Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 image workflow software is the latest version of one of the company's most popular photographic tools, providing an editing and organization solution geared toward professional photographers and amateurs who have large catalogs of images to manage. As a tool, Lightroom offers a lot of power, but has also brought a lot of confusion (even among professional photographers) as to how it works, who needs it, and how it differs from Photoshop. While slanted more heavily toward the needs of professional photographers, David Huss and David Plotkin's Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 for the Professional Photographer, a new guidebook to the software from Focal Press, attempts to answer some of the pressing questions surrounding the software and provide a detailed, easy-to-read trip through Lightroom's different modules and functions. With a street price around $25, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 for the Professional Photographer might be the ideal bit of pre-reading fo

The sad thing is according to reports his TV show after 17 Years has been canceled after this season. I think that is sad it will be a very missed show by many who watch it. Take time to think about your project before you begin the conversion process of turning your dissertation into a book manuscript.Think about the following:TARGET AUDIENCEWho are you writing your book for? Scholars? Or do you want to make your book more commercial? Identifying the audience you are dissertation writing for before you start writing is essential. If you know who you are writing for, you will know how to write to them.HOW TO SAY ITIdentifying your audience will determine how you write your book. Male Offspring #2's father will be released from jail this week--he was arrested for breaking into a porn shop--and he called saying he wanted to see his son. At first, I was totally against it. I mean who's stupid enough to break into a porn store when you can download it for free on the internet? And with the low quality of porn these days...puhleeze. (However, cop porn is a totally different story!) Talk about bad decision making. Then I relented. Precious and few are the moments those two can share, and all that crap. Besides, if things go the way I expect them to, he'll be back in jail by the end of this month. Probably for breaking into a library. Was that sour grapes on Natalie Cole's breath after the Grammy's last night? She objected to Amy Winehouse's wins saying, "She doesn't deserve it...she should get her life together first, then get the awards. • Book Review: The Theocons-Secular America Under Siege
A new review of mine from BlogCritics:You can't live in the United States of America and not notice the shift in politics towards religion. Almost daily we see the lines between Church and State become blurrier and blurrier. Damon Linker calls this movement theoconservatism and outlines the rise and development of this uniquely American point of view in his book The Theocons-Secular America Under Siege.Linker has a unique perspective as the former editor of First Things, the journal of the theocons. He believes that Americans should be scared enough by this small conservative movement to keep an eye and a check on how far religion is allowed to go in consulting with federal government. The argument is compelling. We are dealing with an administration that brought in faith based initiatives, faith based counseling, and that involved itself in the Terry Schiavo right-to-die case. It is also a proponent of "intelligent design", has passed (or attempted) pro-life legislation, is against

