  • Even low impact injuries in American football can result in brain damages
A new research using high-tech helmets has shown that even low-impact head hits in sports like American football can cause brain injuries, a finding which might lead to better understanding about head traumas and improved sporting equipments.   According to a report in Discovery News, Kevin Guskiewicz, professor of exercise and sport science and director of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, conducted the research.   Guskiewicz and his team conducted their research using a sensor-imbedded helmet called the Revolution IQ HITS, which contains six sensors that measure acceleration.   Placed at the crown of the helmet, as well as the left side, right side, face and back, the sensors measure in real time the amount of g-force a player's head experiences at impact, where the hit occurs, and where it comes from.   G-force, which is a measure of acceleration against the Earth's gravitational pull, is something astronau

  • Hypnotism produces measurable changes in the brain, shows study
Israeli researchers have shown that hypnotism actually produces measurable changes in the brain, refuting suggestions that it does not result in an altered state of consciousness.   Sceptics argue that hypnotism —commonly used to treat pain, anxiety, and phobias — is an exaggerated form of social compliance, where subjects suspend their critical faculties to do whatever a hypnotist asks of them.   However, Prof Yadin Dudai, a researcher at The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, insists that brain scans of people taken after a hypnotic suggestion to forget have revealed that parts of the brain really are affected.   During the study, two groups of volunteers — people susceptible to hypnotic suggestions, and individuals who were not — were shown a documentary depicting a day in the life of a young woman.   After a week, the participants were placed in a brain scanner. They were then induced into a hypnotic state, and given a posthypnotic

  • It Ain't Television... It's Brain Surgery
I heard about this short film a couple days ago on NPR and had to check it out. The 20 minute-long film is very well done and is definitely worth watching. You can see the whole thing here.Suffering from Parkinson's Disease, Ray Farkas decided four years ago to undergo a procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery, a radical step that would, if successful, reduce some of the shaking that Farkas had been forced to endure due to Parkinson's. The brain surgery requires patients to be awake in order to control the accurate targeting of shake-reducing electrical stimuli. Farkas decided to do what other talented filmmakers would nervously shy away from: he filmed it.The procedure was a success, but Farkas unfortunately passed away on January 4 due to complications from colon cancer. The five-time Emmy award winner had an illustrious career in the documentary television world and is highly respected amongst peers and friends. His sense of humor and love of life is captured in the film and

  • Simplicity and the Trading Brain
Whether they are making or losing money in the market, traders know that trading is first and last a mental game. When your system makes you money, can you stay out of its way so that it can continue to do so? And when your system inevitably suffers drawdowns, can you remain on the sidelines and not act like a belligerent parent at a Little League baseball game?Richard Dennis, who co-founded the legendary Turtle Trading System with William Eckhardt, once remarked that he believed that he could publish the entire then-secret Turtle Trading methodology in the newspaper and it wouldn't make a difference. Why? Because most people cannot follow the rules. And this was not because the rules were especially complex. It was because human beings are especially -- and perhaps in some ways, unnecessarily -- complex. We see the same thing when it comes to other challenges people have, whether it is in dieting and weight loss or quitting smoking. At this point in time, there are few people who do not

  • Remix your brain
Hello! I am back after a very long absense. Apologies for that. But i'm back now and ready to write about the awesome new music that is around, aswell as band and album reviews, guest writer Craig Duranti will be letting you all know what he's been spinning lately, and also we hope to have an interview with the excellent Moving Units.Todays post is about the world of Remixes. For me, remixes can be spilt into two pots. You have the songs which are aren't too well known, maybe album tracks, or singles which failed to make an impression, which are then given a new lick of paint, to build upon the original ideas but also give a new slant. Then you have the remixes of well known songs, which have enjoyed good commercial success, or cult following. The priniciple is the same, the original track is altered and combined with a new vision. It is with this second group of remixes that I struggle with. Take a song such as "Foxy Lady" by Jimi Hendrix, an absolute classic. Now two artists that I am

  • Man Beats Stage 4 Brain Cancer
This is about a fellow, whom I will not name in this article, who was suffering some very serious headaches for several months. They became worse and he had a seizure in Sept of 2006. He was unconscious for a day and a half. During that time he was airlifted to a hospital and had emergency surgery to remove 2 tumors, one being the size of a golf ball. The unfortunate thing was the third tumor was not operable because he would have become paralyzed and unable to talk. Those were not good options as you may well surmise. The remaining tumor was known as Glioblastoma multiforme. When you research that you will find if you use Wikipedia:Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), also knwn as grade 4 astrocytoma, is the most common and aggressive type of primary brain tumor, accounting for 52% of all primary brain tumor cases and 20% of all intracranial tumors. Despite being the most prevalent form of primary brain tumor cases GBM's occur at only 2-3 cases per 100,000 people in Europe and North America.

