Social media is influential. So use it.
2007-07-25 18:59:18
As we know, word of mouth is the strongest, most cost-effective form of marketing that any company could ask for. Blogs, videos and RSS feeds, to name just some, are great tools and channels that you can use to create “buzz”. But this becomes even truer when companies enter the market with a new product, [...] ...

Online Connectivity in Africa
2007-07-23 16:15:28
The New York Times is running a story that reports on the bittersweet investment by Greg Wyler to help improve Rwanda’s Internet connectivity and the, albeit slow, progress of Web penetration in Africa.
The article emphasises that numerous stumbling blocks have come into play to getting infrastructure projects off the ground in rural Africa. “In many [...] ...

The next big thing to Web 2.0
2007-07-17 14:16:41
Marion Jensen has written a thought-provoking article on how the “next big thing” will be the targeting of Web 2.0 technologies and content to a specific location.
I once posted that the Internet is a technological phenomenon, which facilitates and embodies two important aspects: a community of information users and a Web of data. Dubbed the “Semantic Web,” the Internet of today is quite literary about tagging, searching, analysing and processing information.
Ultimately, this “Semantic Web” will be, in simple terms, about information, metadata and technologies, all interrelated and cross referenced, and powered by personalised distribution systems. Naturally, the portability of this information is paramount in today’s era, which brings complete sense to Marion’s thoughts.
The Internet is a living thing, and as the Web 2.0 hype transforms to “Web 3.0”, new forms of businesses, revenue models, and communication strategies will emerge, which will be dictated by ...

User generated content user growth and the impact on online sales
2007-07-17 13:09:51
In its simplest form, user generated content is a mix of two types of participants: those that engage with social media and those who create it. Last month, eMarketer reported that those who consume user generated content, while rabidly growing, are outnumbering their creator counterparts.
Worldwide, the expected number of user generated content consumers in 2011 is said to hit 254 million, whereas the number of creators of user generated content is said to reach only about 238 million. This means that, contrary to some belief, there are more people consuming social media content that there are people creating it, which translates to having an audience. And when it comes to ad revenue, the figures are also growing. eMarketer further estimates that user generated content will generate $4.3 billion in ad revenue in the US by 2011, which is up from this year’s expected ad revenue of $1 billion.
However, marketers should understand that there is a difference between online advertising fo ...

50 Best Websites of 2007 by Time Magazine
2007-07-13 10:21:48
Time Magazine has put together their 2007 report of the best sites on the Web. The list aims, as Time puts it, to give credit to those sites that have improved the on- and offline experience by combining exceptional style with new generation ways of accessing, creating and sharing content.
Time’s list points us to some surprising selections and gives its readers a nice picture of what is out there on the Internet. The categories include Arts & Leisure, Audio & Video, News & Info, Social Networks, and Web Services, and each listed site includes a description detailing why they were chosen.
What I like is that Time is inviting their readers to contribute to the sites’ ranking by voting for their favourite sites in their poll. Be sure to add your mark here.
So, who made it as the top 5 best websites?

Is Facebook today what Google was a few years ago?
2007-07-12 15:23:34
Facebook is becoming one of the most talked about social networks and Web phenomena of the year. The reason for this is probably because it has developed into a fiercely popular and powerful networking channel that has grown and continues to grow largely through word-of-mouth.
But it’s also because Facebook is a technically robust, highly flexible, integrated platform that offers relevant content in a very usable manner. And if we think carefully, we realise that Google succeeded for very similar reasons. Aside from Google’s “PageRank” algorithm, I think that Google succeeded because of the quality of its complete integrated product offering and the ease of use for users. But there’s one thing that Facebook has that Google doesn’t; the human dynamics that connects us all.
I’ve been doing some reading today and came across Facebook valuations of $10 billion and rumours that Mark Zuckerberg could sell to Microsoft for $6 billion. But let’s not forget that last year Ma ...

New website metrics system to determine Web rankings
2007-07-12 10:15:00
Nielsen/Netratings, a benchmark online audience measurement firm, this week unveiled a new metrics system, which will replace its prior ranking systems. This move could result in some popular online destinations receiving lower rankings.
Instead of measuring traditional page views, Nielsen/Netratings will now measure total time spent on a website. Even though Nielsen/Netratings does already measure average time spent and average visits per visitor, it will place more emphasis on total time spent. “It is not that page views are irrelevant now, but they are a less accurate gauge of total site traffic and engagement,” said Scott Ross, director of product marketing at Nielsen/NetRatings. This makes complete sense.
I have already posted about how measuring value is one way we can use to measure online success. This extends to measuring how users are engaging with brands online, and becomes especially true for websites that are built around Web 2.0 technologies and social media c ...

The Internet is quite literally alive
2007-07-11 17:08:50
In the past, the Internet was a medium that delivered content to browsers and well, was not a very dialogue-orientated or alive medium. We went online to get information. And companies were online to push content. That was almost about it.
However, if there is one thing that you take home with you today, it’s that the Web is a medium or channel that represents two very important things: dialogue and exchange of data. And because of this, the Internet – whether we like it or not (I love it) is a part of our daily lives.
We see this point proven when we witness Internet users flocking online not to waste time but to use value-based services like Google Maps, Flickr, GMail, Wikipedia (who can live without it?) or Bloglines, and to interact with their communities and contacts not by phone but on social networks such as LinkedIn, MySpace or Facebook. This point is proved even more when entrepreneurs or marketing managers, quite successfully, start designing their businesses and marketin ...

Both articles and blog posts have merit
2007-07-10 13:35:12
If you know me, either professionally or personally, you know that I love to write. I guess I could come up with some idealistic reason for this but instead I’ll just leave it at that.
You will also know that I have various styles of writing. Some are on-the-fly pieces of short commentary and others are well-thought-of editorials or viewpoints, which I either post on this blog or publish in print. Then there are those nail biting, deadline-driven essays or to-the-point, tactical strategies that have less fluff and more gist . . . the point is, I like to think that I can write for various situations & audiences…and all my “styles” of writing work for me. Why? Because all my readers are different.
So, when Jakob Nielsen, a well regarded Web consultant and analysis who was labeled “usability guru” and, quite frankly, isn’t the most creative genius on planet earth, says that “To demonstrate world-class expertise, avoid quickly written, shallow postings. Inst ...

Google to reinvent social networking?
2007-07-09 09:57:37
According to Google Operating System, last year Google sponsored a social networking project, called Socialstream, at the Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
One of the project’s main goals was to investigate how social networking could be improved to bring more value to users. What came of this - and what I like about SocialStream - was a “unified social network (USN)”, which translates in simple English to an aggregation and consolidation of various social network data in a single place (see video below). As Mashable states, this is a more user-centric rather than network-centric approach to social networking.
From the project’s site, “Socialstream emphasizes improving social connections by making it more efficient to communicate with, share with, and view the social content of all the people in a user’s online social network. The garage where Google started
2007-07-05 15:55:56
I love stories like this. Gadgetopia points us to a USA Today article, which looks back at a woman, Susan Wojcicki, who rented her garage to Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founders, when the Search Engine company first started out. Little did she know that this move would change her life forever.
This ordinary action, which will go down in history, not only became the start to a global search empire but also landed Susan the position of vice president of product management at Google and sister-in-law to Sergery Brin. Also of interest is that in 2003, Susan gave birth to a multimillion-dollar product, AdSense.
Go read the article. Who knows, maybe an ordinary act of today could see millions in the bank account a few years down the line
