I Miss the 90s
2008-03-05 08:50:58
WARNING! Random babble ahead!I've been feeling a little bit nostalgic lately. I got a brand new computer all fresh with no music and as I began to download I found myself particularly attracted to 90's tracks that I loved as a kid. DON'T LAUGH, but I've been rocking out hardcore to Christina Aguilera, Nsync and Backstreet Boys ... (ok you have permission to laugh now.) I also have been drawn in to 90s rock, r&b, rap, dance, other pop ... Everything is bringing back so many memories of when I was a kid and a young teen so carefree, feeling like I'd be young forever, living a perfect childhood. Time flies to quickly!I've come to conclusion that the 70s was the best era for music, however the 90s is hands down my favorite.Damn, I totally loved this song and forgot about it ...

Finally, Another Britney Post
2008-02-13 20:41:25
Every music magazine I received this week featured Britney Spears. Hundreds of blogs are covering her as well alls I gotts say is ..I'm tired of trying to dissect this beeyotch. She's a waste in more ways than once. Do we really need to know how/why/when/what/where? More importantly who still gives a foook? I'd be happy if I never had to risk seeing her period panties again! The end........................................Side note: Hey, guys! I'm finally making an appearance. I'm still working two jobs so its been hard to make the time to write about music. I'm quitting one job next month so I will finally have the time again. I'm really looking forward to coming back :) ...

The Eight Sexiest Sirens of Indie Rock
2008-01-08 22:44:35
I found this list compilation from OMG Lists! and have to say I found it refreshing and agreed with majority of the list. Every one knows Beyonce is hot, Rihanna is hot, Gwen, Jessica Simpson, ect. But, I think it is about time to acknowledge new pretty faces of the less mainstream scene.8- Joanna NewsomWhen most people think of musical instruments, they tend to envision things like guitars, drums and pianos. But not a lot of people will think of the harp. Pay some attention to the beautiful Joanna Newsom, however, and the harp will suddenly look a whole lot more enticing. The lovely Ms. Newsom owns a fragile sounding voice that still somehow manages to convey a sense of strength; she's ridiculously easy on the eyes as well.7- Kori GardnerThe only thing that could potentially keep Kori Gardner, one half of the awesome Mates of State, of our list is the fact that she's happily married to her bandmate, drummer Jason Hammel. And while it's wrong to ogle another man's wife, especially cons ...

Genitorturers - I Touch Myself (SotD#12)
2008-01-08 10:55:49
When I listen to the Divinyls version of “I Touch Myself” I hear the story of a woman a woman completely smitten by a man; willing to do anything to please him and, in a way, she is using him to justify her sexuality in a slightly desperate/submissive way.But with the Genitortureres’ slightly altered lyrics and machine-like industrial sound I hear a story of female dominance. A woman USING a man as a cure for her lust, and forcing him to put her sexual needs first; demanding that he do nothing less than fall down on his knees to worship her. When Gen puurs that she touches herself she merely throwing the bloke a bone as if to say “Good boy.” Yes, Mistress Gen! I completely agree with your concept. Get the F*ck Out of My Show!
2007-12-17 19:29:33
A bit of controversy erupted last week when Tori Amos told two front row fans to get the fuck out of her San Diego show! Before security guards escorted the two girls out she scolded them by saying that sitting in the front row is a privilege and those seats are hers to reserve for the true fans. (video posted below)According to MollyKnight.com (12/12) the girls were being loud, antsy and talkative during Tori's set and were obviously distracting her. She seemingly bit her tongue through a couple of songs, before finally blowing up.Reading the comments at other blogs I have seen a mixed reaction over how people feel about the incident; some people have called Tori a pretentious jerk for booting the girls out, others (and apparently the crowd at the show) have supported her saying they appreciate that Tori recognized the problem and got rid of it.So, the question I ask is: Is it ever OK for artists to kick fans out of their shows? In my opinion, I just can't see any validation in the arg ...

