Online Marketing Tools: Compete.com
2008-04-03 21:08:18
We're starting a series of posts this week regarding free online marketing tools. You can get at least a general idea of how your site is performing without paying the big bucks to do it!However, if you want to get an exact update on your websites performance, you should be prepared to pay something! Our first tool this week is compete.com. This tool gives you a rough idea of how many page views your website is getting. You can also compare your website traffic with other websites (perhaps competitors?).While we have found this tool to be a bit unreliable when we compared it with our own statistics, it did give a fairly accurate description of the traffic trends. It was pretty consistent in letting us know when we had good months or bad months with traffic, although the numbers were not as accurate as they could be.The free level of compete. com will also tell you the top keywords you're appearing for. (You can get more, but you have to pay!) This will give you a little idea of how peop ...

Using a Blog for a Website
2008-03-28 21:38:34
Brand new businesses typically don't have a lot of capital to invest in an online presence. Using a free blog as your website can be a logical solution until your company has enough money to pay for a top notch site!Let's face it, if you're trying to build a legitimate business, you need an online presence. What that usually starts out as is a place where you can send people online. It doesn't have to be optimized with all the bells and whistles and everything a search engine web crawler is looking for. You just want to be able to hand out a business card with a URL on it.Blogs are your solution! There are several blog places online that actually let you create different pages along with your blog. The result is a blog that has the look and feel of a website and only seems to have a blog component to the typical internet user. These online tools allow you to upload pictures, videos and music in some cases. For a minimal investment you can even have your own domain name. This way no one ...

2008-03-25 21:33:01
Yes it's true! Google now effectively indexes flash sites for search engine placement! I know the internet is an ever-changing environment, and if you read yesterday's post you see first hand just how quickly things can change! While Flash sites are still a bit more expensive to develop, they are no where near the money suckers they used to be because of this one change by Google. If you can afford the development, Flash looks brilliant and now will be able to boost your search rankings as long as you do so in the correct way. We'll try to keep you posted on the subject of Flash sites as we learn more about how Google is indexing these sites. Until then... Flash on (if you want to)!

Planning for Future Web Presence
2008-03-24 21:05:06
As a small business just entering the online world, it is sometimes out of our reach to do everything we need to in order to have a marketable image and gain visibility. Many of us prefer to take on projects in steps anyhow. With proper planning, this approach works well for those wanting to make the financial burden of online marketing more affordable! One of the first steps (and most important) for your business' online livelihood is having a website. Not only does this give you a place for your customers to learn more about you, but it gives you a point of credibility as a legitimate business. (Two very important things!)It's been my experience with companies I've worked with that often the cost of websites AND establishing visibility are just too much money for the typical small business. At least all in one chunk. What ends up happening most of the time is a staged project with the first part being a website development and the next piece a visibility project.Designing your site to ...

2008-03-11 14:56:33

They may be customers/clients, friends, family or the guy sitting next to you on the subway. The point is, all of these people have the potential to be a marketing vehicle for you. All of these people can also help drive traffic to your website!Talking with people about what you do and what they do is a great way to benefit your business. You may also discover you can be a client of someone else too! The benefits of not having your head buried in the newspaper on your commute home don't stop at business. Online Marketing on a Budget
2008-02-21 03:15:28
Time and money are two things that seem to go hand in hand. When business is good, you don't have any time, but when things slow down you might find yourself counting your minutes and your beans. This post focuses on a couple things you can do with your time to increase business without increasing your budget.Internet marketing is great... most of the time it's the most cost effective marketing you can do! But we've all had those times when we've been forced into virtual "no-spend" mode. Yet, these are the times we need to look to market the most! So how do we do that?Believe it or not, there are many FREE ways to gain visibility online. One of the best examples is this blog. It doesn't cost me a cent, I have an RSS feed to stay in touch with my readers frequently, I'm establishing myself as an expert in my field and if I was really pushing my company, I could include links back to our website everywhere! All I invest is time (and how long does it take me to come up with a 250 word art ...

Buy More than One Domain Name for your Site
2008-02-15 15:43:10
When creating a website for your business, it's beneficial to register more than one domain name. It prevents other people from scooping up those similar names and using them for their own sites, which could possibly take business from you!Let me give you an example: Your business is Surf Shirt... Your website address is www.surfshirt.com. Anyone else could register the name surfshirts.com, surfershirt.com, etc.You get the idea. This could really hurt your business if the people operating those website with similar names offer similar products. It could really hurt when someone thinks they're at your site, but they're really at someone else's, and they have a bad experience. Now they have a bad impression of surfshirts.com when they thought they were at surfshirt.com.And trust me... when people have a bad experience, word travels extremely fast!To avoid this problem, the easiest solution is to register those similar domain names when registering for the one you wish to use. Just becaus ...

