. The good news is that the dentist may give me a discount for cash payment!I also have several blog reviews in the queue. Stay tuned for ...

Notepad Pro+
2008-04-05 00:03:58
I've been using Notepad Pro+ for a few weeks now. I have been hesitant to give it my thumbs up here, because I was unsure about the program, whether it would self-destruct after a day like some other open source Notepad replacements do. But I think I really, really like Notepad Pro+! It's a free download here. Notepad Pro+ is far superior to that boring old Windows notepad. Notepad Pro+ has the typical word wrap and font style options, but it also has a tabbed interface! It also has a word count! And it counts "lines" for html coding! I think I love it!If you are dissatisfied with Windows Notepad, and are looking for something better but not too overblown or buggy, maybe you want to check out Notepad Pro+. It's working well for me. It gets 5 stars from Cnet, too.

Are you a writer of press releases or articles, or a blogger looking to improve your presence in the SEO world? Keyword density is absolutely critical. I do a lot of searching press releases, articles, and news items as a researcher and a blogger. It is so hard to find things sometimes because of poor keyword density. How on earth can I find something if the keywords aren't there? It is a frustrating experience sometimes. Well, I found a free tool, the Press Release SEO Tool that will scan your text and provide percentages for your keywords. It's a terrific tool, simple to use, and it's FREE! So if you need to improve your keyword density, this tool will help you show you what you're doing and give you the information to improve it.

Google Deleting Blogger Blogs?
2008-04-03 00:34:19
I'd found some disturbing information while doing some blog and news research this morning. Reports that Google is deleting Blogger blogs (and possibly de-indexing others) are alarming. I don't see how this can bode well for Blogger at all. Perhaps Google's takeover of the popular blogging platform was with this very thing in mind-- to have more control over the blogosphere. There's this story: So let’s assume I make a blog on blogger.com/blogspot.com - let’s say I tailor it towards one particular narrow field. It could be about a product, it could be about one subject like cars, or it could be a personal blog. It doesn’t really matter because recently, from personal experience, and from scanning the blogosphere, it appears that Google/Blogger/Blogspot is now deleting people’s blogs for absolutely no reason. The reason -I- was told, that 5 of my blogspot blogs were deleted was because of link spam. I wasn’t spamming. I was actually focusing on narrow fields, talking about prod ...

Window Shopping
2008-03-31 01:01:20
Looking for window coverings? I found an outstanding company that sells discount window blinds and more. I'm very impressed with the quality of the website. I don't know about you, but when I did my first several online shopping transactions (ten years ago now!) I was quaking more than a bowl of jelly! It seemed so unreal, typing in my credit card information to buy something I couldn't tangibly touch or see. After ten years of online purchases, I have never been disappointed. I am more and more impressed with the convenience and safety of buying things online. Of course, I am always looking for reputable, quality companies and I go back to them.ShadesShuttersBlinds.com has an excellent website. They even have a telephone number and a blog! Talk about customer service! Plus, they have a terrific selection of cheap mini blinds and a gorgeous shade design selection. The Roman shades are exquisite. Roman shades are my favorite. I cannot sew them very well, so I've been on the lookout for ...

Online Gear
2008-03-31 00:59:15
I have seen the Internet offer a lot of interesting stuff for sale, but this amazes me- police tactical gear! There's everything from police mugs to baseball hats to tactical boots! See for yourself! The prices are pretty good, actually! They also offer the Surefire flashlight, which is one of the best, I hear.My sons would absolutely flip over this store. It was founded by police in Los Angeles, and has expanded to offer products to military personnel, professionals, and the public. The flashlights are a great deal.... no guns though! lol.