Rewriting Record Contracts: The 360-Deal
2007-12-12 10:57:30
Since 2001 record sales have staggered in decline at an estimated 25%. Record labels invest a large amount of money into acts, and for the past few years it has not being paying off. What once was a deal of artists agreeing to hand over about 85% of album shares, but pocketing profit from tours, merchandising and publishing has been morphed into what is called the “360-Deal” or the “Multi-Rights Deal”. What this means is that not only do record labels get about 70-85% of album sales, they will also receive a cut of tour sales, merchandising, and publishing. The 360 Deal allows labels to capitalize on artists as a brand and push more paths of revenue, thus giving the label more incentive to push the success of an act and market them in every way possible( this is due to the growing "mogul" trend amongst most current artists). The label will now own the act in everything they do and pocket a rough estimate of 30-50% of net earnings. Well what exactly does that mean? Here ...

Music Innovation: Gibson Robot Guitar
2007-12-12 08:19:49
Last week on December 7, 2007 guitar manufacturing company, Gibson released the much-anticipated Gibson Robot Guitar. The Robot is a Les Paul-esque luxury guitar ran by lightweight microprocessors and motorized tuner knobs to automatically tune itself in accordance to the owner’s preference. The guitar features a push-pull LED Master Control Knob that is the dictator and mastermind of the guitar. When the Master Control Knob is set to “tune” you would simply strum the guitar once which signals the tune-control-bridge to adjust the pitch of the strings, the bridge then drives the Powerhead motorized knobs to adjust themselves accordingly to achieve the perfect tune for the guitar. The Master Control Knob features six pre-set tuning options such as Standard Open E, DADGAD, Drop D, Open G, Flat E and Double Drop D. Wait! There’s more! Not only does the Robot auto-tune itself, it will also assist with string changes and intonation. Robot will literally “walk” the player through ...

Is Led Zeppelin the Greatest Band Ever?
2007-12-11 23:23:51
Minnesota Public Radio proposed this question along with the following piece:"With all the media coverage of the Led Zeppelin reunion there has been several mentions of them being the greatest band ever. Mojo magazine referred to them that way, Rolling Stone put them on the cover and called it "the most sort after reunion in rock'n'roll history." The BBC reported that people from over 70 countries were at the show earlier today and had interviews with many of them saying in many different accents..."they are the greatest band ever!"While they were 'away' a few have made a grab for the title, most commonly perhaps the Stones, who have a claim simply through longevity, but who wins?Let's answer this once and for all, which side are you on and explain why;The A-Side of the argument is ..."Led Zep are the best band ever"B-Side...if not them then who?"My Answer:Do I think Led Zeppelin is the greatest band in the World or ever? Honestly, no. I don't think it is possible for any band to be th ...

Billboard Top 40 Report Card by B. Featherstone

Review #1 October 31, 20071) Soulja Boy “Crank That (Soulja Boy)â€Soulja Boy upeenit whoooa wabbleyleenit wabbney whoop?!!? Do not want. D-2) Chris Brown “Kiss, Kissâ€Catchy chorus and semi-danceable beat **POSITIVITY ENDS HERE** The verses are corny and the digitization is annoying. T-Pain sucks. Nappy Boy and Pretty Boy? Both should suck on a stick of STFU. D+3) Timbaland “Apologizeâ€Why is this song a hit? Who is it appealing to? I can’t decipher if it’s an emo track. A sensitive soft-rock song? An r&b jam? Something you make love to your old lady to? Lame, whack, and all of the above. I’m not feeling it at all and I LIKE Timbaland. F4) Alicia Keys “No Oneâ€Why is she screaming? It’s not even one minute into the song and already her voice is going hoarse. Alicia, that’s when you know that style of singing sucks for you. The song is ok, but Alicia has done better. C+5) Colbie Caillat “Bubblyâ€Decent song, I don’t object to it. Her vocals are a bit humd ...

