What did you do for your marriage today?
2007-07-07 17:28:01
The USCCB (Catholic Bishops) have launched a new campaign that I can really get behind: What did you do for your marriage today?
It's a campaign to encourage married couples by giving them tips and advice on strengthening their marriage. There's even a website called For Your Marriage that is full of interesting advice on marriage. To me it seems the key component is trying to encourage married people to do something everyday - even something small - for their spouse. There are commercials running in several parts of the country and the plan is to push this over the next couple of years.
With marriage collapsing - even among Catholics - in the US, this is a great campaign that can have a positive value on the lives of families. I think this is exactly the kind of encouragement (without being to preachy for nominal or non-Catholics) that can help any man or woman become a better spouse. They also do a great job of dealing with divorce on the site.
Every marriage has difficult ti ...

Prayers for our Country
2007-07-05 03:15:53
As a family, we haven't done our best to instill our children to pray for our country. However, we're trying to change that - and the 4th of July is a wonderful place to start. And why not start with the Patron Saints?
The Blessed Virgin Mary - typically as Our Lady of Guadalupe - is the official patron saint of the Americas. However others, like Blessed Kateri Tekawitha (shown here), are perfect for this as well. I've also seen St. Rose of Lima listed as a patron of the Americas and she is also perfect.
So take some time and develop a devotion to these Saints (especially Mary!) and ask for prayers for our country. We certainly could use a little divine help!
God bless,
Jay

Catholic issues with The Nativity
2007-06-21 15:27:40
The Hollywood movie, The Nativity, is clearly a flawed portrayal of the birth of Christ. And I thought it was worth pointing out some of the bigger problems the movie has in case you hear questions about it.
Overall a significant amount of the movie is simply invented for the sake of creating drama. Instead of using our rich Christian tradition to fill in the holes in the Gospel accounts, they choose to simply invent meaningless scenes that confuse more than educate. This was a flaw in the strategy they used and it really reduced the value of the movie tremendously – it changed it from “A True Story” to “Based on a True Story” in a sense.
So here are the issues I had from a Catholic perspective. If I missed anything, please add a comment with your thoughts.
Joachim and Anna. Mary’s parents are portrayed as downright hostile to her. These Saints of the Church were supportive and believed by all accounts. But The Nativity destroys their Godly values and makes them simply ...

Catholic Carnival 122: Better Late than Never
2007-06-09 04:41:05
Okay, this Carnival is extremely late. My apologies – I had some personal and work things that prevented me from getting it done on time. However, sometimes the best comes to those who wait (I’m stretching, I know) and this one is a good Carnival. So without any more delays, enjoy:
Christus Vincit starts us off with Sacramentum Caritatis. This post comes from CV's Louisiana correspondant Jason Pennington. Here he posts the series of articles he has written for the forthcoming bulletins at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Lafayette, LA, where he is music director and organist.
Next is Postscripts from The Catholic Spitfire Grill offering us The Invitatory Psalm. Cool insights from the fifth century about the Invitatory Psalm a gift from our brothers and sisters in the faith who went before us.
And Book Reviews and More fulfills his namesake with Sherman Oak and the Magic Potato by S. William Shaw. Though not a large 'C' Catholic book, the message of this book is definitely univer ...

Modesty and Catholic Girls
2007-06-01 16:12:33
1 Timothy 2:9 . . . [W]omen should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds as befits women who profess religion.
Sex sells. And so in our age raising modest children – particularly girls – has become more difficult than ever. Even from a young age our children are bombarded with images that emphasize the need to be “sexy.” Abercrombie & Fitch has made a business by polluting our children with this mentality that requires an adult sexuality in our children. So what is a good parent to do?
The Importance of Modesty
I have four young girls. And the oldest is just getting to the age where she notices these ads (she’s probably a bit past that age, actually). At this point it’s difficult to take a trip to the mall because of stores like Victoria’s Secret which push sex on even the youngest passer-by. But modesty is important. I recently read Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. ...

Prayers for us on Memorial Day
2007-05-28 16:49:51
Prayer on Memorial Day
Lord Jesus Christ,
Today we honor the memory of those men and women
who have given their lives for their compatriots
in the cause of freedom.
They have worked, fought, and died
for the heritage of freedom, brotherhood, and honor
that they have passed on to us.
Help us to recall that you yourself
gave up your life for all human beings
in the cause of true freedom -
to save us from self-love and sin.
Teach us the true meaning of peace and freedom,
that the real battle must always take place within ourselves
before it will be won in families and nations.
Make us keep your memory in our Eucharistic celebrations
and pray for the peace and freedom of the whole world.
Prayer to St. Martin of Tours (Patron Saint of Soldiers)
Dear well-beloved Saint,
you were first a soldier like your father.
Converted to the Church,
you became a soldier of Christ,
a priest and then a Bishop of Tours.
Lover of the Poor,
and model for pagans and Christians alike,
protect our soldier ...

Reaping the Whirlwind of Abortion
2007-05-03 04:14:37
I don't think as a society we hear enough about how abortion affects even those who don't actually have an abortion. And I'm always happy to hear a Bishop speak plainly on what elections mean to us. So when Bishop Doran of the Rockford diocese posted this, I had to add it at Living Catholicism:
I want to touch on this matter before we get too close to the November madness. As human beings, as citizens of a “first world country,” as Americans, and as Catholics, most importantly, we have to take count of the circumstances in which we live. We know that the only creatures of God that outlast time are those created having intellect and will. All other things, with the passage of time, break up or break down.
Many of the issues that confront us are serious, and we know by now that the political parties in our country are at loggerheads as to how to solve them. We know, for instance, that adherents of one political party would place us squarely on the road to suicide as a people.

Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. Meg Meeker: A Book Review
2007-05-01 03:33:24
As a father of four girls, the book Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters was required reading for me. And the time will certainly pay off in the lives of my young girls. This is a book written by a family doctor and psychiatrist who has treated numerous women and girls over her 25 years of practicing medicine (and, not incidentally, is a woman). But what shines in this book is the research into studies and real-life examples that underline her points. This is a must-read for any Christian father (the book is not explicitly Catholic, so non-Catholic men are just as likely to enjoy it).
Subtitled 10 Secrets Every Father Should Know, this book explores the type of father that girls need to become strong, competent women without emotional, physical, or mental problems. The chapters guide us toward becoming better men as well as better fathers. Each tackles a particular “secret” and includes substantial research, real-world examples and guidance on how to achieve the goal. Chapter titles ...

This just in: Religious Parents = Better Kids
2007-04-26 15:19:01
Thought I would point out this article about a new study that shows:
The children of parents who regularly attended church services and talked with their child about religion were rated by both parents and teachers as showing better behavior, self-control skills and social skills than children from non-religious families. Children whose parents both attended church regulary were rated as having the best behavior and being the most well-adjusted.
This conclusion seems somewhat obvious - or at least logical - from other studies I've read, but it's nice to see someone study this specifically. My first thought was that religious parents were likely less self-centered, which the author hits on as well:
As well, religious congregations tend to emphasize self-sacrificing, pro-family values, which could be "very, very important in shaping how parents relate to their kids, and then how children develop in response."
So be a good Catholic and your children will be better as well! A win-win ...
