  • Carnival 2008 in Playa del Carmen
This evening, the kids and I had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time. Since Carnival was postponed this year because of the local elections, there has been some confusion about when and if Playa del Carmen would hold this much anticipated festival. While Playa is notorious for its inability to properly deseminate information, this year really took the cake. No posters, no painted banners, no floats lining the streets letting us know that the festival was approaching. In years past, the whole Municipal Plaza has been a whir with activity: vendors hawking their wares, travelling carnies setting up death trap thrill rides, churro carts filling the air with the smell of warm sugar and fun!! Sadly, we seem to have missed out on all that this year. What we did see was a short but enthusiastic parade down 5th Avenue. The kids were thrilled !! This year's parade was a much abbreviated version of Carnival that once stretched from the zocalo nea
  • Another Short Quiverfull Carnival
I am breaking from my typical Saturday postings today. I sat here trying to work on them but they were just not coming together. This post has been sitting in draft form for a while and was staring me down. So today must be the day to post it. Please visit the links, leave comments, and be blessed by the testimonies given. Hopefully, you will leave a comment here too. Here is our second Quiverful Carnival.Lisa from Me & My House writes: "How can children be so controversial, especially in Christian circles? It doesn’t seem to be so in Muslim circles, or Mormon circles, and it wasn’t in Christian circles prior to the mid-1900’s either. But it is today. So this post will no doubt be controversial."Read more of her article, Children~ A Heritage.Jennifer Posted an article written by Jewish Rabbi Shmuley Boteach on The Blessings of Children. • Catholic Carnival 156: Saints, Sin, Politics, and Life
There is a little of everything in this Catholic Carnival - from great information about Saints and Cardinals to incisive looks at our political culture today. I started to organize it more, but it just felt more like life when I left it a little messy. Without any other jibber-jabber, here's the Catholic Carnival: Spending a Year in Good Company at Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering reflects on Sarah's patron Saints for this year: Sts. Paul and Barnabas. She also includes links to find your patron Saint for this year. Things I'm Learning from Saint Catherine of Siena at Postscripts from the Catholic Spitfire Grill does just what the title suggests and explores judgmentalism and personal holiness. What's Intent Got to Do With It? at We Belong to the Lord answers the question with a few examples that perfectly explain. Relativism is everywhere. Cardinal Arinze: "Stop Ad-Libbing the Mass!" at Contrariwise reflects on a speech about the language in the liturgy by Cardinal Arinze
  • Carnival of Quiverfull Testimonies
A couple of months ago, I began a blogroll for those who are actively living out the Quiverfull Lifestlye. The Quiverfull lifestyle is a movement among conservative evangelical Protestant Christians. Roman Catholics and some others might refer to the Quiverfull position as Providentialism. Those who hold this position do so not in an attempt to simply have large families but to leave in the hands of the Lord God Almighty His sovereignty and authority over the womb. The distinguishing viewpoint is to eagerly receive children as blessings from God, abandoning all forms of contraception, including natural family planning and sterilization. This post will seem "carnival-like." It's purpose is to highlight the testimonies of those who have joined thus far. There is some amazing, encouraging, heartbreaking, and hopeful reading contained within these links. Whether you hold this position or not, live it out or not, there is no doubt that if you read the testimonies you will see God at wor

  • Catholic Carnival 154: Our Culture: Faith, Media, Politics
This week's Catholic Carnival seems to be all about the pieces of our lives that make up our national culture. It seems appropriate to discuss our culture at the start of a new year - we even have posts challenging us to improve it (through learning and teaching our Faith). So without further adieu, here's the Catholic Carnival: Faith: that sustains us and our culture. As a first time religious ed teacher (I have first graders), I can attest to the truth of Catholic Matriarch in My Domestic Church's submission. But it's more than that! She offers A Catechetical Challenge for 2008. Are you up to the task? Father V at Adam's Ale throws a little humor, a lot of truth, and some thoughtful opinion in a post on eulogizing called Not Such A Dead Topic. Think a eulogy should be done at Mass? Read this post first . . . My Domestic Church gives us a little More on Saint Columba. It all starts with an email - and I would be surprised if you don't learn something new. And with more to learn,

  • Contest for Carnival of Homeschooling Graphics
Why Homeschool is having a contest for Carnival of Homeschooling graphics. Henry and Janine Cate from Why Homeschool write: Over the last two years several people have suggested we have a graphic or two for the carnival. I haven’t followed up on these suggestions. I’m not a very artsy person, so I didn’t feel confident in my ability to generate a cool graphic for the carnival. Here are some great carnival graphics. I’ve really enjoyed the graphic for the Homeschool Blog Awards. It recently occurred to me that one way to get some cool graphics for the Carnival of Homeschool was to invite others to generate candidates for a contest. This is taking advantage of the The Wisdom of Crowds. What we are going to do is have a two stage contest. For the first stage people can generate and submit icons for the carnival. They can post the icon on their blog and use Mister Linky to generate a link back. Or they can leave a comment telling us how to get the icon. We want to make sure people

  • Catholic Carnival 147: Giving, not Receiving
We try to focus on the giving aspects of Advent and Christmas with our children and this Carnival just seemed to go along those lines (maybe it's just the way I was thinking!), so I carved it up in terms of Giving thanks, love, learning and even humor. Enjoy: Giving Thanks We Belong to the Lord celebrates Thanksgiving with her grandmother's recipes. And while cooking, why not reflect grandmother's life, love, and wisdom handed down over the years. The Buckeyes are third, but Sarah is second in this Carnival. At just another day of Catholic pondering she brings us An Unexpected Gift from God. She explains how choosing a godparent became a special gift to her through the wisdom the godparent shared with his goddaughter. Giving Love luminousmiseries offers a great penitential devotion in On the Road to Purgatory. It recommends a book exploring how to devote 30 days of prayer for the souls in purgatory - a great devotion particularly during Advent. Streams of Mercy brings us a wonde
