  • Blu-Ray - the champion of the three-year format war
Toshiba said that it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, handing a victory to rival, leaving Sony’s Blu-ray as the champion of the three-year format war. (enterprisepost fresh news)...
  • HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD
We all knew knew that this was going to happen and Sony won the format war. Toshiba threw in the towel and took HD-DVD off the market today as reported by most major news. The format war, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s and then Sony's venture into the Mini-Disc products. I found them to be excellent but the support for them did not happen when the MP3 revolution took the public by storm.Hollywood studios had initially split their alliances between the two camps, meaning only certain films would play on any one DVD machine and that hurt both of the companies in the beginning. In addition to Wal-Mart, consumer electronics chain Best Buy and online video rental company Netflix Inc also recently signed up to the Blu-ray camp. What is your opinion?Blogroll Me!Subscribe to my Posts...
Ambos, se pondrán a la venta en el mes de Abril, a un precio de 462 USD (214.500 CLP | 316,7 € | 4.960 MXN).Nokia has released a short video showing a new concept from our design team exploring how recycled materials could be used to make mobiles in the future. The idea behind the “remade” concept was to see if it was possible to create a device made from nothing new. It has been designed using recycled materials that avoid the need for natural resources, reduce landfill, and allow

HD DVD camp responds to Blu-ray progressFiled under: Blu-ray HD DVD is officially against the ropes and is getting battered by wicked left and right hooks to the noggin by Blu-ray. But unlike a punch drunk boxer giving it one last shot at the win, it appears that the HD DVD camp is slowly coming to grips with its grim future. The camp responded to earlier reports that Netflix would only carry Blu-ray titles as well as Best Buy recommending Blu-ray as the HD standard. "We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward," the statement read. "While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."Sure, they're not exactly admitting defeat yet, but it's almost sad to see the HD DVD camp attem
  • Now it really looks like Blu-Ray won

  • Warner drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray only - SendMeRSS
Warner drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray onlyFiled under: NewsThe question we find ourselves asking is "what does Michael Bay think?" Warner Bros. Entertainment today announced that the company will discontinue releasing its movies on HD DVD beginning in May of this year in favor of Blu-Ray exclusivity. The decision comes as Warner Bros. CEO Bary Meyer airs concerns that "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger." In other words, if one format doesn't win out soon, a newer format could dominate them both. Digital downloads, perhaps? Maybe Michael Bay was right after all. Whatever your position in the format war (we're happy with our DVDs, thanks), this represents a big blow to HD DVD, and rumor has it that Warner Bros. received a hefty chunk of change in exchange for Blu-Ray exclusivity. So, starting this summer, your 360 HD DVD player might be feeling a bit lonely (except for the fine films from Paramount and Dreamworks, of
  • Panasonic Announces World's Thinnest Internal Blu-ray Drive
Panasonic has announced their development of the world's thinnest internal Blu-ray drive. At just 9.5 mm tall, it's thin enough for laptops but still packs a performance punch. We're talking 2X recording for both BD-R and BD-RE (rewritable) discs, along with BD-R DL support (but we're guessing that the dual layer writing is just 1X...have fun burning those 50GB discs). The drive also supports DVDs with 8x burning on all types of discs. It's priceless for now with Panasonic only shipping units to manufacturers at the moment, but we'll get more details soon when it's on display at CES. And here is the rest of it.

  • Blu-ray Discs Outselling HD DVD
The story so far: HD DVD format was launched by Toshiba in Japan on 31st March 2006. The first Samsung Blu-ray players went on sale in the US on 25th June 2006. Sony's PlayStation 3 Console with built-in Blu-ray player launched in Japan on 10th November 2006. Microsoft's HD DVD Player for XBOX 360 was released at the beginning of December 2006...October 2007: Home Media Research released a report stating Blu-ray Disc movies have outsold rival HD DVD movie titles by an almost 2:1 ratio in the United States so far this year. While HD DVD player owners buy more movies, there are now 2.7 million US homes with a Blu-ray player (includes PlayStation 3 Console owners) compared to only 750,000 with HD DVD playersToday, the Blu-ray Disc Association issued a statement that Blu-ray movie sales have now exceeded a million in Europe & Blu-ray currently represents 73% of high-definition movie sales. In Europe, over 20 million Blu-ray Disc games for the PlayStation 3 Console have also been produc

