By Kristina Cooke NEW YORK (Reuters) - Another grueling week for Wall Street could be in store, even as some see value among the wreckage wrought so far this year as fretful investors remain jumpy over prospects for the economy and wary of more trouble at bond insurers. Another worry is whether China's stock market, which was closed for the Lunar New Year holiday during much of the past week's turmoil, could trigger another bout of selling globally when it reopens on Wednesday and tries to catch up. Before then, however, bond insurers, most notably MBIA Inc's MBIA Insurance Corp and Ambac Financial Group Inc's Ambac Assurance Corp, will likely be central to the market's direction, analysts said. The two are on the hook for billions of dollars after guaranteeing repackaged subprime mortgages and other risky debt that have now soured. Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Josef Ackermann, for one, has warned that the bond insurers' difficulties could lead to the next financial crisis. &

NEW DELHI: Aiming to reduce delays and bring transparency in the payment system, Railways are going ahead with the plan for e-payment for freight service. "We had launched a pilot project last year and this year, we are expanding it to the entire railway system," a senior official in the Ministry of Railways said. Freight, one of the major sources of income for Indian Railways, is collected at station where a customer books goods for transporting to another station through train. At present, freight collected from the customer is deposited to the local branch of the bank by Railways. As a result, there are delays in making payment because of the long procedures involved in the current transaction system, the official said, adding the e-payment system will reduce the delay to a large extent. Under the e-payment scheme, the required amount for freight is transferred from consignee's bank account within few seconds with a click of the button through terminal management system, a software

Indeed, he scoffs at those who talk about his loss there as if it came in an early round rather than the semifinals.Sure, when asked on Thursday about what happened in Melbourne, the No. 1-ranked Federer made a passing reference to ``small regrets,'' such as wishing he'd managed to successfully serve out the first set of his defeat to eventual tournament champion Novak Djokovic.Federer, though, is really focusing on the future - particularly on his next chances to add to a career total of 12 Grand Slam singles championships, two shy of Pete Sampras' record.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Agriculture negotiations in the World Trade Organization's Doha round are slowly moving forward, but serious divisions remain on surge protections and goods that will be sheltered from tariff cuts, a senior U.S. trade official said on Wednesday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was too soon to count on a meeting by late March of trade ministers from the WTO's 150 member nations, as some had envisioned, a step that would consolidate over six years of fractious talks and produce, at last, a close-to-final deal. While negotiations among trade bureaucrats in recent months have helped narrow differences, the official said, major obstacles remain. Those include, from the U.S. perspective, the quantity of products that each developing and developed country would be allowed to shelter from full tariff cuts, along with special surge protections for developing countries. Washington has long argued, in spite of loud protests from emerging marke
By Jui Chakravorty Das DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp on Wednesday reported worldwide sales of 9.37 million vehicles in 2007, coming in just ahead of Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp in a closely watched race for the top spot in global sales. GM, which was expected to lose its title of the world's largest automaker for the first time in 76 years, sold 9,369,524 vehicles in 2007. Toyota sold about 9,366,000 units, a source told Reuters on Wednesday. The Japanese automaker earlier this month publicly announced global sales of 9.37 million for 2007, saying it would disclose more precise figures in late January. GM said its total global sales rose 3 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong growth in regions outside North America. Still, the two automakers are neck-and-neck, with only about 3,500 vehicles separating them at a time when Toyota has been growing in the United States -- the world's single largest market for vehicle sales -- while GM's domestic market s

By Herbert Lash NEW YORK (Reuters) - A heavy gloom hanging over Wall Street may deepen next week unless such bellwether companies as Apple and United Technologies provide investors with hope that the U.S. economy can avert recession. A slew of major corporations, also including Bank of America Corp, Microsoft Corp and AT&T Inc, will release their quarterly earnings in a shortened trading week that has scant economic data scheduled for release. Markets will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr Day. "Earnings next week are the only thing that the market has to hang its hat on. With the market in such a fragile condition, those earnings better be good or we could see some severe selling," said Richard Sparks, senior equities analyst with Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, on Friday. With a government report showing the weakest job gains since 2003, some analysts are calling out a bleak forecast. But the negative news may just be enough to force the Fed into action. By Elizabeth StrottAfter the worst monthly jobs report in four years, people are starting to use the R-word again."These jobs data are the strongest evidence so far that the economic expansion is grinding to a halt," Peter Morici, professor at the University of Maryland School of Business and former chief economist at the U.S. International Trade Commission, wrote in a note to clients Friday morning."Slow jobs growth, along with the shortages of mortgage and business credit, declining home prices and residential construction, and falling industrial production, indicate the risk of a recession for 2008 is high," he continued. The Labor Department reported Friday that nonfarm payrolls rose by a mere 18,000 in December 2007, far fewer than economists had expected, and the weakest month-to-month chang
Albany-Landowners offered 30% above appraisals:

