VTech Kidizoom Digital CameraGot this camera as a present for my 3-year-old daughter - she loves it! She can switch it on and off by herself and is always asking for '[her] camera' so she can snap a picture. It's also absorbed a few harsh drops without any trouble.Caveats:- Though it's named "Kidizoom", it does not actually have any zoom functionality. (Not that a toddler would know what to do with it!)- Don't try to use a miniSD or microSD card with an SD adapter, and MMC cards won't work either - the camera will start up and immediately shut itself down again. A cheap plain SD card does fine - I put in a 256MB SD that I had lying around and, given that the built-in 16MB held well over 100 of her pictures, I'm sure she'll never fill it up.- Like many low-end digitals, it doesn't work all that well if lighting is dim, like indoors at night - it needs to be held more still than a toddler can manage. There is a flash, but it will totally bleach out anything taken at toddler-interest rang
With rich features, a big 14.6MP sensor, and an estimated street price of $1,299, Pentax's super DSLR is a rare talent. The 10.2MP Pentax K10D was a DSLR bargain in 2007 with its nearly pro body, excellent image quality, fast AF, image stabilization, and a price of only $920 (body only) when launched. It's still a steal at $700 (street). But if you want a camera with higher resolution, larger LCD, live view, and other enhancements, check out the new 14.6MP Pentax K20D ($1,299, estimated street). At first, the K20D seems to be a twin to the K10D. Pentax kept what was outstanding in the K10D and improved it in all the right places, so the K20D is more of an upgrade than a new design. We got our hands on one of the first production units, and after running it through the Pop Photo Lab and field tests, found five reasons why this camera promises to be a big hit.Image qualityThis camera captures the most detail in its price class at ISOs below 1600. DxO Labs today announced that DxO Optics Pro v5, the latest version of its award-winning flagship software application for automatic image quality enhancement for Digital SLR camera users, now supports the new Nikon D3 camera body and an initial selection of lenses. The addition of this professional Digital SLR comes close on the heels of support for the recently released Nikon D300 advanced Digital SLR. Lens correction modules for three popular Nikkor lenses are available for the Nikon D3: the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D and the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. Support for the Nikon D3 and lenses is available in DxO Optics Pro v5 Elite. The new Nikon D-SLR is built for high performance shooting featuring a full frame sensor and high ISO capabilities for exceptional results even in low light. “This SLR is built for demanding professional photographers who will make no compromise in image quality. And that’s what DxO Optics Pro is all about: getting the be
Nikon hit the photographic community with a big one/two punch late last year announcing two new DSLR cameras, the D300 and the new full frame sensored D3. Both cameras deliver 12.3 megapixels with surprisingly similar characteristics. The D300, which I'll be writing about here is the cheaper of the two coming in at a list price of $1,799 compared to the D3's $4999. Before the D300 started shipping people didn't know if the new camera was going to be more evolutionary or revolutionary in its features. It turns out to be a bit of both. Nikon was almost coy about letting out information on the camera and samples of the camera's output were as scarce as Trekkers at a Hells Angels get together. I had to wait a long time to get a sample camera from Nikon but last week it was delivered along with Nikon's also hard-to-get 18~200 VR zoom lens and a SB-800 strobe unit.Modern digital cameras are more computer than what most of us old-timers consider a camera. They capture the analog signal (light
Mac OS X 10.5.2, released today as a free update to the current version of the Mac operating system, adds support for RAW files from the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon PowerShot G9, Hasselblad CF-22, Hasselblad CF-39, Leaf Aptus 75s, Nikon D3, Nikon D300 and Sony Alpha DSLR A700. Once installed, Apple applications, as well as non-Apple applications that draw on the same OS-level code, should be able to view and convert files from these cameras, though some may require updates of their own to utilize the expanded RAW file support. In a quick check here with RAW files from the EOS-1Ds Mark III and D300, it appears that Apple's Preview and iPhoto, as well as the Finder itself, are now capable of decoding CR2s and NEFs from these cameras (note we haven't tried all RAW variants from these two models). Aperture, however, is still out in the cold: it displays "Unsupported Image Format" when attempting to view large newly-imported RAW files from these cameras, ones that decode just fine in the
For image quality and fine detail that rivals or exceeds that of many medium-format systems, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is the only DSLR in its class. What does it take to be the best? In comparing DSLRs, the answer is incredible image quality and performance. Especially for pros, it also takes a nearly unbreakable camera body, long-lasting battery, and a wide range of accessories to ensure that you don't miss the critical shot. Is all of this worth $8,000 (street) for the camera body alone? Canon hopes that enough pros will think so once they discover the capabilities of its new 21.1MP EOS-1Ds Mark III.The latest in a series of EOS-1Ds professional-level cameras, the 1Ds Mark III showcases Canon's most advanced, super-high-megapixel, full-frame sensor. The earlier models broke ground with 11.1MP and 16.7MP sensors (on the 1Ds and 1Ds Mark II, respectively), and all were built to handle the rigors and demands of professional use.In our tests in the Pop Photo Lab, the 16.7MP 1Ds Mark II exceed

