  • Live A Life That Matters (from an unknown author)
Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours, or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.Your wealth, fame, and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end.It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliantEven your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned,

Ok, I'm digging the new site I just found: FicletWhat Are ficlets?A ficlet is a short story that enables you to collaborate with the world.Once you’ve written and shared your ficlet, any other user can pick up the narrative thread by adding a prequel or sequel. In this manner, you may know where the story begins, but you’ll never guess where (or even if!) it ends.Check out my first attempt. Beware, I've read a lot of Stephen King...UPDATE (01/31/08): I've written a second one: http://ficlets.com/stories/19745. Short stories are fun when you have a limit of 1024 words!

  • Englewood Author’s Novel Inspired by Colorado Castle Owner
A Scottish castle brimming with European antiques is not what you would expect to see in Northern Douglas County. Nor would you expect to run into over 3,000 acres of pristine undeveloped land just east of Castle Pines Village. Even odder, this castle and the land was owned and governed by a Southern belle who raised cattle.Colorado's beauty and sunny days attract all sorts of people with interesting pasts and Tweet Kimble brought her life steeped in European culture to our Rocky Mountain State.Englewood author Corinne Joy Brown was one of the last writers to interview Tweet before she died in 1999. Tweet's character was so strong and so fascinating to Corinne that Tweet served as the inspiration for her historic novel "MacGregor's Lantern." The castle Tweet owned was modeled after Scottish castles. During the research for Corinne's book, Corinne discovered that the Scots dominated in the ranching industry in Colorado and Wyoming. It may have been this influence that encouraged the cas
  • News : Golden Compass author hits back (Thursday, 29 November 2007)
Thursday, 29 November 2007The author of the book on which the new film The Golden Compass is based has hit back at critics who accuse him of peddling "candy-coated atheism". Phillip Pullman won the Whitbread prize for the third part of his trilogy Philip Pullman dismissed as "absolute rubbish" accusations by the US-based Catholic League that the film promotes atheism and denigrates Christianity. "I am a story teller," he said. "If I wanted to send a message I would have written a sermon." The Golden Compass - which stars Nicole Kidman - premiered in London on Tuesday. Epic battle The film also stars James Bond actor Daniel Craig and is based on the first part of Mr Pullman's best-selling His Dark Materials children's trilogy. In the book - set in an imaginary world - the heroine Lyra fights against the Magisterium, an evil organisation some have interpreted as based on the Catholic Church. The three-part series c

  • Author Donates Royalties to Stop Dam Building
India has undergone many dam projects as have many other developing countries. Foreign investment, flood control, irrigation canals, and energy production are the cited reasons for dam construction but critics claim that the devastation to the human population living in the flood zones and the ecological damage, as well as statistics stating historical dam projects provide significantly less energy output as expected, encourage extreme resistance to dam construction. In India, massive protests in the form of hunger strikes, and donations of book royalties from famous Indian writer Arundhati Roy* keep this debate in the news.Book Review: "Power Politics", 2001, author Arundhati Roy, Indian female writer (also author of famous novel "The God of Small Things"This book is a series of essays exploring water dam building and energy production in India, political response to September 11, 2001 in expectation of a U.S. war with Afghanistan, and free speech. One essay from the book is called "The

  • NEWSWEEK: 'The Kite Runner' Author Khaled Hosseini Urges United States and Allies: Don't Give up on Afghanistan
War Torn Country is Improving but Would be 'Doomed' Without CommitmentIn an exclusive essay in the December 10 issue (on newsstands Monday, December 3), best-selling author Khaled Hosseini writes that despite Afghanistan's raging Taliban insurgency, governmental corruption, rampant poverty and persistent oppression of women, there are signs of positive developments. Still, the only certain thing about Afghanistan, he writes, is that "without a genuine and sustained long-term commitment on the part of the United States and its allies, Afghanistan is doomed."As a good-will envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Hosseini, who traveled to Afghanistan in September, compares the country today to how he last remembered it in 2003. "When I visited Kabul in 2003, it looked like a war zone, a grim landscape of jagged debris, flattened buildings and roofless walls. The Kabul I saw in September is dramatically improved," he writes. "Many of its neighborhoods have been rebuilt.