It's Nice Being an Award-Giver
2008-03-31 00:35:37
I gave Fida Abbott an internet award, but she rewarded me even more by telling me it was her first award given by a non-Indonesian! Woo! I am going down in Fida Abbott history! Check out her blog here. It's a lovely blog, and I love her stories. And Hercules Mulligan is proudly showing off his award at Alexander Hamilton Patriot. Nice job, Herky! As for the others... I haven't even told them about their awards yet, oops. :)

2008-03-29 13:50:32
I know I haven't been blogging much here. I'm building a website (open house will be announced in the future). It's taking up a lot of time and involves more writing than usual blogs do. I also have a LOT of writing assignments these days. So I apologize for the sparse postings! Go check out a few of my other blogs if you have a hankering to read. :)

A Great Firefox Add-on
2008-03-29 13:47:29
I'm a BIG fan of the Firefox browser. It's been having a few problems lately (usually happens after an update) and I think that my plugins may be going screwy on me. For some reason, Firefox won't connect to the Internet when I use wireless. It's driving me crazy! So I've been tinkering with the plugins. I hadn't looked at their bank of plugins for a long time, and was surprised to see their "new look." I was also surprised to be hundreds upon hundreds of plugins for everything to launching radio players to tips for acne treatment! Sheesh! It's a bit much. I did find a golden egg in the nest, though. I love this addon! It's called Fancy Numbered Tabs and it simply does what it says-- it gives your tabs little numbers so you can keep track of them. I always have a lot of tabs open and sometimes I get confused. It's a nice addon.

Web Analytics and You
2008-03-27 16:23:57
I'm small-time blogger. I make a few bucks here and there, blogging reviews or adding some text links here and there. I've heard all the stories about bloggers like John Chow, who boasted recently of his $30,000 income for one month. One month! Incredible. I'd like to earn that. Who wouldn't? Running websites and blogs is becoming very high-tech. I've been trying to pay attention to my stats and search engine results, but I admit I am a real cheapskate-- I use a little free web tracker. It only gives me information and stats for the first 500 visitors. I don't think I'll ever go "big time" for this blog, but stranger things have happened, so who knows! However, my home improvement blog and my travel blog are very popular. I am hoping that someday these blogs prove to be very successful. Lord knows, I spend enough time at them all day long! So, I'm paying more attention to stats and information. Big-time webmasters use something called hosted web analytics. Now THAT's what I'm talking ' ...

Titles Wordpress Plugin
2008-03-27 16:06:44
I caught wind of a wonderful Wordpress plugin that allows you to shows "unconventional" fonts on your website. Fonts on websites are a curious thing. Your blog posts might look wonderful with the "Brady Bunch" or "Comic Superhero" fonts. Your computer displays them beautifully. But any other person viewing viewing your page still sees the same old Arial, Georgia, Trebuchet, or Times New Roman fonts. Why is that? It's because that other computer user doesn't have the "Brady Bunch" or "Comic Superhero" fonts installed on their computer. Those kinds of fonts are "specialty" fonts. They are not common to most computers. Most computers' default fonts are the Arial, Georgia, Trebuchet, or Times New Roman. I've lamented many times how boring the typical default fonts are on computers. I like artsy stuff, and I like a variety of fonts. Well, guess what, I caught wind of a wonderful Wordpress plugin that allows you to shows "unconventional" fonts on your website. TTFTitles Plugin for Wordpress ...

Online Scanning Service
2008-03-26 00:03:50
Here's an amazing thing: document scanning services! Sourcecorp, a New England company, provides a unique service with their document managing service, called ImageSilo. It's a service geared toward making all the paperwork for businesses a little easier. Documents are scanned at the company, and uploaded to their "web based document repository" (conveniently named the "Image Silo"). It's much like outsourcing your paperwork, except that this is an American company. :)The documents are heavily encrypted, and the company promises 99.9% uptime so the data is always available. There's a 30-day free trial. If you are a business owner looking for a way to consolidate paperwork and increase productivity, you might want to check into this. Online storage is available, too. I've noticed that more document-type programs are going online. Spreadsheets, Word documents, and the like are becoming more popular as more applications go online. And everyone has heard of data backups. I don't think down ...

