  • A tale of a Homeless man, the British Airport Authority PLC, and an ASBO.
There is a story in the newspapers which epitomizes just what a shitty society Britain has become; and how laws brought in to deal with yobbish behavior are being used to the advantage of big business and are being targeted at some of the most vulnerable people.Anthony Delaney, an unemployed chef who has fallen on hard times after loosing his job and home, found himself on the street and started using the facilities at Gatwick airport to wash himself and keep tidy. Out of sheer desperation he eventually ended up living under its roof, rather than face the fear and desolation of sleeping rough on the streets. The Airports owners encouraged the police to take him to court and eventually a court issued an ASBO against him in 2006 which banned Delaney from Gatwick airport and its train station until 2011. Mr Delaney understandably ignored the ASBO, as he was caught between a rock and a hard place, he could go back to living on the streets or ‘illegally’ stay at the airport where at lea
  • Hyderabad airport ready for take-off
Coming in to land for the first time at Hyderabad’s new Rajiv Gandhi airport at Shamsabad, Captain Gandhi, commander of Kingfisher Airlines flight IT 9009, says it is ‘a pilot’s dream’. The airport, located 30 km away from the city centre, has none of the typical obstructions that pilots have to face at other large cities. It is also a contrast to the current airport at Begumpet, which has gained notoriety in the aviation industry for a huge number of bird-hits. Mr Gandhi was conducting the first test flight to the airport to try out the navigation aids, ahead of its inauguration next month. An hour later, the Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Reddy added more gloss to the airport by announcing that he would cut sales tax on aviation fuel from 33% to 4%. The cut in sales tax would make for a substantial saving (Rs 10,000 per kg) for airlines uplifting fuel from the state. Both airlines and aviation minister Praful Patel have been asking states to cut tax rates to help airlines i

I have been to Malaga airport many times as we own an apartment down near Marbella, but I cant for the life of me work out the answer to my question!!Bascially its about car hire. I want to hire a car for me and my g/f for our stay. I will do this the usual way of collecting from downstairs at the airport, and we will get a small car. However, she will then return to the UK after about 2.5 weeks, and then some friends will be joining me. Unfortunately, my friends are rather big chaps, so I will need a bigger car. My question is, if I was to return my first hire car the usual way and then say good bye to my girlfriend, how will I get to the car hire bit downstairs again to get my new car, as I wont have come through the arrivals lounge. I dont fancy the idea of sneaking past the sliding doors where the taxi people wait incase I look a little dodgy! Is there another way of getting there

But in trying to book a car with Europcar via the Easyjet website, it seems to say that pickup and dropoffs are in Algeciras? Am I reading this wrong? In reading the posts in the forums, it seems everyone recommends picking up the car off airport, but I will have my young daughter and mother in law with us, so I don't know how far we'll want to walk. Europcar seems to be the easiest and cheapest, but only if there's transportation to the airport and back. Does anyone know what the best (and least expensive) option is? Singapore: Travellers from India and China boosted passenger traffic at Singapore's Changi Airport to an all-time high of 36.7 million last year, 4.8 percent higher than 2006, the state's civil aviation authority said Monday.Visits by Indians and Chinese increased by 15.6 percent and 12.6 percent from the previous year. Bidding for the new Riviera Maya Airport has not yet been announced, but the project is now considered so certain that it’s regularly listed as one of Mexico’s top infrastructure projects for 2008.Having a shorter commute to your property is hardly the only benefit a new airport may bring. As we've seen in other areas in Mexico, a new airport can drive up real estate values, attract foreign investment, and lead to public and private infrastructure projects. (And, in fact, highway expansion and improvement in the state of Quintana Roo, where the airport will be located, are also high on the list of infrastructure projects for this year.)Newspapers here in the Yucatán say that the preliminary studies for the airport, including market and technical studies, have been submitted

In my own opinion, Russians take their airport security much more serious than they do here in the United States. The trip from the USA to Moscow was long, but smooth. What I thought was good airport security seems a little lacking compared to the Russians though. The return trip home was not as smooth, but nothing too surprising. At the Moscow International airport ? Sheremetyevo ? they have 5 different layers of security we had to go through before getting onto the plane to leave Russia: - Metal detectors/x-ray machines coming into the airport. - Another metal detector/x-ray machine going to the Delta counter to check-in. - Questioning by a Delta representative, then our bags searched. This was done to everyone. - Passport control. - And yet another metal detector/x-ray machine to get into our gate. As well, they searched our carry-on bags here also. The plane left the terminal about 15 minutes late and sat on the runway waiting to take off for another 30 minutes. So we were

