Nightly Clean-Up
2008-05-08 19:58:03
Ever since I became a mother, I’ve struggled with keeping the house clean and not letting chores overwhelm me throughout the day. A few weeks ago the “chore issue” came to a head again as I felt I was doing WAY more than anyone else in the house.
Then I read an article in The [...] ...

2008-04-22 23:40:17
Yes, it’s TV Turnoff Week. The fact that Earth Day (the 22nd) falls during TV Turnoff Week (April 21-27) is an added bonus. There are many ways turning off the TV helps the planet:
Less electricity used.
Less exposure to consumer ads which leads to unnecessary purchases that use up resources.
More time to enjoy nature.
More [...] ...

Sex After Baby
2008-04-10 18:52:41
I found a great essay by about dealing with the “sex after baby” issue. Not always, but usually, men and women are at very different places about when to resume sexual intimacy after they become parents. It can lead to conflict between you and your partner, which is the last thing you need [...] ...

Reflections on my Postpartum Depression
2008-04-02 20:55:09
This is an entry from the journal I kept during and after the time I experienced postpartum depression. When I wrote this entry I was feeling better, but I still found myself needing lots of time to reflect on the experience and process what had happened. I felt haunted by it at times.
5/25/96 [...] ...

Great tip for expectant parents from mom, Terri Strack: Purchase an eye mask to use in the hospital and when you get home. Hospital staff often have to come in and check you while you’re sleeping. When they turn on the light, it can wake you up and ruin the sleep you desperately [...] ...

Mom appreciation–you are not invisible
2008-03-03 20:39:39
Becoming a mother makes you feel so much more empathy for other mothers, including ones you will never know on the other side of the world. My compassion for other mothers and my desire to help someone in distress drastically increased after I gave birth.
That’s why I want you to know how much I [...] ...

Maternity Leave and Employment Patterns of First-Time Mothers
2008-02-28 20:14:02
Last Monday, (2/25), a report was released by the U.S. Census Bureau titled, “Maternity Leave and Employment Patterns of First-Time Mothers.” I found the charts and statistics fascinating in the report as a window into how women’s lives have changed since the 1960s.
The report first analyzes trends in women’s work experience prior to their [...] ...

Postpartum Impression - New mom care in France compared to the US
2008-02-07 23:11:59
We’ve been upped again in the health care field by the French. Check out this New York Times article on perineal re-education by an American writer currently living in Paris.
Here’s an excerpt:
After a woman [in France] has a baby, perineal re-education shapes up her stretched-out birth canal. It also strengthens her pelvic floor for [...] ...

Movie Synopsis: Birth: its a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part [...] ...

2008-01-10 18:49:16

Self-Care - are you scheduling it?
2007-12-06 19:54:51
Last Saturday, I attended a six-hour all women retreat. November was a month of many deadlines and other stresses, so I was VERY ready for this retreat.

Income and Housecleaning
2007-11-28 20:14:04
A recent study found that married women do about one less hour of housework per week for every $7,500 they earn as full-time workers outside the home, regardless of the husband’s income.
I found the study’s conclusions interesting, but was surprised about the following comments from women in the article:
“It’s not about the paycheck for [...] ...

2007-11-15 19:31:26
I thought this article in the 11/14/07 of Dollar Stretcher for Parents gave some interesting points about the financial and environmental benefits of using cloth diapers.
I used both cloth and disposable diapers with my girls, but I wish I had known at the time how much I could have saved by using cloth [...] ...