About 30 percent extra. That appears to be the final offer for land appropriated to build a public road, replacing the one Albany will soon swallow up.
"They (the landowners) have been offered about 30 percent above the average appraised value of the land," said Christopher Anand, managing partner for the $1.4-billion mixed-use development project. "That's our ceiling.
"We expect final arrangements will be completed by the end of the month, and as soon as this is resolved you will see Albany going full steam ahead."
If Anand's reading of the tea leaves is correct, the last obstacle standing in the way of his development will have been removed. It wouldn't have happened overnight.
This fly has been stuck in the ointment since late last spring when the government decided it would appropriate each of those individual lots, arguing the move in the public
Looks like his win in Iowa answered that electability question. From CNN:MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) — MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) — Two days before New Hampshire's Democratic primary, Sen. Barack Obama has opened a double-digit lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton in that state, a new CNN-WMUR poll found Sunday. Obama, the first-term senator from Illinois who won last week's Iowa caucuses, led the New York senator and former first lady 39 percent to 29 percent in a poll conducted Saturday and Sunday — a sharp change from a poll out Saturday that showed the Democratic front-runners tied at 33 percent. Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina is at 16 percent in the new survey, down four points from Saturday. Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is in fourth place, with the support of 7 percent of likely New Hampshire Democratic primary voters, with Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio at 2 percent.A USA Today poll confirms this but also shows that Huckabee isn't receiving a similar boos
Tibetans-living-in-exile have planned a march from India to Tibet to protest against the Beijing Olympics, which they say is China's propaganda to gain international acceptance to its "illegal" rule in Tibet. Five leading Tibetan organisations today said that hundreds of Tibetans would march from Dharamsala to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, on March 10, the day Tibetans would be observing the 49th anniversary of the failed uprising against Chinese rule. Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsewang Rigzin said the Tibetans must utilise the time over the next eight months to fight "China's massive Olympics propaganda campaign." "We must seize this unprecedented opportunity to have the Tibetan voice of resistance heard loud and clear by the Chinese leadership and the people around the world," said Rigzin. The march organisers have called upon Tibetans worldwide to use peaceful means to protest the Beijing Olympics. Tibetans will engage in non-violent mass protests

Queensland fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz has urged Australia's selectors to opt for pacer Shaun Tait instead of spinner Brad Hogg for the Boxing Day Test. Kasprowicz, who has taken 113 wickets in 38 Tests, said the Indian batsmen simply did not want to face Tait's raw pace. The highly respected Queensland fast bowler said: "I'd go with four quicks. When you are looking for the bowlers who are going to get you 20 wickets ... on a drop-in wicket it doesn't really offer a lot of turn. "Nothing against Brad Hogg or anything, he's a fantastic bowler. I just think the Indian batsmen are seasoned campaigners against spin bowling and what they don't particularly like is fast bowling," The Age quoted Kasprowicz, as saying. A day before the Test gets underway, opinions are divided and MCG curator Tony Ware has suggested Hogg should be included. Hogg has taken nine wickets at 50.22 in an unimpressive four-Test career. But the 36-year-old spinner, who hasn't played a Test since Oct

By Amjad Rafiq. Based upon extracts from the video The TruthThe Islamic Society University of Essex November 1994RELIGION and SCIENCE have always been considered to be twin sisters by Islam and today at a time when science has taken great strides, they still continue to be associated. Furthermore, certain scientific data are used for a better understanding of the Qur’anic text. In a century where, for many, scientific truth has dealt a deathblow to religious belief, it is precisely the discoveries of science that, in an objective examination of the Islamic Revelation, have highlighted the supernatural character of various aspects of the Revelation. After a study which lasted ten years, the famous French physician Maurice Bucaille adressed the French Academy of Medicine in 1976 and expressed the complete agreement of the Qur’an and established findings of modern science. He presented his study on the existence in the Qur’an of certain statements concerning physiology and reproducti

Now that the visitors have headed home and we are getting back into our regular routine it is time to hit the books hard! We have taken a two week break for Thanksgiving and the break is now officially over! Starting tomorrow school is back in full swing!
