Karim Benzema notched a second-half brace to seal the deal for the guests, after Sydney Gouvou opened scoring in the 16th minute of play. It's a bitter pill for Rangers, as Walter Smith's side had played well for most of the group stage. Gers even beat today's opponent at the Stade de Gerland--by the identical 3-0 score--and could have clinched advancement as early as Nov. 27. Alas, Rangers ended up losing at lame duck VfB Stuttgart that day--the first and only points the German champions gained during the group stage campaign. The last time these group's played, Man U and Arsenal qualified for the round of 16. Today, a number of teams can join them:The key game today is probably Barcelona versus Lyon. After a slow start to the season Lyon have come on strong in recent weeks. They need to win today and hope that Rangers drop points at lame-duck Stuttgart--who themselves appear to have rediscovered their form, at least in the Bundesliga. All Barca need is a tie and they're through. If Rangers and Barca both win, it's over for Lyon. If Rangers win and Lyon tie, the French side are eliminated as well. Matchday Four's first batch of games failed to provide conclusions in the UEFA Champions League group stage, as both teams that could have advanced with victories only managed ties. Both Chelsea and Real Madrid were in the driver's seat but both played to scoreless ties on the road--Chelsea at Schalke 04 and Real at Olympiakos. Olympiakos' goalkeeper, Antonis Nikopolidis, was apparently the man of the match for the Greek side, according to uefa.com's report of the game. If you watched Euro 2004 at all you'll be well aware of Nikopolidis and his skills. Olympiakos were short several key defenders, but Real still weren't able to put one past Nikopolidis.The most shocking result from today was without a doubt Liverpool's 8-0 drubbing of Besiktas, a team they lost to a fortnight ago. Yesterday, Soccer Source predicted trouble for Shakhtar Donetsk and Liverpool, a potential struggle for Real Madrid and smooth sailing for Chelsea. Okay, I also thought Valencia would win their game. And actually, I didn't predict smooth sailing for Chelsea either, but I did say they wouldn't have the cakewalk Arsenal had. Then again, the U.S. men's basketball team at the '92 Olympics didn't quite have that kind of cakewalk. The continent's big guns were able to create some distance between themselves and the also-rans in their respective Champions League groups, thanks to a matchday where nearly everything went as scripted. The one mini surprise was Rangers scoreless draw to Barcelona at Ibrox. I say "mini" because Barca haven't played very well since the internationals break and were missing Deco for today's game. And it's not like Rangers won the game (that would have qualified as a "real" surprise). Nevertheless, lets give Gers their due: the club suddenly looks right at home amongst the continent's elite and their place in my top 25 is well deserved.