  • Bomb Parts Make It Through Airport Screeners...Again
This can be filed under "NOT doing the job you're supposed to do" The report, obtained exclusively by CBS News, details how GAO investigators conducted covert tests at 19 airports earlier this year to test the vulnerabilities of the passenger screening process. The investigators succeeded in passing through TSA checkpoints undetected with components for making improvised explosive devices (IED) and improvised incendiary devices (IID). [...] Investigators identified two devices a terrorist could use to cause such "severe damage." The first was an IED made up of a "liquid explosive and a low yield detonator." The second was an IID "created by combining commonly available products (one of which is a liquid) that TSA prohibits in carry-on luggage." The bomb parts were purchased over the Internet and from a local store for approximately $150, according to the report.

This is friggin' ridiculous. Federal immigration officials announced Thursday they have arrested 10 more workers in an alleged fake ID scam at O'Hare International Airport, raising the total number of defendants to 36. The operation was revealed Wednesday after a team of federal and local law enforcement agents raided several airport warehouses and residences of employees at Ideal Staffing Solutions, a temporary employment agency in Bensenville. Two of those previously arrested were company managers who now face up to 10 years in prison for federal felony charges of harboring illegal immigrants and using phony Social Security numbers. All of the 34 other workers arrested are in the country illegally, officials said. Still unanswered is how the company got access to expired city Aviation Department badges that officials charged were fraudulently used by the workers. Officials said they're also unsure why the deactivated badges allowed the workers to pass through security checkpoint

with fifteen minutes to spare. I love the DFW airport. I think it is one of the easiest and most convenient to navigate and has very few extremely annoying long walks.I'm at the gate waiting to board. Right now I have an aisle seet with no middle person next to me. If it stays that way, it will be a very comfortable flight in comparison to the trip down where I had a middle seat.I'll be back to Minneapolis by 10 a.m. if all goes well, but I'll probably miss the first shuttle and end up in the airport until 1:15.

We've had brunch out this morning and are now at the airport a little over 90 minutes before boarding. Again we've found a nice spot and are thrilled to see that the airport has free wireless internet. My battery has plenty of life. It doesn't get a lot better. In fact, it wouldn't be better UNLESS we were headed away from home instead of towards home. We miss the kids and will be happy to see them, but we return to a world of teens and preteens where there is always stress, always testing, always arguing, always upsetting events. This would be true even if none of them had special needs, but when you add that to it all, it seems that it pushes it to a whole new level. It's interesting though. This morning, post convention, when most people have left and I remain observing others, I have one main theme in my thoughts. Last night, Bart blogged his thoughts about seeing the people around him and I have been since watching the people around me. And I've come to a conclusion.I
  • Nanny at the airport
One of the stranger aspects of us living here is the different way that James & John refer to things. As we’re in France, they aren’t picking up english from kids at school as they’d normally do but rather picking it up from home and the TV. This means that it’s possible for us to pick out where they’ve learnt a word. So, by and large, they “speak cooking” with an Australian accent and they “speak computer” with a Belfast accent. It’s also interesting that whilst both James & John refer to “Granda” and “Nanny here”, James who used to be looked after by my parents has “Granda’s Nanny”, John who was born here has “Nanny at the airport” as that’s usually the last place that he sees her. We think that it was because Wendy was looking after James a lot more when he was younger than I was that he has developed a largely Australian accent but with us both being aroun
  • Gatwick airport - where to stay & where to park while you’re away
Gatwick airport used to be one of our most used airports with the vast range of fairly cheap flights all over the world vs the more expensive ones departing from Heathrow. That’s changed with the short-haul cheapies being taken up by the likes of Ryanair but, of course, you still get loads of choice from Gatwick and, more to the point, arrive in sensible airports. Anyway, that means that there is still considerable interest in the airport and if you’re leaving there chances are you’ll be looking for somewhere to stay as, of course, flight arrival and departure times are rarely great. If you’re driving there, Gatwick parking is best arranged in advance as the range of options is quite bewildering. The best bet is usually to book a package of hotel plus parking which is often considerably cheaper than booking both separately. Anyway, Cheap Parking has gathered together a fairly comprehensive set of information about the airport containing everything from driving d
