  • France may have been an Amazon type jungle 55 million years ago
A new analysis of amber fossils collected in France by biologists has led to the speculation that the country might once have been a Amazon-like jungle.   According to a report in Live Science, the 55-milllion-year-old pieces of amber (fossilized tree sap) were found near the Oise River in northern France.   The researchers stated that the amber likely dripped from a similar tree that once covered France millions of years before the continents drifted into their current positions.   What led the researchers to theorize that France was once an Amazon-like dense tropical rainforest, is the discovery of a new organic compund in amber called “quesnoin”.   Because the precursor of this organic compound exists only in sap produced by a tree currently growing only in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, scientists came up with the obvious assumption.   “The region corresponding to modern France could have been found in a geographically critical marshy
  • Questville: Amazon's Askville Gets MMO Facelift - SendMeRSS
Questville: Amazon's Askville Gets MMO Facelift Destined for a late-2008 release, Amazon.com's Questville intends to add the addictive reward system found in most MMO titles to the company's Askville service. Askville is a web-based system that gives users the chance to posit questions to large groups of Internet users, who then attempt to provide useful information to the user. With the upgrade to Questville, useful answers will earn "players" virtual gold and experience. This experience will go toward granting participants higher levels, and according to the Questville FAQ, while the gold is only used to determine status at the moment, Amazon has plans to allow players to use their gold for "special limited time redemption offers."The idea is obviously fueled by the ridiculous success of MMO gaming and its addictive qualities. While many people claim to enjoy the games based on their socializing potential, no MMO gamer will deny the addictive qualities of their simpl

  • Amazon MP3 Store: Potential Apple iTunes Destroyer?
Only 3 months after its launch, Amazon.com’s new MP3 Store is already the 3rd largest digital retailer in the U.S., right under iTunes (#1) and Emusic (#2). This rank is an incredible achievement, but may leave some wondering what all the buzz about and how Amazon has achieved such quick success. Here’s a simple break down of why buyers are loving Amazon MP3 Store and why Amazon poses as a huge competitive threat to the top dog of the digital download industry. Catalogs and Price Amazon MP3 Store features over 2 million songs with catalogs from major labels such as Universal and EMI, along with over 200,000 independent labels. The mp3 tracks are high-quality, encoded at 256 kbps DRM-free and sold for as little as 89 cents, or less if if they are offering specials or free downloads. In comparison iTunes has triple Amazon’s music stock, offering 6 million songs. However, their tracks are lower-quality at 128 kbps in AAC format priced 99 cents Fairplay DRM and, a smaller

  • Amazon's Kindle
Amazon's Kindle e-book reader is the latest one entering E-book world of reading devices. So far reader interest has not picked up for these products, in spite of products like Sony PRS 505 Reader, Bookeen Cybook V3 and the iRex Iliad, which are available in the market for sometime. I for myself love Sony Reader. It looks like Kindle my not re-kindle buyer interest in portable reading devices. When you compare it with the features of Sony Reader, the new Amazon Kindle looks like a poor attempt to better this product. The Sony allows you to read virtually any format. It may not have the huge commercial titles selection that the Amazon gadget has, but you can read any PDF, TXT, RTF, DOCs, Blogs and RSS for free and right away. It also fails in looks, appeal and price when compared with Sony reader. It is on sale for $399 on Amazon.com and comes with some free reference books preloaded. You may also get subscriptions to news feeds from newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, Le Monde
  • Kindling enthusiasm: the Amazon reader
Walt at Random is known for its incisive comment - today's post, Food pills and the Kindle, notes that while thankful for many things, I’m also thankful that I’m not really writing about ebooks and ebook devices these days. ‘Cause then, you know, I’d probably want to write something about the Kindle (do you really need a link?). and then enjoys himself commenting on the commenting on the Kindle! Meanwhile, if:book in of razors and blades, also borrows from others (as do I... and as will we all in the UK, if the Kindle doesn't get here soon!). There is concern in some quarters that Amazon haven't gone down the standards route and embraced .epub [the International Digital Publishing Forum's new standard format] -but why should they? It is a standard in name only and Amazon surely don't need its imprimatur with c.90,000 titles already available.TeleRead: Bring the E-Books Home has excerpts from some of the many US Kindle owner’s reports - naturally there are happy owners an

  • Amazon's Kindle: Great Invention of Waste of Money?
It's all over the net here, here, and here, and everywhere else. Amazon has released probably the only e-reader that has the potential to take off. While I am very interested in this product, I can tell you now that I'll never buy it. We'll get to that in a minute.    Now, the Kindle is a rather remarkable little tool. It's better than some of the other readers because it looks easier to navigate, is not too complicated, and has a lot of features. I'm not going to get into the details of what it can do. If you want details read the links that I've given. If any reader to date has the potential to make e-reading a market-holding fad, it's the Kindle. But, like Sony's reader, this too has a high likelihood to flop.    Why? Because it's $399 USD. That's 193 British Pounds, 270 Euros, or 393 Canadian...err bills (sorry, I don't know exactly what you guys call it over there). The Kindle is currently only available in

  • Amazon MP3s
Amazon has started selling DRM-free MP3s. They are encoded at 256 kb and sell for 89 to 99 cents each. Does this pose a threat to iTunes? Well the convience is lacking at Amazon. At iTunes you get seamless throughput from iTunes to your computer to your iPod. At Amazon each of those steps requires something on my part. A little bit better skill set.The other part is the catalog. No Beatles, almost no U2. They do have the Frank Sinatra With Bono song. Only one song by the Corrs. A good selection of Pentangle. I'll give it a try, but with the limited catalog and being less convient, I don't see this as an iTunes killer.

It's been rumoured, it's been predicted, and now: it's live. Amazon have put their US downloads store onto the internet, with something under a fanfare - you wouldn't know it was there from the front page. The Amazon blog explains the pricing structure:We've got over 2 million songs by more than 180,000 artists from over 20,000 major and independent labels, so there's plenty of great music to discover. Since our top 100 albums are priced at $8.99 and our top 100 songs are priced at 89 cents (unless marked otherwise, like, say, it's a double album or something like that), you can score high-quality mp3s from artists like Kanye West, KT Tunstall and Spoon at low prices. You'll find more than just the bestsellers at those prices, though. More than 1 million of our 2 million songs are priced at 89 cents and most albums are priced from $5.99 to $9.99. We're bringing great selection and great prices to digital music. We say explains; we didn't say it explains it well. Smells Like Teen Spirit ca
