Three more bodies were recovered on Friday from the Bheri River suspension bridge collapse site at Shobhaghat near Mehlkuna bazaar in Surket district, raising the death toll to 20. According to a Kantipur report, the bodies of two women and a child were found three kilometers west of the bridge at Jahare. The bodies have not been identified, the police said. Over 300 people were estimated to have been on the bridge to mark the full moon festival when the tragedy occurred. The site is located 40 kilometers northwest of Surkhet district headquarters. The heavily-crowded bridge is reported to have collapsed after a support pillar at one end could not withstand the weight. (ANI)
At least seven persons were killed and scores were declared missing after an overloaded suspension bridge over the Bheri River here collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 300 people were crossing the bridge, which connects Daha-chaur and Medhapura village defence committees in Surkhet. The bridge collapse took place at around 1:30 this afternoon, the district police office quoted eye-witnesses as saying. Among the seven dead were two women and five men. At least 15 people, most of them women and girls, have been rescued and taken to the Bheri Regional hospital by chopper. Security officials involved in aerial inspection of the incident site informed that scores of people could be seen flowing in the river. Deputy Inspector General at the regional Armed Police Force Office, Krishna Bahadur Bista informed that most of them included women and girls. Last weekend was a 3-day weekend, due to some national holiday on Saturday. First time to not work on Saturday, felt quite weird! Yasu and I used the opportunity to go on a little vacation to Awaji Island near Kobe. You guys probably no idea what island Im talking about so I included the map below. My Inuyama apartment is located somewhere around that yellow star and Awaji can be found in the green circle.To get from Honshu (the largest island of Japan) to Awaji we had to cross the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, otherwise known as the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge has three spans. The central span is 1991 meters long and the other two other sections are each 960 meters long, so the bridge is 3,911 meters long overall. The central span was originally only 1,990 meters, but the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 moved the two towers so that the length of the central span had to be increased by 1 meter (only the towers had been erected at the time). With "Gleaning Resource Descriptions from Dialects of Languages", or GRDDL (pronounced "griddle"), software can automatically extract information from structured Web pages to make it part of the Semantic Web. Those accustomed to expressing structured data with microformats in XHTML can thus increase the value of their existing data by porting it to the Semantic Web, at very low cost."Sometimes one line of code can make a world of difference," said Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director. video showing the replacement of a major section of the eastern
span of the Bay Bridge over the Labor Day weekend. Charismatic main
contractor, C.C. Myers, ecpalined the process and made it sound
very easy and straightfoward, which I'm sure it wasn't.
Nevertheless, the project was completed 11 hours ahead of schedule,
undoubtedly a credit to his project management.
The Bay Bridge closed at 8 pm Friday and
re-opened just before 6pm on Monday evening. This is the firsttime
the bridge was closed to all traffic since the 1989 Loma Prieta
earthquake.
According to all reports, numbers of visitors to
San Frabcisco from the East Bay were very much the same as on any
Labor Day wekend and people adapted well to the closing. BART laid
on extra trains and some people just went the long way round using
either the Golden Gate ot the San Mateo bridge depending on where
they started from.
Now once again, San Francisco is fully connected
to the East Bay.