  • Book Review: Roast Chicken and Other Stories
And a cookbook review from BlogCritics:Simon Hopkinson is a venerable English chef and newspaper columnist who enjoys pushing for simple, home-y food. This cookbook, originally published in London in 1994, is a small but useful collection of Hopkinson's favorite recipes, along with personal stories and asides to accompany each one.My husband is a retired chef and his most basic meals are my favorites. Not that I don't love the rolled and stuffed game hens or the complex patés, but nothing compares to his beef lentil soup and his roast chicken with garlic buttermilk mashed potatoes. In Roast Chicken and Other Stories we find a celebration of simple home cooking. There's plenty of butter, cream, and other "no-no's" to be found, but very little processed pre-cooked and microwaved food. This book celebrates fresh food, be it potatoes, chicken, or calves brains. It is simply organized around Hopkinson's favorite ingredients, and while many of them are not appetizing to an American tast
  • Book Review - Yiddish for Dogs: Chutzpah, Feh!, Kibbitz, and More: Every Word Your Canine Needs to Know
And another of my BlogCritics book reviews...I grew up in a New York Eastern European Jewish household where Yiddish was spoken interchangeably with English. We never ate chicken gizzards, and I would pale at the thought of eating stomach, but I loved the "pupick". When something was bad a simple "Oy!" would do, but if you heard "Oy vay is mir" you knew things were really bad. Instead of glowing with joy we would "kvell". And people were never crazy, just "mishugeneh".So much Yiddish has entered into typical American English vocabulary that it makes sense that our dogs, even strays from a "goy" background, would still understand the words. I mean, what dog likes to "shlep" her owners around? And who wants only kibble when there is a "mishmash" of food in the trash? Why be on a diet when we can "fress"? And how can a dog not start barking or "plotzing" when lots of people come over the house? This is a short picture book written from the viewpoint of dogs. So we have fat fireplug
  • Book Review: Divine Canine - The Monks' Way to a Happy, Obedient Dog
Another BlogCritics Book Review:I was having sushi with a good friend and we were discussing pets and the difference between dogs and cats. Being a cat lover from the time I can remember I was not too interested in hearing about dogs, who I perceived as basically big dirty dumb animals. My friend had a different take; she said, "cats are nature's serial killers, but dogs were put here to teach us how to love."When my husband and I moved to the Caribbean I brought three cats over with me. One night a local stray dog, a "potcake" as we say, came to visit. "Don't feed it!", I yelled, "or it will keep coming back!" Well, he did feed her and she did come back and now we have no cats but are the proud owner of a 65 pound potcake named Smiley (the best dog in the world). Hmmm....She came housebroken and relatively social, but liked to run off, was overprotective, and did not play well with other dogs. Luckily I found a great dog trainer and groomer, and Smiley entered doggie day care with
  • Book Review: Learning PHP & MySQL - Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Database-Driven Web Sites by Michele Davis and Jon Phillips
A review I wrote for BlogCritics. First I must say that I was really excited to review Learning PHP & MySQL: Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Database-Driven Web Sites. My HTML skills have grown greatly over time and I am able to maintain a few HTML driven websites with a minimum of hassle and effort. I have limited time and little desire to immerse myself in any web development, but have been enamored by PHP and the database driven MySQL and the website functionality they promise. So when I saw the book described by the publisher as "perfect for newcomers to programming as well as hobbyists who are intimidated by harder-to-follow books," and "If you ... know your way around HTML, Learning PHP & MySQL is the book you've been looking for," I thought this could be the perfect opportunity to learn something useful and write a review at the same time. But after reading the book, downloading the software, and trying to follow what was presented, I know no more about how to use PHP & MySQL
  • Binani to book 300,000T Apr-Jun S.Africa coal next week
LONDON (Reuters) - India's Binani Cement Ltd will next week award a recent tender to buy 300,000 tonnes of South African coal for delivery in April-June, Indian traders said. Binani has been out of the spot market for months and has enough coal for the next couple of months, they said. However, they added, Indian cement makers may be taking the view that generally tight supply and strong demand in Asia could push prices still higher. This could explain their buying now, the traders said. Binani is expected to pay a slightly lower price to Ultratech, which a few days ago booked two prompt cargoes at around $143.00 a tonne CIF.
  • There’s An E-book Hiding In Your Blog:
Knowledge is power and if you are an avid writer or web content writer with your own blogsite, you are sitting in an oasis of power. For online content writers it doesn’t matter what their area of expertise is; anything that is written with conviction is important. You could manage a popular celebrity gossip blog, or you could have a blog talking about alternative medicine. Wherever there is information that is reliable and interesting on the Internet, there is an opportunity to earn profit from it. It was opportunities like these that led to the rise of many entrepreneurs during the dotcom boom in the 90’s. People are reeling in profits today using these very same ideas. E-books, as a medium of viral marketing, play an important role in online marketing. It’s easy creating one and if you regularly blog online, you have an e-book waiting to be published online. However, to preserve the credibility of your knowledge it is better to get the research and facts righ
  • Of Book Writing Machines:
A French professor of management science has unveiled a device that can be used to churn out more than 200, 000 books. All a writer needs to do is put in the plot for the book in the machine and it integrates into a database containing information similar to the topic. The machine then compiles the data into a book for the reader’s reading pleasure. How simple it all seems and how easy would it be to produce such immense quantities of literature. But then, what of the quality? While such a machine would be all right for creating content that is technical in nature, it would serve no purpose to create books on topics that have no fixed formulae. Web content writing, for all the convenience posed by such machines and free article websites, is a serious business. Search engines are more concerned with the content of a website and tend to overlook websites that consist of content that seems to be duplicated. Plus, if you are trying to build up a reputation by showcasing your writing

  • Not Quite What I Was Planning Book
Yesterday was a very exciting day for me because the contributor copy of the book I'm published in arrived in the mail! The title of the book is "Not Quite What I Was Planning....Six Word Memoirs" by Writers Famous and Obscure. I'm thrilled to be included because it is such a cool book. It is published by Harper Perennial. I'm somewhere in the middle between being a famous author and obscure author. My first and only book is still in print and available on Amazon and through distributors. Even though this book is in it's Second Edition, it feels REALLY old to me and needs updating. But this NEW 2008 Book is Fresh. Clever. Fun!The proposition put forth by online storytelling Smith Magazine is this: "what would a six-word memoir look like?" Here's more:"When Hemingway famously wrote, "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn," he proved that an entire story can be told using half a dozen words."If you would like to contribute your six line story for consideration in the next edition, click her
