NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India has cut customs duties on a host of items, including cars, bikes, vegetable oil and other foodstuffs from South Asian countries to conform with a regional trade pact, the finance ministry said on Wednesday. The reductions on more than 120 items came into effect from Jan. 1, the Central Board of Excise and Customs said in a notification. The duty on cars and motorcycles imported as completely knocked down units from Pakistan and Sri Lanka has been reduced to 10 percent from 12.5 percent. Similar units from Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan will have no duty, compared with 10 percent earlier. For cars and motorcycles in any other form, the duty has been slashed to 0-20 percent from 40-50 percent. The duty on refined vegetable oils has been slashed to 0-20 percent from 56.67-68.75 percent, while palm oil will attract 0-20 percent from 53.33-65 percent. NAGOYA, Japan (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp expects to sell 2.64 million vehicles in the United States in 2008, up about 1 percent from an estimated 2.62 million this year, a top executive said on Tuesday. In Asia excluding Japan, Toyota expects to raise sales by 20 percent to 1.58 million vehicles, of which about 700,000 will be in China for a rise of 43 percent, Executive Vice President Tokuichi Uranishi said.

I think this is a superb idea, since I see no reason for our innocent children to be inhaling deadly smoke into their lungs.
But isn't it defeating the entire purpose of protecting the child's health if an officer cannot ticket the offending parties without first citing them for an unrelated driving offense? What about child abuse from the secondhand smoke? isn't THAT a serious enough reason?!
Don't you just feel so sorry for Philip Morris USA, (who, by the way is the leading cigarette manufacturers in this country) who is also attempting to keep children from inhaling secondhand smoke?
