  • A tale of a Homeless man, the British Airport Authority PLC, and an ASBO.
There is a story in the newspapers which epitomizes just what a shitty society Britain has become; and how laws brought in to deal with yobbish behavior are being used to the advantage of big business and are being targeted at some of the most vulnerable people.Anthony Delaney, an unemployed chef who has fallen on hard times after loosing his job and home, found himself on the street and started using the facilities at Gatwick airport to wash himself and keep tidy. Out of sheer desperation he eventually ended up living under its roof, rather than face the fear and desolation of sleeping rough on the streets. The Airports owners encouraged the police to take him to court and eventually a court issued an ASBO against him in 2006 which banned Delaney from Gatwick airport and its train station until 2011. Mr Delaney understandably ignored the ASBO, as he was caught between a rock and a hard place, he could go back to living on the streets or ‘illegally’ stay at the airport where at lea

  • The British too wants to probe the moon
A few weeks back I wrote that 'India plans to probe the moon'. Today I read that the British too are planning to send an astronaut to space and probably send probes to the Moon as well. These were some of the proposals in the The British National Space Centre (BNSC) document, "The UK Civil Space Strategy: 2008 - 2012 and beyond".This means that the Thatcher Government's decision in 1986, to stop space exploration will be reviewed.Helen Sharman (from the BBC site)I initially assumed that Britain was the only developed nation that doesn't have an astronaut. However, I was wrong and later found out that Helen Sharman was the first Brit in space. She was part of Project Juno, which was funded by the Soviet Union and a few British companies.
  • The British security services by outing their informers in Ireland are attempting to re-write history.
In an article published on the Guardians Comment is Free web site, Mick Fealty of Slugger O’Toole wrote that whilst the exposure of yet another informer within the SF hierarchy “will not upset any constitutional apple-carts [as] Paisley's Democratic Unionists are committed to working with their former enemies almost come what may.” it does once again highlight “Sinn Fein's: violent past” “That fresh start promised by the St Andrews Agreement, is no longer fresh nor the clear cut break with the past that many within Sinn Féin would have wished for. Each time another fragment of its "secret history" becomes public, its democratic credentials tarnish just a little bit more.” *Indeed, but surely due to this continuos drip, drip of allegations about informers within Sinn Fein, it is time the debate was moved on to question just why the British Security Services, with the North of Ireland peace process securely bedded down, would wish to continue to out its own informers who

Newly appointed UN Messenger of Peace George Clooney has sought help from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the kidnapping case of a wealthy British businessman in Middle East.   Alsadig Abdullah, 26, has been missing inside the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for four months.   The actor got involved in the case following his attempts to promote peace talks in Sudan's troubled Darfur region.   In his letter, the ‘Ocean’s 13’ star has asked Brown to use his influence in resolving the case.   He wrote: "Whatever transpires it is clearly of interest to all of us with an interest in Darfur and the future of Sudan to facilitate anything that might further peace and stability in that country.   "Our petitions and interventions to the authorities in the UAE will be less effective than even informal ones from you."   Meanwhile a spokesperson at Brown's official residence confirmed receiving the letter.   "The prime mi

  • Is it surprising British politicians are becoming increasingly corrupt, when Thatcher and Blair set such an appalling example.
Historically British Prime Ministers have not been know for being economically corrupt, indeed former Labour Prime Ministers Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson and James Callaghan on leaving office lived comparatively modest life styles which would have been recognizable to most middle class English people of the day. If they had no private wealth of their own, Conservative PMs were usually looked after on leaving office by a number of rich businessmen donating a sum of money and setting up some sort of trust fund. Winston Churchill who enjoyed living high on the hog was the beneficiary of such charity on more than one occasion. This all changed with Margaret Thatcher, who learnt early on in her Prime Ministership that it pays handsomely to become anointed the US President’s most favored foreigner. Once a British Prime Minister was comfortably perched in this position brown envelopes where for lesser mortals, for they could look forward to being looked after on leaving office by Corporate