8 February 2008 - Theres no denying that the Nikon D3 is a lot of camera, sporting a host of advanced features befitting a camera pitched at the top level of professional shooting - it even comes equipped with Live View. And before you ask, yes, it can auto-focus using all of the 51-AF zones available in Live View too.The new CMOS sensor provides a seemingly modest 12.1-megapixel resolution looking a little out of sorts particularly when compared to, say, Canons 21-megapixel EOS 1Ds Mk III, with which the D3 will undoubtedly compete, although, it must be remembered the Canon is almost double the price! On the upside it means the pixel pitch will be better than the Canon (thats bigger pixels to you and me) and means an excellent signal to noise ratio, so noise is all but non-existent.Image processing is controlled by Nikons EXPEED image engine and as with the recently tested D300, it works very well indeed, allowing the cameras amazing ISO range of 100 to 25,600 to becom
LAS VEGAS--Two's company, three's a crowd, and Canon's Chuck Westfall is a lot less lonely these days.Canon once was the sole camera company offering a digital SLR whose sensor is the size of a full frame of 35mm film, a technology that can increase the performance advantage and price penalty that SLR cameras already have compared with compact cameras. In November, though, Nikon began selling its full-frame rival, the D3, and last week Sony said it will launch its own full-frame competitor by the end of 2008. Westfall is a camera tech guru and the technical adviser for Canon USA's professional products marketing division. In his 25 years at Canon, he's amassed an encyclopedic knowledge not only of official camera specs but also deeply buried engineering details.Westfall shared his opinions about the full-frame market and other camera trends during the Photo Marketing Association trade show here. He also discussed fuel cells to replace batteries, flash memory technology, OLED displays,

It may be the easiest $700 sale retailers make this year: Americans are hot for D-SLR cameras and manufacturers exhibiting at PMA this week in Las Vegas are introducing lower-costing, higher-performing consumer models to meet the demand.Canons upgrading its top-selling entry-level D-SLR, the Rebel XTi, with the new 12.2 megapixel XSi, due out in April at $799. Nikons in the game with the D60, a consumer D-SLR with onboard editing and a Stop Motion Movie feature, launching this month for $750. Sony, Samsung, Pentax and Olympus have sub-$1000 contenders too. Were seeing very powerful products and great prices, says Nikons Senior Technical Manager, Steve Heiner. These products dont sit on shelves.Indeed, shipments and sales of D-SLRs outpaced most analyst predictions in 2007. REVIEW: 30 January 2008 - Samsungs entry in to the D-SLR marketplace came by rebadging Pentax D-SLRs and allows the company to build a corner in the market from which it can attempt to expand its market share. Samsung threw money at building its compact model market share and it has worked and Samsung assured us that it will develop its own D-SLRs in the near future and already the GX10s update, the imaginatively named GX20 has been announced. So, it is not before time that the GX10 arrived on my desk and on the face of it, the camera is identical to the Pentax K10D on which it is based. Advantages are the camera has a massive lens range to adopt with an even bigger installed lens base as all KA and KAF2 optics can be used.Build is tough with key camera seals proofed against ingress of dirt and moisture including the SDHC external storage port on the cameras right side. The 10.2-megapixel sensor boasts a sensor cleaning system that unfortunately clearly does not work prop

Canon has updated its entry-level digital camera for the first time in over 15 months, but has the wait been worth it? We had a chance to get an early hands on with the new 450D (or the Digital Rebel XSi for our American readers) at the company's Spring Collection event in London.Normally when a DSLR from Canon is updated there are tweaks here and there perhaps implying why it has always gone for the increase of the number 50 in the model number rather than a whole 100. But here it seems Canon has not simply stopped at increasing the megapixel count from 10 to a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor but added stacks of other features and design changes. From a design perspective it's not a completely new design but there are improvements and changes from the 400D. The most obvious is the increase in screen size from 2.5 to 3-inches.The change, which also promises to be 50% brighter than the one on the 400D makes a massive difference especially when viewing images on playback. Because of the new sc