Chris Rock Criticizes The Music Industry
2007-12-11 21:11:17
And I agree!Chris says:"Music kind of sucks. Nobody's into being a musician. Everybody's getting their mogul on. You've been so infiltrated by this corporate mentality that all the time you'd spend getting great songs together, you're busy doing nine other things that have nothing to do with art. You know how shitty Stevie Wonder's songs would have been if he had to run a fuckin' clothing company and a cologne line? … Rap sucks, for the most part. Not all rap, but as an art form it's just not at its best moment. Sammy The Bull would have made a shitty album. And I don't really have a desire to hear [billionaire] Warren Buffett's album - or the new CD by Paul Allen. That's what everybody's aspiring to be."Which brings us to my rant: Why don't people care about the music these days? Why is music simply viewed as just another platform to rake in cash? I'm tired of seeing these supposed musicians slapping their name on any and everything out of greed. Clothing lines, perfumes, cellphones ...

TOOL Concert Review (11-19-07)
2007-12-11 21:08:03
“Wow.” I thought as I arrived to see TOOL last night (November 19, 2007) at the Tulsa Convention Center. The traffic and parking wasn’t atrocious but police officers were lined up at the door: We had to be frisked before going in. Thoroughly frisked. Typically only attending small venue shows, I had never been frisked before. But that was understandable and fine. The Dimebag tragedy was one too many. I took my seat and shortly after 8, TransAm (a band I had never heard of before) graced the stage. I’m not going to outright say those guys sucked, but they were unimpressive. Their sound was loud and obnoxious synth pop; the vocals were yelled and annoyingly digitalized. However, it could just be that their type of music is the kind that does not work well live. They may sound good on record, and since I’m into some synth-pop I'd be willing to give them another chance. TransAm played about 5 songs and left behind a nonchalant crowd. It seemed as if an eternity went by du ...

Ten Guilty Pleasure Songs
2007-12-11 21:07:15
Songs I will never let others catch me enjoying ..10) Korn "Twisted Transistor"Ask a Korn fan, any true Korn fan and they will tell you that this song is so not metal. It's incredibly NOOB, a watery poop nugget from Korn's past material, sell out in the extreme. I still think it's the coolest song they've ever done.9) Lil Kim "How Many Licks"She’s dirty, she’s horny, she’s slutty, shes in control. I love it!8) Gwen Stefani "What You Waiting For?"The decline of my beloved Gwen, yet I find this song perfectly acceptable, and only this song. Please Gwen, go back to your bitchin pre-2002 No Doubt ways.7) My Chemical Romance "Demolition Lovers"No one knows I once listened to emo. Like 6 years ago, OK?!6) Hollywood Undead "Turn Off the Lights"Dumbest excuse for a band/rap group ever. So why do I have their song downloaded to my computer?!5) Jennifer Lopez "Get Right"Jennifer sucks so bad. She's so obnoxious and squealy. However, I can ride the elliptical like no ones business when this ...

Underworld - Cowgirl (SotD#14)
2007-12-11 21:06:42
“Cowgirl” is the sexiest “breakup” song I’ve heard. I mean, seriously when recording this song what message was Underworld looking to convey? Did they want us to procure anti-depressants or prophylactics? Eh, same difference right? Some say “Cowgirl” is about kinky, lustful, sadistic-masochist sex. I, on the other hand, am almost fully convinced that “Cowgirl” is a story of heartache. Karl Hyde sings lyrics of a guy who has been dumped by his woman. He can’t stop thinking about her, dreaming about her, feeling the hurt of his love, yet he’s simply invisible to her.Sounds depressingly mushygushyblech, right? Nah, despite the meaning this song is upbeat and demands to be danced to. “Cowgirl” starts with a dismal, trance-like “getty-up” intro and progresses a techno-dance track. Karl Hyde’s vocals are digitally altered to a sexy, deep, raspy, growl. Also his obscure lyrical styling is still slightly present in “Cowgirl” however; the gist of this song i ...