  • it says more about the author than the music
A frequent response to negative criticism, but one I don't really understand."They played a blues in F. Then a variation on rhythm changes clever enough to prove there's still life in that old method." "XYZ is possessed of a fine technique, but thanks to an unforced modesty, it never eclipses melody and feeling." Do these sentences tell us more about the player or the listener?I can't tell you much about music, but I can tell you about myself. In fact, I think music is fairly rarely talked about - see any feature-length article on a musician in, say, the NY Times. If music is not fully contained in either its technique, its context, its consumers or producers, is it possible to talk about it, or only around it? Obviously, if music's artistic space could be fully duplicated (in words, painting, film, etc.), it wouldn't have much reason to exist.
  • Article : Golden Compass Author Doesn't Care for Narnia, Lord of the Rings
It won't reach theaters until December 7, but The Golden Compass -- which adapts the first installment in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy -- already has some people up in arms, and the author doesn't seem to mind one bit.Of course, Pullman is no stranger to controversy; his books have long been targeted as anti-Catholic by various media watchdog groups, and even though Compass director Chris Weitz took pains to whitewash the story's more overtly religious themes for the film, that hasn't prevented boycott threats from the Catholic league.Pullman made an appearance in New York last week, and MTV Movies was on hand to get his answers to questions about His Dark Materials and The Golden Compass. He didn't pull any punches in his responses:Pullman [described] how he finds the "Lord of the Rings" books trivial in their lack of asking big questions and doesn't find C.S. Lewis' answers to the big questions in the "Narnia" books satisfying.Daring to express a public opinion about

  • Interview with Laurent Murawiec, author of "Pandora’s Boxes, The Mind of Jihad"
There’s one thing that uniquely differentiates the modern jihadi movement from all others: it is the bloodlust. The al-Qaida training manual speaks of killing enemies like of a “slaughter” an animal sacrifice to Allah: it is human sacrifice. That’s what Mohammad Atta says in his last text. The jihadi practice is a return of human sacrifice in the 21st century. We find an idolization of blood, of savagery, a cult of killing, of death. Gruesome murder is lionized and proffered as model, as pleasing to Allah, as opening the gates of Paradise for the “martyrs.” The highest religious authorities sanction it, governments condone it, approve of it, the media enthusiastically endorse it. Think of the notorious “Waiting Room of Paradise” at the Martyrs’ Cemetery of Tehran where a 14-feet high fountain of blood-like red liquid symbolizes the essence of Islam’s message, the guide says!More...

  • Belated Birthday Wish to Janet Frame, A New Zealand Author
Celebrating the Birthday of Janet FrameAugust 28, 1924 – January 29, 2004Poet, Novelist – New ZealandOne of the exciting benefits about film is that you encounter people you may never otherwise encounter. I rented a film, An Angel at My Table, by director Jane Campion. You may recognize Jane’s name as the director of The Piano starring Holly Hunter and Sam Neill. As a film, An Angel at My Table was unusual. It isn't a film that I see would have wide appeal, nor would I recommend it universally but there are people who would find it very interesting. The characters are strongly portrayed but the pace is a little slow. It did; however, give me an introduction to a woman in history of whom I hadn't yet encountered. It features the life of Janet Frame, a poet and novelist from New Zealand. Janet grew up with three sisters and a brother but it seems that she was a very shy person and had a lot of trouble connecting with people. Her social struggles led to her admitting herself i

  • Author John Major Jenkins Comments and Provides Insights on The Mayan Calendar and 2012
I wrote recently about two books I’d read on the subject of 2012 and the Mayan calendar, in a blog titled “The Mayan Calendar and 2012.” The books I discussed were Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End-Date, by John Major Jenkins (Introduction by Terence McKenna); and How To Practice Mayan Astrology: The Tzolkin Calendar and Your Life Path, by Bruce Scofield and Barry Orr. I mentioned in my blog that the Mayan calendar and the galactic cosmology of the Mayans were new topics to me and I was approaching my discussion of both books with the hope that I would not mis-represent or mis-interpret the authors.John Major Jenkins responded to my blog with some very helpful comments, which are posted with the original blog. However, I would also like to post his comments here. I really valued Mr. Jenkins’ patient explanations and willingness to add clarity to a subject that has caught the attention of many people as we look ahead to 2012. After reading Mr. Jen

