Drug safety investigators have now confirmed "irregularities" in various batches of the drug, meaning that some pills contained more active chemicals than other pills. The main focus of the story by the U.S. press is the fact that the primary active ingredient in Heparin is made in a factory in China that has never been inspected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA hasn't even inspected 93% of the factories located around the world that manufacture the chemical ingredients used in pharmaceuticals sold in America. The fact that these dange

TOKYO (Reuters) - Finance Ministers from Japan and China did not discuss currencies on Sunday but they did talk about China-made toxic dumplings -- the latest thorn in often-rocky Sino-Japanese relations. Japanese Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga did not bring up currency issues in a bilateral meeting with Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren, a Japanese Finance Ministry official said. The two finance ministers met a day after the Group of Seven (G7) meeting of rich countries' financial leaders encouraged China to allow its yuan currency to appreciate more quickly in the statement released after their meeting in Tokyo. The two ministers in charge of the health of the economy -- but not food safety -- devoted considerable time to talking about dumplings imported from China and contaminated with pesticide. The incident made 10 Japanese people sick and sparked a food scare in Japan, becoming an emotive issue in sensitive Sino-Japanese relations. "We must cooperate to investigate

  • WITNESS - Reporting in the dark in icy New Year China
By John Ruwitch CHENZHOU, China (Reuters) - I stepped nervously from the over-crowded sleeper onto the frigid platform with no hotel, no contacts and no plan other than to find out what it was like to be in a city of 4 million in the midst of a 12-day blackout. The ride aboard the L44 train should have taken 4-1/2 hours. Across the snowbound country it had taken four times as long by the time we pulled into Chenzhou, only the second stop on a northbound slog to Beijing from the southern city of Guangzhou. Freezing rain and snow in late January coated much of south-central China with a thick layer of ice, contorting tree branches and crumpling some 1,000 high-tension power pylons. Chenzhou was at the heart of the freak winter disaster that halted transport and stranded millions in the days before the biggest holiday on the Chinese calendar, the Lunar Yew Year. The slush-lined streets were alive with activity, and I learned over the next few days that stoic resignation bolstered

Liaoning Provincial Higher People's Court upheld the judgment against Wang Zhendong, board chairman of Yingkou Donghua Trading (Group) Co. in northeastern Liaoning province. Wang was sentenced to death last February while 15 company managers were jailed for between five and 10 years by the Yingkou Intermediate People's Court. • Wild China weather kills 25, besieges heartland
By Lu Jianxin SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chaotic winter weather besieged China's business and farming heartland on Tuesday amid the country's worst power crisis, with one mountain-road accident blamed on snow killing 25 people ahead of a major holiday. Icy temperatures, snow and sleet blanketing much of central, eastern and southern China have crippled thousands of trucks and trains loaded with coal, food and passengers in the most severe winter weather seen there in 50 years. A bus plunged more than 40 metres from a snowy mountain road in the southwest province of Guizhou, Xinhua news agency said, the first known major accident caused by the freak weather. Elsewhere, about 24 people have died in recent weather-caused accidents, including three workers killed while trying to fix iced-up power lines. Premier Wen Jiabao visited stricken Hunan province in the south, Xinhua said. Wen first flew to neighbouring Hubei province, because Hunan's main airport was iced-in. The snow and bitin

The bus, carrying 38 people, plunged into a valley in the impoverished province of Guizhou, Xinhua news agency said. "Initial investigation blamed the tragedy on the unusual snowy weather in the region over the past days," Xinhua news agency said. BEIJING (Reuters) - There is little cause for optimism in China's fight to turn back the spreading deserts, with efforts so far failing to live up to expectations, a senior government official said on Thursday. Deserts, which cover a fifth of China, are spreading on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and parts of Inner Mongolia and Gansu, driven by decades of overgrazing and deforestation. "At present, China's desertification situation remains extremely serious," Deputy Forestry Minister Zhu Lieke told a news conference at the end of an international desertification conference co-hosted by the United Nations. "The threat is still very prominent, the spread of deserts in some areas is still severe. It is still very difficult to turn the deserts back and results from such efforts have been weak," he added. • China warns against rebound in leprosy cases
BEIJING (Reuters) - China is recording an annual average of more than 1,600 new leprosy cases and will spend $30 million this year to renovate leprosy villages which are home to thousands of people, the Health Ministry said on Thursday. Those diagnosed with leprosy in China were once exiled forcibly to remote "leper colonies", a practice which ended in the 1980s when a hugely successful multi-drug therapy was introduced. The country now has just a little more than 6,000 sufferers, drastically down from the estimated 500,000 in 1949 when the Communists took power, the official Health News said. "But every year there are still more than 1,600 new leprosy cases, and there are still people suffering relapses," the Health Ministry-run newspaper added. There were about 100,000 survivors who had been permanently disfigured and some 20,000 lived in leprosy villages, it said.