Best Free Fonts
2008-03-25 18:45:08
We all can use some new fonts to spruce up our documents and templates, right? :D I do a lot of graphic design and template tinkering, so I have quite a collection of fonts. I have never paid one cent for a font collection. And you don't need to, either. Here's a little list of the best free fonts I have found.Simply the Best Free FontsSearch Free Fonts.com1001 Free FontsMost fonts sites have the same fonts over and over again, I've found. Those three have the best collection, IMHO, and the easiest searching and downloading capabilities. There are lots of "small time" font makers out there who have created some nice specialty fonts. a Yahoo search will pull them up.Be careful what you download, however. Browse wisely. I use McAfee's Site Advisor, Netcraft, and update my anti-virus software before I go searching for fonts. Sometimes creeps will include malware or trojans under the guise of "free" fonts. So stick with the well-known font sites. Also, Kim Komando's message boards are fill ...

Freebie Website
2008-03-21 15:56:50
I found a wonderful website (via Entrecards, again!) that is a great resource for finding free software programs. It's called Softfreebie. I really like it. It has a growing list of excellent software found for free on the Internet. It's a good one to keep an eye on for future resources. It's got everything, looks like, from games, database tools, firewalls, educational tools, backup tools, proxy tools, Adobe programs! I didn't see anything about online term life insurance quotes, but hey, who knows, maybe that's next, lol! They've got everything else! The categories are varied and numerous, and I really like the style. I haven't tried out the search feature, yet.Keep an eye on this one of you are looking for freeware on the Internet. I know I will, because i always am. ;)

Free Color Match Mixer
2008-03-21 15:48:25
I found a wonderful little tool for those of us who are "hue-challenged." Lol. It's the Color Match Remix, a free online tool to help you find colors for your blog. It matches hues and shades automatically, with handy little sliders. It makes me want to start up some new blogs, so that I can create some cool new color swatches! But I've already got enough blogs! I'm writing about everything including the kitchen sink! Actually, if I start up another one, it would have to be about kitchen faucets because I've already got the kitchen sink, lol! This color mixer is a fun tool for anyone, blogger or not. It has a design layout preview and the hue color numbers are easily exported. Free to use, too!

The Good and the Bad
2008-03-21 15:38:04
As much as I love the Internet and the availability of information, sometimes I am fed up with the thing. I've been surfing through Entrecards, dropping my cards (from my travel blog and my home improvement blog) on other's blogs. I have found some really, really great blogs out there! But unfortunately, I have also found some crude, bland, and outright disgusting blogs, too. Too bad. On one hand, I am glad to see that the anonymity-effect of the Internet has worn off (where people, thinking they are anonymous, post the stupidest or disgusting things that they wouldn't otherwise do), but on the other, there is still a plethora of people who have nothing better to do than gather around a beer pong table to burp beer and gawk at immodest women. :-p I think the Internet should be used for good and to promote the good news of the gospel, not make it into a Mardi Gras of licentious behavior.

Good Tutorial Website
2008-03-15 20:08:57
Once again, via Entrecard surfing (if you haven't checked out Entrecards, you really should!), I discovered another very helpful blog for computer users. This one is called WatchTheTutor.com. It covers the most basic of applications, like how to StumbleUpon a website and how to start a Gmail account, and dabbles in the more complicated stuff like converting a DVD to mp4 to an iPhone and creating an ISO image from a directory. It's a very new blog, so we will see how it develops. If you haven't tried Entrecards, I recommend you take a look at it. It's a free, fun way to increase traffic to your blog or website. You essentially join the community, make a little business card for your blog, and "drop" it on other blogs. Other bloggers come by your blog to "drop" their cards. You can advertise your blog on other's blogs, too, giving you "free" advertising. I put "free" in quotes because it doesn't cost money, but it does cost "credits." You get these credits by dropping your card. The enti ...

