Watching the strategies of the top players in the digital SLR market is like watching a game of chess with three sides, and the recent spate of product launches has shown some very interesting moves. Canon, the global market leaders, has a comprehensive range covering the market with the entry-level 10-megapixel EOS 400D, the newly-announced 12.2MP EOS 450D and the semi-pro 10.1MP EOS 40D, as well as three full-frame professional cameras, the aging 12.8MP EOS 5D and the two EOS-1D MkIII variants, the 21MP EOS-1Ds and the high speed 10.1MP EOS-1D. Canon's main rival is of course Nikon, which has three consumer-level DSLRs including the 6MP D40, the new 10.1MP D60 and the D80, also 10.1MP. Sony Alpha 200 - first impressions.The Sony Alpha 200 is very similar to the Sony Alpha 700 when it comes to the body. Naturally, some knobs and dials were removed from the camera to make it less intimidating to beginners, but the ergonomics don't really suffer for it, and in addition, the camera still has all the nice features the Alpha 100 had, and adds a few that were exclusive to the Alpha 700.To be brief - Sony have just made another giant stride forward by making this camera appeal to all those first-time photographers who are familiar with the Sony brand. After a year-long stint as the company’s debut DSLR, the A100 finally has a successor. It isn’t much different, though: Sony markets it as "faster, lighter, and easier to use," according to their January 6 press release. The Sony ? Today at CES amongst OLED TVs, the Mylo handheld and Rolly robotic music companion, Sony announced the third Alpha DSLR, the A200 - and we were there to try it out! The A200 is like a compact version of the A100. It's smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with a slightly bigger 2.7in 230k screen, but the same 10.2 Mpixel CCD sensor. The AF system remains 9-point, but the speed is noticeably quicker and it's a little quieter too. The Alpha A200 should be on sale in February for $699 USD in a kit with the DT 18-70mm lens. At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas NV, Sony introduced the successor to its Alpha 100 digital SLR. The Alpha 200 has a more compact body and a slightly larger 2.7-inch LCD, new firmware, and a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 3200 instead of the Alpha 100’s ISO 1600. Sony also says it offers improved optical image stabilization algorithms, an autofocus speed that is 1.7 times faster than the Alpha 100’s, improved image-noise control, and a quieter shutter. The new camera’s battery system provides a percentage-remaining readout as well. The digital SLR market is dominated by Canon, with a share of around 47 percent for its eight-model range. In second place is Nikon, who's seven models have around 33 percent of the market. In third place is Sony, with a market share of roughly 6.2 percent. That may not sound like much in numbers, but it has achieved this in just a year and a half and with only one model, the amazingly successful Alpha A100 digital SLR. At the launch event for that camera, a Sony representative stated the company's intention to shoulder its way into the market and challenge the long-established leaders, and like most of the other journalists present I was somewhat sceptical, however I will gladly admit that I was wrong to doubt. The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features.The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The new Sony Alpha A700 was launched during a Sony press conference in Italy. Unfortunately, the surprise element was lost because one day earlier the Alpha introduction was disturbed by a leak caused by Sony. The Sony Alpha 700 is Sony?s second digital SLR camera that has to contribute to a continuously compiling series of SLR cameras, with which Sony manifests itself as renowned DSLR manufacturer. The Sony Alpha DSLR A700 is a digital SLR camera which is positioned in the middle segment, and with that, has to compete (heavily) with the new collection of Canon and Nikon D-SLR cameras, among others.