  • Changes to brain after cocaine abuse
I saw this article while i was reading on Reddit. I thought that i was very interesting as i have done posts on the 12-Steps and my Recovery. It is a very interesting article. Researchers have uncovered a key genetic switch that chronic cocaine or stress influences to cause the brain to descend into a pathological state. In studies with mice they showed how chronic cocaine changes gene activity to enhance the addictive reward from the drug. And they showed similarly how chronic stress induces the same kinds of changes that hypersensitizes the brain, causing depression-like symptoms. The researchers said their basic finding in the animals could lead to better treatments for addiction, depression and other psychiatric disorders.Eric Nestler and colleagues published their findings in the November 8, 2007, issue of the journal Neuron, published by Cell Press. In their experiments, the researchers explored how chronic cocaine or stress exerts “epigenetic” control of genes in the brain.
  • The baby's brain is disposed to learn language
On of the reasons why babies learn language so much easier than adults is because the differences in the brain. The baby's brain is like a sponge, and is disposed to learn languages. Babies are born with billions of brain cells, and among this brain cells, there are millions that control language. There are a lot of interesting cells connexion that make thing easier for the learning process. Most of the brain's language connections are well established by about 10. After 10, learning a language will be more difficult. When a baby hears people talk a language, his brain makes a bond with that language, the brain strengthens connections with that language. An adult who wants to learn a new language but has never been exposed to his target language when he was a child, will try to learn new sounds, but his language connection has been already and specifically wired to understand his native language ... so it will be more difficult for him. Most adults have trouble distinguishing sounds. Bab

  • For Some Patients, Brain Damage Cures Cigarette Addiction
Chemical dependency can result from many things: alcohol, caffeine, illegal drugs like cocaine, legal drugs like pain killers. But one of the most difficult dependencies to break is also one of the most common : smoking. The body becomes addicted to the nicotine in tobacco. Now, researchers may have found an important link in the brain to smoking addiction.Scientists at the University of Southern California and the University of Iowa studied thirty-two former smokers. All of the men and women had brain injuries as a result of strokes.Half of them reported that they were able to give up cigarettes quickly and easily after they suffered the brain damage. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that twelve of those sixteen patients had suffered damage to a part of the brain called the insula. The insula is found near the ear. Experts believe it somehow brings together emotional experience and sensory information with some activities like breathing. Experiments have suggested that the insula has

The condition, which can lead to memory loss, depression and anxiety, has been designated as one of four "signature injuries" of the Iraq conflict by the US department of defence, which is introducing a large-scale screening programme for troops returning from the frontline.Defence officials were reluctant to extrapolate directly from the US experience, arguing that the science is still inconclusive and that the US and UK experience in Iraq and Afghanistan h

  • Testing for Brain Cancer
Sadly, cancer affects many people and families each year. The pain and suffering this disease inflicts is immeasurable. Brain cancer is one of the worst types of cancer because if often is not found until late in the cycle. If a person has symptoms, such as severe headaches or seizures, there are many ways to test for this disease. First a doctor will perform a physical and neurological exam. These exams test a person's alertness, general physical wellness, coordination, muscle strength, and other physical attributes. After the physical and neurological exams, the doctor can order a CT scan to look for tumors in the brain. A CT scan is an x-ray of the brain. It can be used to find other diseases that affect the brain in addition to cancer.Beyond a CT scan, there are several other ways to look for brain tumors, such as MRI technology, angiograms, skull x-rays, spinal taps, and different types of biopsies. • Control Second Life With Your Brain.
There's a common misconception that everyone who plays video games are lazy because all they seem to do is sit on their ass all day. With the advent of the Wii this opinion has changed a little but there's still the idea that video gamers could be doing far more with their time. So, when some Japanese bioengineers come up with a way of playing games without even so much as moving a muscle you might concede that these 'haters' have a point.Unfortunately the 'game' they decided to test this on was Second Life and one could argue whether or not the 'games' users actually have brains that think about anything other than sex (cheer up, I'm kidding!). The device works by monitoring electrical activity in the motoro cortex via eternal electrodes on the scalp. Hmm, I'll let the experts explain this one;All a user has to do to control his/her avatar is imagine performing various movements. The activity monitored by the headpiece is read and plotted by an electroencephalogram, which relays it to

I wonder how many TBI survivors have this same feeling at times. As well meaning as others can be.I do forget, and I am not as clear about some things like I was. But I can still make educated choices. I can find out information and decide for myself, certain things. I don't need everything decided for me. Just like before my accident, I have to learn from mistakes, right? It is very frustrating. I understand that loved ones can worry about me. Worry that I might put myself in danger etc. But there are some things that are common sense, and I haven't lost that. I already can't drive myself anywhere. I can't go to Target, or the mall or even just for a drive. All things I used to be very independent about. I can't walk my dogs. I can't stand up long enough to cook. I can't work.