  • Hitachi working on 100GB Blu-ray discs
Just when you thought 50GB of data storage was enough, Hitachi has to waltz in and offer double that amount with a new prototype four layer Blu-ray disc.Normally, you'd need a different optical head to read from a disc of this type, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one. That is, if need be, Hitachi says it will play in regular Blu-ray drives that exist now (which includes our lovely PS3).Well, there is a catch. All Blu-ray players would have to have their optical heads tweaked a little bit, but it's something that can be worked out in a firmware update. No word on a release for the discs, but as soon as they finish stabilizing the signal quality, we'll hear an announcement of some kind.Source: PS3 Fanboy Online Games Blu-ray Hitachi PS3 firmware Disc
  • Hands On With Cars Blu-Ray
DailyGame.net has had hands on with the upcoming release of Cars on Blu-Ray at Disney's Magical Blu-Ray Tour. Concerning the "Car Finder" special feature, DG.net says this... The movie's Car Finder BD-J interactive feature is intuitive enough for the most novice BD consumer yet robust enough to make seasoned Blu-ray fans feel like they're getting a worthy bonus. In essence, Car Finder is an interactive "Where's Waldo?" game in which viewers watch the entire movie in an interface that shows a variety of cars and landmarks to look for. This interface is subtle enough to not interfere with the movie itself, but it's large enough to keep viewers from forgetting they're supposed to be playing the BD-J "game." This edition is due out in the US on November 6. Is the tour coming to your city? If so, are you going to check it out and play with the Cars BD? Leave a comment below and let us know!
  • Pre-Order Ratatouille on DVD/Blu-Ray
Upcoming Pixar reader, Peter, kindly points out that Ratatouille is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com.  You can purchase it on DVD for $15.99 USD saving 47% on the SRP. Or you can buy it on Blu-Ray for $23.95 USD saving 32% on the SRP. I'm still not fond of the cover. Disney seem to like putting the logo right in the middle of the cover. And I wish Disney would bite the bullet and make both versions (Blu-Ray and DVD) almost equal, because I know I like many others can't afford Blu-Ray yet. A Blu-Ray disc is usually $12AUD more than the DVD version. Don't get me started on the cost of the player. I'm tired of these one disc releases. I still haven't bought Cars because it's one disc. Are you going to buy the Ratatouille DVD?
  • Nemo Swims to Blu-Ray, Fall '08
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced via BusinessWire a whole slew of Disney Blu-Ray releases for 2008. Among these titles is Finding Nemo, which in it's glossy new Blu-Ray form, will swim to shelves in the fall of 2008 (September-November). In addition, the Studio will bring two of its treasured family classics to Blu-ray Disc, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, both of which will feature full motion picture-in-picture bonus features. says the PR. This is a good enough reason for me to save up for a HDTV and a Blu-Ray player before Christmas next year. Nemo, in my humble opinion, shall look absolutely georgous on a HDTV in glorious HD. No word yet on other special features yet however, except for the picture-in-picture feature. Disney do tend to release Pixar films on DVD/Blu-Ray in November now, so my guess is an early November release date, along with WALL-E on a skimpy DVD release and a packed Blu-Ray relea
  • Blu Ray does Porn
In what is sure to advance the adoption of the Blu-Ray format, Japanese porn resellers have found a maker in Taiwan that is willing to press Blu-Ray format disks, and ship the goods back to Japan for sale in Japanese Shops. While in other countries, porn has advanced the adoption of HD-DVD. “In Japan, there are some problems. Companies cannot press Blu-ray discs because they cannot touch adult-related contracts,” Kiyotaka Konno, director of administration at Assist, a Japanese company that authors and replicates DVDs for the adult industry in Japan, told IDG News. “So we asked some makers in Taiwan to do the work, and then we import the discs back to Japan. The Taiwanese company was able to obtain a pressing machine from Sony and will start mass production in August.” Source: VUNet While the loophole exists, and the format “wars” continue on, most people believe that it was porn that drove the adoption of VHS over Beta Max for the same reason.
