It seems like many of us are attracted to boats at the sad ends of their lives. Wrecks, abandoned hulls, whatever. Urban exploration has grown more popular, or at least with the Internet its easier to share these intrepid adventurers' travels. This photo collection is a great set of pictures of a bunch of early 20th century boats that are way past their glory days.

through the rusted hulks of these ships was a pretty incredible
experience! The weather was great and the water was calm (although a
little stinky, there is a lot of polluted muck in the harbor). I have
seen this place from the shore once before, and it is nothing compared
to being right in there... the ships themselves are in terrible shape
structurally, but I would've liked to climb around a lot more if I had
more time over there!
This was another nice break from the hospitals, and completely
different... I like how these photos came out and enjoyed taking them.
Just a really nice picture... click for other sizes, etc.Make sure and check out acampm1's other photos... some really nice stuff! Lots of boats and seashore work
Gavin Atkin over at InTheBoatShed.net has an interesting post on the Hudson folding boat. A folding dinghy from the 1930's, it kind of shows that the various folding and Origami Dinghy designs aren't as newfangled as we might think.

We've had some bicycle notes before... an electric bike, and some other good folding bike links. The bicycle is a popular transport method for when you go ashore, providing a compact method of transport that doesn't have much if any ongoing cost, doesn't require insurance, is always available (unlike borrowing the marina car) and even provides exercise. Of course hauling heavy items and foul weather are downsides, but you can't have everything :-)This Business Week article details another new entry into the U.S. market in the folding bike scene. The Strida 5.0 sounds like a nice rig.

From Daily Mail:
It's the sort of car that any self-respecting secret agent would be proud to be seen in. This high-speed amphibious sports car can swim, hover above water and it's no slouch when it comes to flat-out speed either. At the push of a button a hydraulic mechani
Report from Boat ShowFor over fifty years the Tulsa Downtown Lions Club has sponsored the Tulsa Boat, Sport, and Travel Show at the formerly known IPE Building, but now known as the Quick Trip Center at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds in Tulsa, OK. This boat show has long been one of the top ten in the nation and is known as the starting signal of the new "lake season". All the boat dealers have very nice displays of the new boat lines. It is a great place to get a feel of the "air" for the soon to be here spring. Yes, it is still cold, but what a great time to dream of spring and summer and the lake. Of course the lake I like to see people dream of is Grand Lake located just a little over an hour's drive from Tulsa. Grand Lake and boating go hand in hand. It is such a pretty lake with varying scenry and great water to fish, swim, wake-board, or ski on. Home ownership on lakes is very popular for retirement or second homes and such is Grand Lake and Grove, OK, the larg
Located 36 kilometers off Chennai, Muttukadu Boat House is an unusual spot in backwaters for tourists and holidaying families. Also, Muttukadu is a paradise for anglers since prawns and jelly fish are in abundance here. For those who relish seafood being here could prove to be a memorable experience. Hundreds of holiday-makers visit Muttukadu Boat House daily to enjoy boat rides. It costs just rupees 50 per person for a three kilometer ride around the vast expanse of water that may be of 45 minutes duration. Developed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), Muttukadu Boat House captivates a large number of domestic as well as international tourists and especially the honeymooners visiting South India. "This particular boat house is really very great and we have enjoyed here a lot. We have never enjoyed before like this anywhere else. In Bangalore, we don't have any such big lake over there but this was a great experience," said Pranamya, a tourist from Bang

A couple of years ago (gee, has it been that long) we mentioned Duffy Electric Boats. Seems their use and popularity has continued to grow. Today, Mad Mariner™ has a pictorial/slideshow of some Duffy Electric Boats in Newport Beach, California.
Check it out for some nice boat pictures and some downloadable wallpaper for your computer if you like.
For full disclosure, I write some paid articles for Mad Mariner™.
This is a really slick site chronicling the use of 'paper' to build boats... from the 1800's until the present day, this material has been used to build full sized boats. All of us who are interested in building and alternative materials will find something of interest here.
Paper Boats? Is this for real?
This web page is devoted to an obscure subject in the history of technology: the manufacture of full size boats from paper during the later half of the 19th century. Not toy boats, but boats people could ride around in; racing shells, canoes and rowboats. There was even at least one steam launch built. This may seem like an extremely odd thing to be doing, but it made sense at the time. (Trust me!) If you read elsewhere on these pages you'll discover why. Start with the "Short History" below.
Today, amateur boat builders occasionally take a stab at making a paper boat for their own and other's amusement. For several years there was even a quarterly newsletter for paper boat
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian rescuers searched for seven people still missing on Tuesday after a boat sank in high seas off Sumatra island, leaving two people dead, police said. Five survivors were found after the accident in the Malacca Strait on Monday, said local police chief Agus Sarjito. The ship was travelling between coastal villages when waves as high as three metres engulfed it, he said. The safety record of Indonesian passenger ships and ferries, widely used to connect the thousands of islands in the archipelago, is poor with vessels frequently overloaded and in a bad state of repair.