For many professional photographers, their camera is a friend, a trusted companion and colleague. When an important story hinges on the functioning of their "partner," they want a product that is, above all, trustworthy. As a result, photographers are often loyal to their chosen brand. Even if a shooter doesn't care for the ongoing Canon vs. Nikon rivalry a conflict between fans of the two leading manufacturers of single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras that is akin to the zealous debates over the virtues of Mac and Windows changing allegiances is tricky once you're used to the ergonomics of a certain brand and using its software, batteries and lenses. This is all about to get much more complicated. Nikon is trying to up the stakes with the launch of its new D3 camera, believing that loyal "Canonistas" will suddenly want to pick up Nikon's ambitious new product in place of its direct competitor, Canon's EOS-1DS Mark III.Nikon's literature boasts, "with the fastest startup time, shortest
Based on the body of Nikon's D200, which means it accepts a wide range of compatible lenses, the 12Mp Fujifilm S5 Pro is Fuji's only digital SLR camera. The Fujifilm S5 Pro upgrades the S3 model there was no S4 and is again aimed squarely at those who specialise in portraits and landscapes. The re-designed Super CCD SR Pro sensor at the Fujifilm S5 Pro's heart boasts unique properties. The honeycomb layout is split into six million larger 'S' diodes, which capture most of the light, and a further six million 'R' diodes, which capture 'bright area' information for example, fine detail on an all-white dress that would be in danger of 'burning out'.You can also control dynamic range with six incremental settings, plus there are shooting modes that vividly ape the colour-rich qualities of Fuji roll film.Among the Fujifilm S5 Pro's effective improvements is a new filter to reduce image noise in low light without flash, with light sensitivity up to ISO3200, plus an internal process
The Sigma SD14 is a fast and responsive digital SLR camera with a rugged build and intuitive uncluttered control layout.Acclaimed third-party lens and accessory manufacturer Sigma has bravely but hitherto not totally successfully attempted to cut out the middleman and launch its own series of digital SLRs, boasting a unique Foveon sensor with a three-layered pixel configuration one layer each for red, green and blue light.Sigma claims that while conventional CCD or CMOS sensors are good at detecting the intensity of light, they miss a lot of colour information. The Sigma SD14 - Sigma's third attempt at a digital SLR - now comes with a Foveon X3 chip and according to Sigma delivers results equivalent to a 14Mp model.Image quality is, of course, about more than pixels. The Sigma SD14 then has other features including a removable dust protector, light sensitivity ranging from ISO100 to ISO1600 and the ability to shoot common Jpeg as well as best-quality RAW files. more : pcadvi

The D300s new higher resolution sensor means Nikon has had to develop a new processing engine called Expeed that chews through the cameras 16-bit files that are downsampled to 12 or 14-bit NEF RAWs or 8-bit TIFF or JPEG files. The boost in resolution of the new CMOS sensor and its extra 2-megaipxels of resolution might seem a risky strategy if it has adversely affected the image quality. So lets have a look over the new camera and those images. Some of the new kit includes a faster frame capture rate in continuous shooting jumping rather modestly from five to six frames per second and 8-fps but disappointingly only using the optional battery grip. The camera has a very nice 3-inch, 920k-pixel screen that is bright, sharp, and very easy to use and includes Live View technology that includes two modes with AF possible in both of them. Nikons D-Lighting system is also built-in as is Active D-Lighting (in three modes of low, normal and high) that helps sort differences between sh
Canon has lowered the retail price in Taiwan for its EOS 400D, an entry-level DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera, with the price of camera body alone dropping by 10.9% from NT$22,900 to NT$20,400 (US$629) and that of body plus EF-S 18-55mm lens kit from NT$25,900 to NT$23,400, according to Canon Marketing (Taiwan). The price for the EOS 400D plus the 18-55mm lens kit is 6% lower than the NT$24,900 charged for Nikon's entry-level DSLR camera, the D40X, implying that Canon is attempting to compete with Nikon in Taiwan, retail channels pointed out.In addition, Canon has also offered a discount price of NT$28,300 for double lens kits, that is, an EOS 400D camera body together with a EF-S 18-55mm lens kit and a 55-250mm telescopic lens kit, Canon Taiwan indicated. The sale in the fourth quarter was estimated at 2.4 million sets. The sale of digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras was put at 310,000 sets, up 47.6 percent. San Francisco, CA (January 11, 2008) Macworld Booth W-4725 Lensbabies, LLC, showcases today The Original Lensbaby, a flexible camera lens that creates a 'sweet spot' area of focus that photographers can move around the image area by bending the flexible lens tubing. The Original Lensbaby brings the imperfect Holga look to digital and film SLR photography, but with greater versatility and new effects. While Lensbabies have broad appeal, the unique imagery is particularly attractive to portrait, wedding, product, and fashion photographers. An image created by a Lensbaby lens has a circular area of sharp focus. The photographer can move that in-focus area by bending the flexible lens tubing in any direction. The farther from this sharp area, the greater the blurring and prismatic color distortions. Photographers can control the size of the sharp area and the overall level of blur by using one of four aperture settings: f2.8, f4, f5.6, and f8."The beauty of these lenses is in their c
