Call for breakdown of MPs' expenses
MPs face having virtually all of their expenses broken down for publication after a ruling by Information Commissioner Richard Thomas.
He ordered the House of Commons to release the details of several MPs' claims in a move that could open the floodgates to similar demands relating to all parliamentarians.
Allowance claims for the MPs' staff, IT, stationery and the cost of living away from home should be published in detail, Mr Thomas said. Currently only the totals under each heading are released.

One of the many benefits of being a conservative as opposed to a liberal is that we never have any shame about self-criticizing our own party. Being naturally opinionated, conservatives won’t hesitate to call out one of our own for a little verbal slapping when needed. Where liberals will openly turn on each other out of ambition, the motive from the political right is borne out of keeping the team strong in the fight against the other side. It is from that basis that I write today. You wouldn’t believe how frustrating it is to be even slightly to the political right in Canada. Our current Conservative minority government represents but a reprieve from the seemingly endless reign of the Eastern Canadian dominated Liberal governments. It has become impossible to differentiate between actual news stories and leftwing opinion propaganda segments on our national broadcaster, the C.B.C. Promise her the world, and show her you’ll care for it as well. Gents, forget blood diamonds. To show your beautiful wife just how much she means to you, consider getting an earth-friendly engagement ring. There is so much controversy involved with mining diamonds, that a lot of couples have opted to skip the icey bobbles entirely. For the bling-thirsty yet globally conscious, there are alternatives! You won’t have to sacrifice glitz or contribute to the unethical treatment of miners thanks to San Francisco-based Brilliant Earth. The business was launched by Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg as a result of their love for each other and the Earth. Eric was stumped because he couldn’t find an ethical source for the dimaonds, so created Brilliant Earth as an alternative to the cruel industry. “All of our diamonds come from Canadian mines that follow environmentally sustainable practices and are committed to delivering high quality gems. Canadian Superior Energy Inc. announced today that its "Victory" well is currently drilling on the "Intrepid" Block 5(c) offshore Trinidad at a depth of 12,285 feet subsea. The "Victory" well had previously reached a total depth 16,621 feet (subsea), and was evaluated while drilling with Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD) data (gamma, electrical resistivity, cutting samples, gas in mud measurements, drilling parameters). However, while attempting to come out of the hole to commence wireline logging and possibly flow testing of the well, difficulties were encountered which resulted in being unable to remove the full drillstring from the well. Accordingly, the drillstring was severed at a depth of approximately 11,726 feet and the well plugged back to a depth of approximately 9,594 feet, as announced on September 11, 2007. The lower portion of the well is being re-drilled to a projected total depth of approximately 16,000 feet and is being directionally dr

In an all-too-familiar scene, the Canadian Federation of Students comes out swinging for MMP.September 13th, the Federation sent out a media release ("Students Say: It’s Time To Change The System ") announcing that it had created "Change the System" - a website designated as a lobby for the pro-MMP crew."The Federation points to lagging youth voter turn-out and the growing cynicism associated with strategic voting as issues that would be remedied by an MMP electoral system. Concern about these issues is what led students from across the province, through the Canadian Federation of Students, to research the voting system and endorse the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. The overwhelming student support for changing the voting system to MMP is based on the positive results in other jurisdictions, including greater voter choice, fairer election results, and stronger elected representation for traditionally under-represented groups. As Hillary is proposing a universal healthcare program (i.e. socialist gov't), we are given this recent news about a member of the Canadian parliament seeking cancer treatment in the United States. Apparently; this isn't the first time Canadians with money have come across the border to seek treatment. I urge you to go to the article and read the comments. You find Canadians commenting on how "broken" the universal healthcare system really is. It is being twisted to appear like a personal attack against the MP, it's not, it's pointing out the failures of universal healthcare. Liberal MP Belinda Stronach, who is battling breast cancer, travelled to California last June for an operation that was recommended as part of her treatment, says a report. Stronach's spokesman, Greg MacEachern, told the Toronto Star that the MP for Newmarket-Aurora had a "later-stage" operation in the U.S. after a Toronto doctor referred her. "Belinda had one of her later-stage operations in California, af
The EU is set to declare that Canada should be opening visa-free travel to more of its member-states, particularly central European nations, many of which are former Warsaw pact members. Although I agree in principle that we should be engaging these nations directly, and offering some leniency due to their participation in the EU, I disagree with foreign entities attempting to dictate our foreign policy. The EU is apparently going to go as far as to warn punitive measures if Canada does not comply. This is unacceptable.Canadians will dictate who we allow in to our country without Visa's.. Not Europeans.Of course, it would seem there is little that the EU could really do to punish Canada; meddling in Canadian internal affairs is not something I can sit around and be quiet about...Interestingly, CTV's non-scientific poll on their website is about 75% against allowing all member-states visa free status. If there was a margin of error of 25%, this would still show strong opposition to the
For years now, if you buy blank media in Canada, part of the price has gone to the local music industry to make up for the "losses" home taping and CD burning have caused it. Some well-meaning Canadians have started moving plans that will extend this levy to mp3 players and the like. The Canadian Music Industry is rushing to try and stop this happening.Yes, you heard: to stop it. As they've realised that it would effectively mean peer to peer fiel sharing in Canada would be perfectly legal, even for copyrighted material. It's caused something of a split between the board which oversees the levy, the Canadian Private Copying Collective - which wants the lucrative "iPod tax", as there's not much future for it in levying blank tapes and CD-Rs - and the CRIA. A knock-on effect is the bringing into the open of a disjunction between the artists who have been recompensed under the exisiting scheme, and those who have had their work copied. In other words: Canadian artists have been getting a
