  • Bird flu strikes again in northern Thailand
BANGKOK (Reuters) - The H5N1 bird flu virus has re-emerged in a northern Thai province for the first time since March last year, forcing the slaughter of 10,000 chickens, an Agriculture Ministry official said on Thursday. The outbreak occurred on a farm in Nakhon Sawan, 240 km north of Bangkok, where the owner reported 4,085 chickens had died earlier this month, senior Livestock Department official Nirundorn Aungtragoolsuk told Reuters. "The H5N1 virus was found on the farm and we have culled the rest of them," he said of the birds slaughtered in one of four closed chicken houses on the farm. The others house 45,000 chickens which had shown no signs of the deadly avian influenza virus, he said. The virus last reappeared in northern Thailand in March 2007, but there have been no new reports of human infections in the country, where the virus has killed 17 people since 2003. Of the 351 human cases recorded since H5N1 re-emerged in Asia in 2003 and spread to parts of Af
  • Turkey culls poultry to stop spread of bird flu
ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish authorities culled nearly 600 poultry in villages near the Black Sea coast on Wednesday after an outbreak of bird flu was reported there. The Agriculture Ministry said checkpoints had been set up at the entrance to the villages and six culling centres had been built in Zonguldak province, where authorities identified the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain in chickens on Tuesday. "Culling work has been completed. A total of 570 chickens, 14 ducks and two geese have been culled and buried," the ministry said in a statement. There are no reports of new cases, it said, adding that it believed the virus had spread to the poultry from wild ducks. Turkey lies on the migratory route for wild birds flying south from Scandinavia and Siberia to north Africa for winter. Four people died from bird flu in eastern Turkey in 2006 after they came into contact with sick birds. Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate i
  • WHO launches system to track bird flu samples
By Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation says it has begun to disclose how and where the samples of bird flu virus it receives from affected countries are used, in response to poor countries' demands for more transparency. The electronic tracking system, which went live this week, is a step towards appeasing the concerns of Indonesia and other developing countries that the biological specimens they share with the WHO will be used to make affordable vaccines. "The system is fully operational and can be downloaded. It is one important measure that was called for and has been taken," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told Reuters on Wednesday. The newly-public information includes listing of the samples received, the laboratory handling them, analyses carried out and their possible use as vaccines for fighting a flu pandemic. China, Iraq, Nigeria, Vietnam and other countries that have had human cases of bird flu have sent nearly 9,000 specimens fr
  • Small bird flocks pose bird flu risk for humans
By Jeremy Smith BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Europe must stay alert to the risk of bird flu affecting humans and focus on small flocks kept by amateurs and small breeders as the main danger, a senior scientist said on Wednesday. So far, the nearest that human cases of bird flu have come to the European Union is Turkey and Egypt, where four people died from the disease as recently as last month. "The main risk we see in the European Union is not the big chicken barns because they are usually inside and surveillance is good," said Johan Giesecke, chief scientist at the Sweden-based European Centre of Disease Prevention and Control. "It's the hobby flocks -- that's the main risk and where we fear that infection of the birds may spread to humans," he said. "Hobby flocks" is the term given to small collections of birds, usually fewer than 200, such as pigeons, chickens or turkeys. They usually roam freely, often in backyards, and so can mix quite easily wit
  • AiG’s Bird-Brained Idiocy
It is very foolish to rely on the Bible for answers to everything the book is entirely neutral of concerning science, computers, chemistry, space aliens, UFOs, life on other planets, evolution, and especially dinosaurs. Biblical literalists, including young earth creationists like David Menton, however, don't know better. Always when it comes to science and dinosaurs do creationists claimed the bible for answers to, yet there's none found in there. But that doesn't stop them from distorting the bible to make it as if it does have all the answers to everything concerning dinosaurs, science, chemistry, and evolution while ignoring the fact that the bible never said anything about them to begin with. The latest in Menton's dino-size toiletry involve his reaction to the concept of dinosaurs evolving into birds and his efforts to discredit them by misrepresenting Alan Feduccia, a dino-bird critic who believes that birds evolve from a reptilian ancestor outside Dinosauria, and by inducing fa
  • Bird flu scare in New Delhi hits poultry sales
The bird flu scare has hit poultry sales here. Traders claimed that the scare of bird flu has resulted in a drop in sales of chicken. "I buy chicken from here and supply them to the hotels in the city. Due to this bird flu scare, my business is suffering losses. The rates have also come down drastically these days," said Mohammad Arshad, a supplier of chickens. Though many claimed that the bird flu scare is the obvious reason behind the drop in the sales, few feel that it is the ignorance of people. Mohammad Irfan Quereshi, a dealer said that it is the economics of demand and supply playing its game. He said that farmers sold out their chicken at lower prices fearing that their chicken will not fetch them a good price if a nation-wide epidemic is declared. "The main reason for the fall in the prices is the fact that the scared farmers sold their chickens before a bird flu epidemic could be declared. The farmers got scared with the media showing this bird flu all over. I

  • China successfully concludes bird flu virus’ phase II trials
Chinese researchers have successfully concluded the second phase of tests with a human vaccine against the deadly bird flu virus, with results showing it to be safe and effective.   An official involved in the trials has revealed that about 400 people aged between 18 and 60 were administered the vaccine between September and November.   The drug is said to have performed well on the subjects, without causing any side effects.   "China is capable of producing bird flu vaccines for humans in appropriate quantities," the China Daily quoted Zhang Jiansan, the vice general manager of Beijing-based vaccine producer Sinovac Biotech, as telling Xinhua.   The World Health Organisation has hailed the progress made by Chinese researchers.   "Around a year ago China announced the first phase of clinical tests for a human vaccine," a Beijing-based WHO spokeswoman said in an e-mail.   "It's encouraging that China is making progress but WHO n

In case you didn't know, seagulls poop the messiest...Unless you count ostriches with diarrhea.Well as they passed over I was bombarded with bird poo!! Three hit my face, five splattered in my food, and lots more landed on or around me. This was a very emotional time for me.For those of you who didn't know, bird poop looks like this. Of course, now image it times three and on my face!Alas, that wasn't the end of my experience. While I was pulling out my shotgun from my pocket (My pants aren't big, I just have a big pocket!) all the trees in my vicinity fell on me.It was a very windy day. I didn't, because of the time crunch. I had to turn that aspect of this disc over to someone else and let them drive it. I did give them a lot of notes. I think the package looks great, though. It is really amazing. The richness of the detail, and the color of the image are great. I can't think of another way to perfectly preserve your film.
