MUMBAI: Infrastructure major GMR Group is looking at lucrative opportunities of developing railway stations in the country in the event of their being privatised, a senior company official said. "Privatisation of railway stations is being proposed, though the configuration of how this will be done has not yet been decided. We are, however, very interested in this business," GMR's CFO, Strategic Finance, Ashutosh Agarwala, said here. With the freight corridor (Delhi-Mumbai) now imminent, GMR scents an immense opportunity in this segment. "However, we need to have a clear framework ready before we can begin to move forward," Agarwala said. On ports privatisation, which has now picked up momentum in the country, Agarwala said that "it was a good business and the group would look at this sector as and when an opportunity comes up." Presently, the group is not active in ports development. The group has, however, emerged as a big player in the airport development space and is presently devel
The Tamil Nadu Government has requested the Centre not to shelve the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project because of the issues raised by some people for their political gain. In his customary address at the beginning of the State Assembly session, Governor said that this project is a long-pending dream of the people of Tamil Nadu and "desired" by scholars and eminent personalities. The construction work at Ram Sethu Project had been stopped by the Supreme Court after a number of writ petition were filed seeking stoppage of demolition of the mythological bridge believed to have been constructed by Lord Rama. "This government urges the union government not to go back on its endeavour to transform the future of people of Tamil Nadu to one of progress and prosperity and to continue with implementation of this unique and constructive project," Barnala said while addressing the State Assembly. The 560-million dollar project, approved by the government in 2005, plans to d
Scholars from India and abroad, who feel that religion in India has been seen from European or ‘colonial’ eyes, are going to give a fresh look and try to evolve a framework for interpreting it at a conference which will commence on Monday. The joint effort is being organised by the Ghent University of Belgium in cooperation with the Kuvempu University and the Karnataka Academy for Social Sciences from Karnataka. Too much effort at ‘liberalisation’ and making religion ‘secular’ is not the answer to current problems and efforts to avoid violence. What is required for Indians is to understand the true significance of religion, said Dr. Balagangadhara Rao of Ghent University of Belgium, who is going to give the keynote address at the conference opening on Monday, January 21, said at a press meet here yesterday. Dr. Rao said: “We have a rich past. How our traditions, culture and religious way of living have been in the pas

Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K.Vasan today said that the Centre will extend all required help to people affected by torrential rains in Tamil Nadu. "Whatever the quantum of assistance sought by the state, my party will stand by it to get the funds from the Centre," Vasan told reporters here. He went on to say that it was both the Centre and the State Government's duty to help the affected people. Initial estimation of the damage is supposed to be around 15 billion rupees, according to official sources. The state would send its report soon to get the funds sanctioned. When asked whether his party would align with the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) floated by actor Vijaykant, Vasan said "wait and see", adding that the Congress Government would take an appropriate decision at a suitable time. On our last full day in Cornwall the other month we decided on a visit to the Birds of Prey Centre, the other side of Newquay from where we were staying. It's a relatively small place, but even though neither my wife or I are especially fanatical about raptors we had a good time. The weather was looking a bit dodgy when we arrived, and it wasn't certain if the flight display would be able to proceed later on. We had nearly an hour, wandering around and looking at all the birds, before it started chucking it down. Instead of the display the owners decided to host an impromptu talk in one of the inside areas. I think I actually enjoyed this more than I would have the flight display - instead of fiddling with the camera all the time trying to get 'the shot' of a bird in flight we actually got to chat with the owners. It quickly became obvious how much they care for what they do and how much regard they have for the birds. They brought a couple of the birds in - a Harris Hawk and a Buzz

Met my college mate, Elaine Daly at KL Convention Centre last Saturday. It was fun to see her after 10 years since our graduation. She’s still very gorgeous and she was Miss Malaysia/Universe 2003. Some stuff I never knew about Elaine Daly (source)
Elaine Daly shot to prominence when she represented Malaysia at the 2003 Miss Universe pageant. As one of the top models in the country, she has represented international companies such as ZA Cosmetics and Nescafe in print and television advertisements. However, Elaine’s true passion lies in acting and she has secured lead roles in the comedy drama Getting Together, in the popular soap opera Astana Idaman, and on the big screen, in horror-thriller Di Ambang Misteri. As an emcee, Elaine has regularly hosted events for clients such as fashion label Seed, and international watchmakers, Jaeger Le Coultre.