Good Vista Website
2008-03-15 19:47:07
I'm enjoying discovering new blogs with Entrecards. I don't use them for this blog, but I use them for my other blogs. Some blogs are real stinkers, but a wholesome amount of them are really great! An entire Entrecard subculture is springing up, looks like!By far, the most popular Entrecarders are mom blogs. I'm a mom, but I am far past the baby cribs and baby foods stage. I prefer to surf the geek blogs! There's a few very good ones I have discovered and bookmarked. From time to time, I hope to discuss them here. The first one is a blog called the "Windows Vista Guide." I remember when Windows XP first came out, a lot of people were confused over the new and altered settings, tweaks, and configurations. So a plethora of bloggers started "How To" blogs about XP. I have not seen many "How To" Vista blogs yet. Vista has been very slow to gain ground among computer users, so I suspect this is why websites about Vista haven't taken off as much.Nonetheless, XP won't last forever! Here's a g ...

The Entertainment Age
2008-03-14 19:05:30
My generation (Generation X in America) grew up in what is known in popular culture as the "Information Age." Technology was spawning inventions and geo-political implications, like the man on the moon, Reagan's "Star Wars" defense plan, televisions and VCRs, and the inception of the Internet. Can you believe that all these things occurred only a generation ago? I remember when VCRs came out-- the family was ecstatic! My stepfather was an electronics repairman, so we had the first of everything in my neighborhood. Today, those clunkers we call VCRs and tube televisions from the 70s are nothing compared to the sleek-looking HDTV models out there. Amazing.I've been thinking that the generational age we are living in could be called the "Entertainment Age." Never before in history have we used technology so much for our entertainment. It is truly a sign of the times. And sports is probably the most popular form of entertainment.I heard that CBS (who has held the broadcast rights to the ga ...

Did You Make It?
2008-03-10 04:09:12
How did the time change go for you all this morning? I have noticed that with all the electronic gadgets everywhere, keeping up with something so seemingly simple as a time change can be very, very hectic. Is it just me, or does it get worse every year?! I love this site I found, Retrevo. It is the do-all end-all place to go for everything Daylight Saving Time, and more. Here's the scoop from the site about DST: Last year (2007) was the first time in 20 years that new days were established for changing to Daylight Saving Time. Chances are you survived last year’s change to Daylight Saving Time on March 11th and then back to Standard Time in November. The problem is unless your device was upgraded to use the new dates your clocks will not change automatically on the right day this year, the second Sunday in March (March 9, 2008) and your clocks may then mistakenly try and adjust the clock on the old date which was the first Sunday in April (April 6, 2008).I hadn't considered the April ...

Find Out If You Are Owed Money
2008-03-09 03:56:49
There's a website up to help you see if you are owed money from old tax refunds or other unclaimed funds in New York State; it's the State Comptroller's Office. For federal unclaimed funds, go here to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. Wow, that's a mouthful of a title. Years ago, I found some money that was mine. It was a savings account that my grandmother had begun when I was a baby. I was excited when I heard the news! After all these decades of interest, how much money would I get? I submitted my information and a few weeks later, a check came in the mail! I tore it open to see the amount: $17.29. :|Not even enough to buy HDMI switches. *sigh*

As with "rap music" and "government intelligence," I've discovered another oxymoron for ya: ATM security. Not! Watch this 'expose' and fasten your seatbelts. I never use ATMs anymore, and watch cashiers like a hawk when they take my card. And I always cover the numberpad when I punch in my PIN.Watch this video. Buying Glasses Online
2008-03-08 14:49:45
I never thought in a million years that buying eyeglasses could be done via the Internet. Surprisingly, it turned out to be the best thing found: Zenni Optical. My husband got a pair a few months ago, and they are the best pair of glasses he's ever bought. After seeing the prices at the local eyeglasses stores ($125 and up), he gulped. He took the leap after making a great discovery: Zenni Optical! He got these kinds of frames (in the color gray).Guess how much these frames cost him?Eight bucks! Yep, the Zenni Optical $8 Rx Glasses special. There are more expensive models (some are $20). Hubs got bifocals, too. When I have to get a new pair, I'm trying them out. Can't go wrong with $8 frames!