  • Russia rights activists bid to save British Council
ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Russian human rights campaigners have launched legal action against their own government for closing down the British Council's regional offices, an activist told Reuters on Wednesday. Last week Russia demanded the British cultural body close its two regional offices in Saint Petersburg and the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, which it said were operating illegally. British diplomats say Russia's move against the Council was part of a feud that has been simmering since Kremlin critic and emigre Alexander Litvinenko was killed in London by radiation poisoning in 2006. "I brought the suit in the Syktyvkar city court today. We believe that none of the Russian foreign ministry complaints announced in its demarche against the British Council had any legal grounds," Ernest Mezak, of the Memorial human rights group in the northern Russian republic of Komi, told Reuters. Russian courts rarely hand down rulings against the government. Komi, an o

  • Ken Livingstone: British media smear London's mayor
A recent Channel 4 Dispatches TV program which was presented by Martin Bright, of the left of centre weekly magazine the New Statesman, was little more than a crude attempt to smear London’s left-wing Mayor Ken Livingstone. Bright’s accusations were straight out of a 1980s Thatcherite ‘smear a lefty’ handbook. All that was different in Bright’s program was that he had replaced being in hoch to the Soviet Union with a tiny cabal of Trotskyites, and thrown in Hugo Chavez for good measure. The accusations Bright makes about Socialist Action would be laughable if Livingstone were not facing re-election this May, for the days when Trotskyists sent a chill down the ruling elites spines are long gone.Bright and Channel 4’s pathetic attempt to claim the Dispatches program was fair and balanced reporting came unstuck when on the day the program was due to be aired, the London Evening Standard published an article by Martin Bright which called on “all Londoners with a progressive

  • Silent Voices Extraordinary Literary Talent from Five British Somali Writers
Silent Voices is anthology of contemporary writing by five British Somali writers who powerfully express their views of being Somali in Britain, covering some of the controversial issues that have impacted each of their lives. The book was born as part of Monsoon Press’s Hidden Voices Programme funded by the Arts Council and has enabled previously unknown writers to product this fascinating and touching collection of extraordinary literary pieces. After more than a century of Somali presence in the UK, there is still a lack of knowledge about who they are. Many are misrepresented and the assumption is made that all are asylum seekers, are involved in crime gangs or are uneducated and unskilled. Silent Voices attempts to dispel some of these bigoted perceptions by presenting to the world a wealth of hidden talent from five writers who find expression through their eloquent prose and poetry. One of the contributors, 33-year-old Zahrah Awaleh, was born and raised in England. Zahrah

Now that al-Qaeda has threatened to kill him, I wonder if he will take the War on Terror seriously now. Intelligence services are investigating a threat on an Islamist website to kill Gordon Brown, adding credence to warnings by the US security chief about the rising danger from home-grown European terrorists. Security experts fear the posting in Arabic on www.alekhlaas.net, referring to "the creation of the al-Qa'eda organisation in Britain", may be genuine. The site, which has been visited by more than 17 million people, also urges young Muslim men to rise up against infidels such as "(Prime Minister Gordon) Brown and (Tony) Blair". "You don't ignore this sort of thing," Pauline Neville-Jones, the former head of the British joint intelligence committee, told the BBC's Newsnight. "It may not be a threat from an existing cell ... but it does represent a move in the propaganda game and the propaganda game is not something we should ignore. Atif Amin, a British customs agent, who investigated the nuclear smuggling network of disgraced Pakistani scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, has himself become the target of a British criminal probe after being prominently featured in a book by American researchers on Pakistan’s nuclear bomb.   The British media has refused to let this issue die though the case surfaced here last month.   The Guardian has once again taken the government to task on Friday that how the government was trying to use the Official Secrets Act to stop the leakage, which might put it in a difficult position.   Earlier, it was reported that British authorities with warrants, alleging violations of the country’s Official Secrets Act, searched Atif Amin’s house and car.   The action came less than two months after the publication of “America and the Islamic Bomb,” which chronicles Amin's efforts to uncover the Khan network in 2000, more than three years before th