Lamb, the deputy Public Affairs Officer for Multi National Division-Baghdad: An investigation has been completed and the allegations made by PVT Beauchamp were found to be false. His platoon and company were interviewed and no one could substantiate the claims.According to the military source, Beauchamp's recantation was volunteered on the first day of the Military's investigation. • When SI.com prints your email, can you consider yourself a published author?
Just to toot my own horn somewhat, the short letter I sent in response to Michael Silver's NFL owner rankings was published as part of his follow up column. Hey, at least I made the top of page 4.Silver's column inspired my own post about Ford's ineptitude on 7/2. I boiled my post down to a pithy, 6 sentence, note to Silver. Surprisingly, he thought enough of my calling him "Nuts" to print it.Here's my 10 seconds of online stardom..."William Clay Ford isn't the worst owner in the NFL? With all due respect, I have to ask, are you nuts? Ford is the worst owner in NFL history. This says it all about the Ford era. The Detroit Lions have won just 1, count 'em, 1, playoff game since WCF became the sole owner of the Lions in 1964. The only thing Ford has brought to the Detroit fan base is pain."-- Al Beaton from Detroit Hmmm. Maybe those 'Fire Millen' signs were directed at the wrong honcho.

  • More Q & A With Kari Grady Grossman, Author of "Bones that Float: A Story of Adopting Cambodia"
Today I conclude my two-part interview with Kari Grady Grossman, author of Bones That Float, A Story of Adopting Cambodia. Laura Christianson: What was the most important thing you learned about yourself during the process of writing Bones that Float? Kari Grady Grossman: Writing a book is really hard work. The hardest part was digging into my own story and grappling with the guilt that tough questions raise and learning to forgive myself, the system, and the world for its wrong. It strengthened my faith in God. I feel I’ve been graced with the understanding that there is a larger, sacred and evolutionary point to all of this cultural interconnectedness that international adoption brings. That’s what I tried to communicate through Cambodia’s story: Love, Forgiveness and Compassion for a tragic past, a flawed adoption system, and hope for a better future.  LC: When people adopt transculturally, they become a transcultural family. What has it been like for you to “adopt
  • Interview with Kari Grady Grossman, author of "Bones that Float"
In the previous post, I reviewed Bones That Float, A Story of Adopting Cambodia. Today and tomorrow, I'm chatting with author, Kari Grady Grossman. Laura Christianson: Bones that Float is an intriguing title. What is the significance of that phrase? Kari Grady Grossman: “Bones That Float” is the English interpretation of the Cambodian phrase chung un deit; it has a meaning similar to good karma. Bones that float are good luck, they can rise above suffering and float away.  My son’s birthmother described him as having bones that float in a letter to us. LC: Your book reads like a novel. How did you incorporate your skills as a documentary producer into writing the book? KGG: As a longtime photographer and video producer, I have a visual sense of how a story should look and I try to paint that picture with words.  I often close my eyes and put myself in the scene I’m writing about: what does it look like? what does it smell like?  how does that relate to how
  • e-Books: an author's view
For a change - instead of looking at e-books in libraries or e-book readers - here is a view of e-books from an author's - well, several authors'... actually several science fiction authors' points of view.An interesting view point... Which presents a few hard truths that both publishers and authors might need to face, if the format is going to be a long-term success. e-Books have a limited audience; small sales and limited exposure (or even availability); they suffer from a lack of professional credit; there is certainly a lack of marketing; and e-book publishers apparently do not pay advances. Other issues (there are more?): the ebook audience is self-selecting, and not representative of the general book-reading public. Brisk sales in the electronic marketplace won't necessarily translate into print popularity. Also, many commercial publishers want to purchase electronic rights as part of a total package. If your electronic rights are tied up with an epublisher, it may make your