Make Money from your Website? Might not be such a Great Idea!
2008-02-12 21:23:00
Yes, you can use your website to make money while doing virtually nothing. But be careful, what seems like free money might actually come at a higher cost than you think!Anyone with a website has the ability to publish ads on it and make money. It could be a corporate deal or it might be with another online tool. One of the most popular programs used for making a profit with your website is Google's Adsense. This is a totally legitimate practice, and people use it all the time. You pay taxes on your earnings , and the money can be deposited right into your bank account. With this program you can actually choose the size, colors and placement for ads to other web destinations on your website. If you look to the right, you will see an Adsense ad on this web page. (Yes it's true, someone is making money if you click on that ad... Not much, but a couple pennies.)That sounds like a sweet deal, but you might actually be the loser if you're trying to use your website to convert visitors to clie ...

A huge bonus when you're trying to boost your search rankings! There are several ways in which you can keep your website up to date. Most don't require much, if any knowledge of HTML coding or any other technical expertise. If you know how to work your keyboard and mouse, you should be able to up date your website. Add Video to a Webpage? Think Twice!
2008-02-04 21:22:10
Putting a video viewer on a website on a website may actually detract from your visitor-to-client conversion rate. Websites with videos may seem to be everywhere, but is online video advertising really helping your business?Website animation is a very touchy subjects for a lot of areas especially if you're a b2b company. Depending on how you utilize your video, you may be drawing attention away from the message you want to convey to your audience. If you've ever tried to hold a conversation with a male in a room with a TV on, you know it's nearly impossible to keep him entirely focused on you and your message. Putting a video viewer on a website can have a very similar effect. The reason for this with males is simple. As a species, we've been genetically hard wired to pay attention to things that move. In our earliest forms (whatever that means to you), if we saw something move, as a male we had only two thoughts: Is it something I can eat? OR Is it something that's going to eat me?The e ...

What to expect from an SEO Services Provider
2008-02-01 00:03:06
SEO marketig typically delivers a much higher rate of success than any other advertising medium. It's also more cost effective. So how can your company else take advantage of search engine optimization?SEO enables you to reach a larger audience than any other medium including radio, sign-age, print ads and even television. It is also much less expensive in the long run than those same mediums. You should not have to subscribe to the services of an SEO provider. It's a fee for a service and once that service is complete, everything should continue to work. It's like hiring a plumber. If you have a leaky pipe, you pay for a plumber's services once and the leak is fixed (for a good while anyway). You don't pay him $400/month to keep your pipe from leaking. How can we say SEO is better than the other methods of advertising? Because it's measurable. With a good website statistics package you should be able to tell where your visitors are coming from, what they're doing on your website, and wh ...

Search Engine Marketing: Pay Per Click
2008-01-31 16:00:42
Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns or paid search listings are one of the fastest ways to gain visibility for your website. So how does it work?Let's start with identifying what a PPC listing actually is. When you search on Google for anything, you'll notice a shaded box at the top of the page with a few listings and a list of rectangular ads running down the right hand side of your screen. You may have also noticed "sponsored links" on websites you visit. These are all examples of PPC listings. In other words, people have paid to have their ad listed in these spots by bidding on certain keyword phrases.Sounds complicated, right? It's really fairly easy if you've got some time to do a little research first. Some popular programs include Google's AdWords, and Yahoo!'s Sponsored Search. Once you choose your program, you're off and running. The first step to an effective PPC campaign is researching the key phrases people might use to find your website. (Sounds eerily similar to SEO, I know!) Yo ...

Websites: Are They Enough?
2008-01-30 21:57:49
In all honesty... no. The idea of having a website for a business is great, but what's it doing for your business? Read on to find out ways you can make your website do something for you! Before you begin putting together the nuts and bolts of a website for your business, come up with a concept and a purpose for the website. You website should have a primary goal and secondary goals. Identify what they are, and make sure every page on your website supports those goals!I visit too many websites that convey absolutely no information about a business and how it can help me. Create something that will show people what they're missing by not using your products or services! That creates the question of how to get people to your website. The internet is not "Field of Dreams"! For those of you who have no idea what that means, it simply means if you build it, there's no guarantee they will come. You've got to show people the way to your website. I equate a website to having a business card in yo ...

Email Marketing and Design
2008-01-29 23:28:56
When it comes to email newsletter marketing for small businesses, there are several areas to consider such as design, monitoring results, software packages and outsourcing or in-house production. Let's take a look at each area:Design is tightly tied to the success of email marketing. You want to keep it simple so as not to overwhelm your recipients, but you also want it to look professional. You can have your newsletter appear as an HTML website or in text like a typical email. As you might imagine, the later is usually far less expensive. The rule of three is a simple guideline to follow. Keep your design to three topic areas of interest for each newsletter. Each area should have a title and a short 2-3 sentences about the full article located back on your blog, website or other online area. Make each compelling and easy to get to.Monitoring the results of your website is important as they can tell you what people are interested in, who's reading the newsletter and even automatically s ...

Well, yes because you're using a whole new method to reach people than traditional marketing vehicles of print, television, billboards, signage and radio. No because you still have the same goal in mind for your internet marketing as your other marketing methods. One of the most important things to consider for your online marketing campaign is content.
