CD Review: Fiona Joy Hawkins- Angel Above My Piano
2007-11-08 18:42:00
CD Review: Artist: Fiona Joy HawkinsTitle: Angel Above My PianoWebsite: http://www.fionajoyhawkins.comStyle: New Age/ClassicalBy Staff Writer L. Anne Carrington As a fan of different types of music, I was especially pleased to get hold of the latest release by Fiona Joy Hawkins, Angel Above My Piano. It is a perfect follow up to her debut work, the award-winning Portrait of a Waterfall; the previous album reached #1 on the New Age Reporter World Charts and was a finalist for the Best Piano Album at the 2005 NAR Lifestyle Music Awards. The opening track of Angel Above My Piano, "Crystal Desert," outlines Fiona Joy's journey across the world's coldest continent--Antarctica--and was inspired by her looking off the front of a boat into the dark clouds and a blizzard, finding a multi-colored sky at the other end of the boat, along with colors reflected in the snow. "Down the Aisle (Wedding March 2)" is perfect for any couple searching fo ...

CD Review: Artist: White StoneTitle: Days To RememberWebsite: http://www.myspace.com/whitestonenycCDBaby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/whitestone4Style: Avant Garde / Progressive Rock /InstrumentalRating: 7 out of 10By Senior Writer C.W. Ross Days To Remember is an instrumental release that's a collection of everything from jazz, classical, and folk to rock styles of music. The first couple of tracks where just a little to mellow for me. For the most part they feature melodic repetitive chords being played either on the keyboard or guitar. That all changed though once track 5, "Earthjazzblues" rolled around. "Earthjazzblues" is a 9-minutes musical explosion that mixes steady percussion and a mixture of jazz and blues/rock guitar parts. The band says that the song is a tribute to Frank Zappa/ Jeff Beck. This song is very entertaining and really rips it out for the entire 9-minutes that went by too fast. The next several tracks also take ...

CD Review: Artist: Christine RosanderTitle: Smooth RideWebsite: http://www.christinerosander.comStyle: Pop/Jazz/Folk Rating: 8.4 out of 10By Senior Writer C.W. Ross While Smooth Ride is the solo-debut release from Christine Rosander she has a long history with music that started with her performing at the young age of five. She has studied classical piano and earned a bachelor's degree in vocal performance along with commercial composing & arranging from Cal State Long Beach College. She also has a master's degree from USC in jazz studies. Christine Rosander puts all of that musical knowledge to use on Smooth Ride with its mixture of pop, jazz, folk, and blues styles of music. You'll also find one country flavored song, the first and title track, "Smooth Ride," complete with steel pedal guitar. Rosander describes her music as a mixture of Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Carol King in sound. Most of ...

CD Review: Artist: GollumTitle: Lesser Traveled WatersWebsite: http://www.gollum.ccStyle: Progressive/Experimental MetalLabel: IndependentRating: 6.5 out of 10By Staff Writer Levi Gordon In the world of music, there is a constant push to break free of boundaries, tear down industry "standards," and create songs that allow the artist to boast originality. Though many bands claim to have strong unique qualities, the truth is that many of them are easily comparable to other groups. Along comes Gollum. Though it would probably be dishonest to say that Gollum is unlike anything you've heard before, it would also be hard to describe them using common genre markings and comparisons to established groups. The music Gollum plays is a progressive and experimental form of metal that covers many sounds, sweeping from the dark and aggressive sounds of Zao to more synthesized and acoustic arrangements. Their album Lesser Traveled Waters features very l ...

CD Review: Artist: Noah HarrisonTitle: It May Only Be IgnoranceWebsite: http://www.noahharrison.comStyle: Acoustic/Lyrical/AmbientBy Staff Writer L. Anne Carrington Holding a sound that is both poetically inspective and gently compelling, It May Only Be Ignorance is an existential examination that builds and grows as its ten tracks progress. Based out of Portland, Maine, Noah is a singer/songwriter who had released his debut EP, Songs for a Long Night, in 2005. A quote from his website states that "prior and throughout all this he inhaled, exhaled and occasionally coughed. Listen, and you may hear plenty others doing the same." As with his debut release, this second CD by Noah is an entirely solo effort; a musical journey created via pen, paper and a guitar. This album also displays his first effort into audio engineering, and after giving It May Only Be Ignorance a listen, it all blends in very well. There's a l ...

Ross The main force behind HeatherSong is Heather Pahl. Besides handling vocals duties on some of the songs Yo, It's Christmas! was also arranged, written and produced by Heather Pahl. Heather has reworked the lyrics on several of the songs while the others remain true to the classic version of them. The arrangements are what's different about them. This release tries to incorporate different styles like, techno, funk, blues and HipHop into well-known Christmas songs. It worked with mixed results. The Hip-Hop numbers are more like an Osmond family style of Hip-Hop. The vocals were more rhythmic talking then rapping. The techno elements added into several of the songs though did add a nice modern twist to the classics. I reall ...

Case in point: the otherwise brilliant, inventive and eclectic Laura Aidanblaise. When I cracked open the press kit and read, "She collects gargoyles, makes soap as a hobby", I thought, well, so does my crazy old aunt, but I don't want to her sing. I sighed, put the CD into the player and was thrilled. Goofy pitch aside, Get Thee to the World is a great CD. Aidanblaise's voice is alternatively silky and aggressive. She's got a beautiful voice, but she's not afraid to make it ugly to make a point or make it jerky to create a phrasing effect that pulls the listener through like she does in a song like the first track, "Bloodlove", in which ...

His current CD, Wirebird, shows just how much music is indeed the best thing Craig knows how to do. There is such a different aura about it; the scratch of his voice combined with the innocent-flavored songwriting is the combination only someone of Craig's talent can pull off, and pull off exceptionally. Wirebird contains inviting songs that initially had gotten Craig noticed in his native Colorado; this album gives other independent music connoisseurs the opportunity to experience the variety that ranges everywhere from subtlety introspective to downright experimental.