Building Your Own Server
2008-03-08 00:49:00
I'd read months ago that Microsoft wanted to make it possible for every home to have their very own home-based server. (I'd also once read about every home having their very own electricity generator-- how cool is that?). Having a home server is actually very appealing, since I am a do-it-yourself kind of gal. It's not terribly difficult, either. Popular Mechanics online has a brief (yes, brief!) article on how to do just that.Essentially, any computer that “serves” data to other machines on a network is a server. And as American households become populated with multiple PCs, the idea of a central hub that can be used for backup, storage and even remote access becomes reasonable, even essential. Anticipating a household server market, HP recently launched its HP MediaSmart Home Server ($599), using Windows Home Server software as the operating system. The HP server comes with a single 500 GB hard drive (plus three empty drive bays for expansion), and can automatically back up compu ...

Taking Google Maps Too Seriously
2008-03-07 18:40:05
The Internet is a wonderful thing. So is information. But some things we do not want plastered all over the Internet, like our health records, and the floor plans to the Pentagon. Right? Google thinks otherwise.Pentagon Bans Google Team from BasesWASHINGTON (AP) -- Citing security risks, the Pentagon banned Google teams from making detailed street-level video maps of U.S. military bases after images of a Texas base ended up on the popular Internet site.A message sent to all Defense Department bases and installations around the country late last week told officials not to allow the mapping Web site to take panoramic views inside the facilities. Google said taking such pictures is against its policy and that the incident was a mistake.Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, chief of the U.S. Northern Command, said Thursday that that the decision to issue a formal ban was made after at least one Google crew requested and then was permitted access to a base, identified in the message as Fort Sam Hous ...

Remember Black Friday?
2008-03-07 17:54:43
It was only a few months ago. Remember it? All those hot deals promised to us, screamed at us, bombarding us every day on the television, newspapers, and on the Internet? How did it go for you?For me, it went... ok. I did actually line up at 4am! I was trying to nab a dirt-cheap Acer laptop. I never did get it. I will never do that again-- the temperature was near zero and we waited over an hour only to have all the worthwhile stuff sold out in 15 minutes. (There was no limit to purchases, so the college kids who had camped out all night bought up all the laptops). Grrrrr. What a waste. I needed a new laptop, because my old HP was near death, and since I work from my computer (like, all day), I had to have a new one. However, the good news is that I did nab a dirt-cheap laptop online at Office Depot! This, thanks to some great Thanksgiving deals I found at Black Friday.info, online. :) And all from the comfort of my very own (warm) home! I just *happened* to see a deep discount price, a ...

BlueCoat K9, Premier Internet Filter for Kids
2008-03-07 04:21:56
I was talking with my sister today, who also has scads of kids who use computers, and I mentioned Blue Coat K9. She had never heard of the program. I was surprised! I don't know where I first heard of it, but it was a few years ago. I love it. I have the program on all the computers and it works wonderfully.Blue Coat K9 is a "web protection" software-- an Internet filter-- that is downloadable to your computer. I have tried numerous free (and not free) programs, and K9 is by far the best I've ever had. It is extremely thorough. Check the link for more information. I checked and I see that it is Vista compatible now, too. I like that it is thoroughly customizable-- you can whitelist or blacklist specific sites, or types of sites. You can set time limits and monitor Internet activity. The only thing I do not like about it is that it signs you out automatically after fifteen minutes or so. This stinks if you have a long list of Internet activity to sift through. It is very annoying to hav ...

Internet Video Classifieds
2008-03-06 00:16:10
Surfing to all these money-making blogs these days has me thinking a lot about money! lol! The websites for the buying and selling of stuff has absolutely exploded. I think in the past six months, there has been a doubling of online marketing and trading. We stay-at-home moms aren't always looking for a good deal. Sometimes we are trying to MAKE a good deal! ;) I am not too fond of some of those auction-selling sites because the fees are out of this world. I stopped selling stuff online with them after the last postal rate increase, because the seller's rates skyrocketed. How about video classifieds? Has anyone tried them? How about video classifieds? That sounds so cool, I think! How about Listasaurus? Has anyone heard of them? I checked them out a few months ago. I haven't tried them yet because I'm waiting for spring to start clearing out my stuff, but I hear they are becoming quite popular (they have listings for real estate and employment, too). Plus, they have the cutest purple din ...