Our friend Klaus Hafner sends us more links to interesting boat lifts on canals around the world.
I thought I had covered the Falkirk Wheel before, but I don't see it now. Its a fascinating and beautiful piece of engineering. Isn't even as energy intensive as you might think, given the balance between the two (extremely large) tubs of water. I hadn't seen this video of it in operation before:
Yet another design is shown on this French page. You can see some drawings/pictures part way down the page.
Klaus reports that wet and cold are keeping him from outdoor boat welding, but he is working on some plastic work for tankage.
The 99th annual Newport Beach Christmas Parade will set sail beginning Wednesday Dec 12th for five consecutive nights. The New York Times has called it one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation. This year's theme is "Twas the night before Christmas"The parade starts off Collins Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 8:30 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Two separate routes are run on different evenings.) The boats follow a longer route on the weekend, taking about three hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Parade takes about two and a half hours to make its rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. You can view the parade from pretty much anywhere along the harbor free of cost. The only problem is finding parking. All city parking lots will be open throughout the parade to accommodate viewers. There are also private lots along the parade route but they can be pricey. The lots I encountered ranged from ten to fou
Since we're on a roll again with boat transport methods, here's an interesting site. It is only in French or Dutch, but the pictures and panoramic view pretty much show the deal. Sail a couple of boats into a large "tub" of water, then raise it up the side of a hill :-)
Make sure and check the photo gallery for some in-use pictures in addition to some closeups of a model version.
This is some serious air! I don’t know if this jump is a result of the oncoming boat and the guy trying to save his life, or if it was a stunt that was planned out. Either way, don’t try this at home.

War fundingOf course the democrats think not sending a clean funding bill is a winning sstrategy for them, I don't think so. I think the American people want the military completely funded, even if they want out of Iraq.Alternative Minimum TaxThe argument isn't whether to fix the AMT, but how. with the Democrats wanting to raise taxes on "The Wealthy".Government spending billsThey have not passed ELEVEN of the TWELVE bills governing federal spending for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1st! They have actually set a new record!SurveillanceBoth parties want to approve permanent revisions to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a 1978 law governing interceptions of communications involving foreign terror suspects. The problem is how much court review should be required when foreign targets call or e-mail Americans. Another problem is whether companies that help the government eavesdrop on such calls should be given immunity from lawsuits.AT&T, Verizon and Qwest face about

Dane and I got busy and started erecting the new boat shed. Right now, if water leaks in the various holes in the tarp, etc. it mostly just falls through to the ground. That won't be the case once I start skinning things and I don't want it wet before I get the epoxy/fiberglass/paint/whatever on it. So we need a better cover.
As I discussed before, a PVC frame just seemed a good idea to me, so I went with it. I was taking the plans from PVCPlans.com and modifying them to suit my location, ideas and available materials.
Their plans called for long, one piece sections for each hoop, with the "ridgeline" connections done with T's slipped over the pipe.
Well, I can't easily source 1" pipe in 20' sections, and even if I stepped down to 3/4" which I could get, transporting it wasn't going to work.
I did have "cross" pieces available (4 way connectors) and 10' lengths that I could easily deal with, so my plan was to have 2 10' pieces that met at a 4-way at the ri

We covered Adventures of Greg and his goal of making the fastest human powered trans-Atlantic crossing a while back. Well, his boat is in the water and this video shows them doing some stability testing by "waking" it with a go-fast.Pretty stable. I like the retractable outriggers, and how they give righting flotation even in their retracted position.

A cute human interest story concerning the pumpkin regatta in Windsor, Nova Scotia... Grow a big pumpkin, hollow it out, and use it as a boat. Includes pictures and video :-)Definitely an alternative building material, although I expect it to be fairly short lived.
This is a neat blog with a slogan of "A sailing blog : Random thoughts and rants on boat design, boat building, and other boat bits..."... a bit more of a sailing bent than I have, but lots of alternative energy, etc.Not to mention, he was kind enough to link to Craft A Craft in a recent post. He found the Windbelt post of interest and has found a link to a more detailed web page for Humdinger Wind Energy, LLC.

This post refers to two related articles. One is “RHIO experts talk about problems, future of movement” and the other, which is a response to the first, is “Key to RHIO success: Stop thinking big.” Following are my thoughts on all this.Let’s begin with some definitions. RHIOs (Regional Health Information Organizations) are “consumer-centric” governing entities focused on improving care value (i.e., care quality, safety and affordability) by enabling healthcare providers (hospitals and clinicians) to share patient information securely. This information sharing is done through Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), which tie together providers—via centrally controlled or decentralized networks—using different computer technologies. And, although it is rarely discussed, a RHIO may also include Emergency Information Exchange (EIE) networks, which help first responders rescue, triage and transport victims to trauma centers when disaster strikes. In the first article, sev
Just a quick fun one for the home boat builders... to get on the water it doesn't always have to be steel, marine ply and epoxy :-)

Lot's of use computers on boats, but more and more people are beginning to make livings or at least part time jobs "online". Being able to work from anywhere/everywhere is a real advantage for those trying to live the cruising lifestyle.
One major online income group are the "Professional Bloggers"... a recent posting on Problogger.net let people give pictures or videos of where they worked. Many were non-traditional offices. The first on the list was a boat :-)
That poster/blogger is the host of Stuff4Restaurants.com, a supplier of advertising ideas for restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels & nightclubs. His posting describing his liveaboard lifestyle is interesting to those of us who dream of working "online" and being footloose and fancy free :-)