Ten Songs Named After Celebrities
2007-12-11 21:06:06
In no particular order ..1) Rasputina - Kate MossRasputina is a cello-playing Goth super trio. "Kate Moss" is a bit creepy and morbid sounding, yet it's slightly humorous. A open letter of sorts addressing Kate and her image in the media.2) Gorillaz - Clint EastwoodDoesn't need much commentary as I don't know a person who isn't familiar with this song. Samples music from Clint Eastwood's film "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly".3) I'm From Barcelona - BritneyThe greatest thing Britney Spears has done in the past few years was inspire this song. I'm from Barcelona rocks out about the media's obsession with Crazy Ass BS. A bit tongue-in-cheek about her "awesomeness". Or at least I hope so.4) Amy Anne - Johnny DeppSuch a cute song, albeit a bit psycho-obsessive. I like the "lounge" sound of it.5) The Postal Service - Clark GableI'm not sure how I feel about the Postal Service. I give them credit for techno-emo and making it work. "Clark Gable" sounds similar to their hit "Such Great Heights" ...

Amazon MP3 Store: Potential Apple iTunes Destroyer?
2007-12-11 21:04:26
Only 3 months after its launch, Amazon.com’s new MP3 Store is already the 3rd largest digital retailer in the U.S., right under iTunes (#1) and Emusic (#2). This rank is an incredible achievement, but may leave some wondering what all the buzz about and how Amazon has achieved such quick success. Here’s a simple break down of why buyers are loving Amazon MP3 Store and why Amazon poses as a huge competitive threat to the top dog of the digital download industry. Catalogs and Price Amazon MP3 Store features over 2 million songs with catalogs from major labels such as Universal and EMI, along with over 200,000 independent labels. The mp3 tracks are high-quality, encoded at 256 kbps DRM-free and sold for as little as 89 cents, or less if if they are offering specials or free downloads. In comparison iTunes has triple Amazon’s music stock, offering 6 million songs. However, their tracks are lower-quality at 128 kbps in AAC format priced 99 cents Fairplay DRM and, a smaller ...

Ten Awesome Cover Songs

Songs that are almost better than the originals ..10) Howie Beno and Cruella Deville - She Bop (Cyndi Lauper)Goth-ish rocked out version of the Pop original.9) Jose Gonzalez - Teardrop (Massive Attack)8) Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights (The Postal Service)While the original was very sweet, Sam Beam Beam makes this song downright dreamy and romantic.7) Brown Derbies - Karma Police (Radiohead)The Brown Derbies covered this song Acapella. Not too many Radiohead fans care for it, I think it's awesome.6) Genitorturers - I Touch Myself (Divinyls)See previous review5) Nickle Creek - Toxic (Britney Spears)This is a fricken bluegrass band covering a fallen pop princess. It's impressive how they incorporated every instrument in the band to match spot on to the digitally-composed original.4) Calexico - Alone Again Or (Love)3) Revolting Cocks - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (Rod Stewart)Industrial-Dance. My Top Ten Favorite Albums
2007-12-11 21:01:48
1) Fight Club: Original Score The Dust BrothersThis ain’t radio or MTV-friendly, but it is the best damn soundtrack on the market. People either love or hate this album because it’s gloomy, musically experimental and nearly lyric-less (only one song has vocals on it and it is those of Tyler Durden). However this soundtrack is stellar; it's well-produced and complimented Fight Club the film perfectly.2) Gorillaz GorillazGorillaz’s not-so humble beginnings. Gorllaz is a blend of musical styles including trip/hip hop, punk, reggae, latin, electronica, rock …. and surprisingly it all works!.3) Mezzanine Massive AttackMusical Masterpiece. Mezzanine is the album that brought trip hop to the mainstream masses, and is considerably one of the most innovative works of our time.4) Mer de Nomes A Perfect CircleThe MdN era is the most talented and creative APC has ever been, and perhaps ever will be. Each song is exceptional and imaginative; it’s like listening to an adventurous, somewhat ...

OMG! Britney Spears DID Sing Live! YAY!
2007-12-11 20:57:46
Why am I blogging about Britney's Lipsyncing Antics? Because I care about you guys and I thought you should know and be better feeling. Yes, let's take a moment to timewarp back to 1999 when this was still shocking and people still gave a damn.I want to start by saying I kinda dislike Britney at her current state. In fact I think she's an asshole. A burbling, self-absorbed, spoiled, borderline-retarded, mentally-stunted, mucky asshole. But, I have to give her credit because she did sing live when everyone said she didn't. She really did. It's just that someone, somehow reached deep into her mouth, got ahold of her larynx and kinda ripped and tugged and twisted it then shoved a handful of razor blades down her esophagus causing her to be slightly offpitch, out of breath and vocally unstable; so they had to dub a back track over her to even out the tone and enchance her vocal abilities. But still, she did it!Don't believe me? Listen here!(This was during the height of her career back in ...

College Radio Top 200 Albums
2007-12-11 20:57:01
Top 10 report card review of CMJ's Top 200 College Radio Chart for November 7, 20071) Iron and Wine Shepherd’s DogSam Beam is still as charming as ever with his almost-whisper singing, and folk-melodies. But it’s apparent that while recording Shepherd’s Dog, he discovered a new musical style and influence without completely abandoning his old ones. This album isn’t quite what I expected, but it’s nearly as perfect as I had hoped. A2) Animal Collective Strawberry Jam“Uuh we are such peculiar artistes and no one understands us. This makes us undeniably indie and better than THOU!”Animal Collective had to thinking something along those lines while recording this overly bizarre and noisy excuse for an album (and let me tell ya, it aint bizarre or noisy in the way that I like music.) Strawberry Jam features a terribly off key vocalist who sometimes resorts to screaming, faux-yodeling and, at times, even croaking his way through songs. On top of that, the album includes the hea ...

Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (SotD#11)
2007-12-11 20:55:32
One thing I really love about the French sample-masters, Daft Punk is their ability to mix funk and electronica together to create some “funky electronica”. No, but seriously, Daft Punk makes music that sounds like it was retrieved from a time vault of 1970 and put through a boiling process of futuristic wave-sounds And perhaps that is the case. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” unmistakably samples Edwin Birdsong’s 70s hit “Coke Bottle Baby” plucking out the disco guitar and bass riffs and entwining them with electronic sound effects and vocal digitalization. Imagine a flashback hit in the year 2001. Groovy, man.Check out my Songs of the Week playlist to hear a sample of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" from the 2001 Daft Punk album Discovery. ...

Do Artists Need Record Labels?
2007-12-11 20:53:54
Or do record labels need artists? In 2007 we are in the age of the Internet where everything is just a mouse click away. Music distribution readily available 24 hours on the Internet, and burned into our I-Pods within seconds from the comfort of our homes. We the consumer are more inconvenienced to actually go out and purchase a disc and as a result albums sales have taken a nosedive and major artists have noticed.Prince left his label years ago and has successfully continued his career. Paul McCartney broke ties with his label and has signed a deal with Starbucks to promote and distribute his records. Trent Reznor has commented that Nine Inch Nails is delighted to have the freedom to take their career into their own hands and develop a direct relationship with the fans. Now Madonna has left Warner and signed a multi-million deal with concert promoter, Live Inc.The smartest, and most internet-savvy idea was that of Radiohead who took their new album, In Rainbow and released it online fo ...

Heart - Crazy on You (SotD#10)
2007-12-11 20:51:38
"Crazy on You" was the first single from the female-fronted 70's classic rock band, Heart. Released on their debut album, Dreamboat Annie, the song tells a quite simple tale: Good sex cures all anguish and temporarily relieves us of our troubles (Can't argue with that!) Like many other songs by classic acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Grateful Dead, "Crazy on You" achieved little Billboard success (it's highest peak being 35), yet it remains to be one of Heart's most memorable songs and is still routinely played on classic rock stations around the country.Listen to "Crazy on You" now on my Songs of the Week playlist and tell me your thoughts of this pick! ...
