  • Question of the Week: How do you handle the Potentials: Clients, Partners, and the Like.
(Sky Sister)There's always this awesome feeling when a potential client contacts me and compliments some aspect of the Studio portfolio. After basking in that for a moment, it's time to get to business. The business of screening. Many people are experts at screening their phone calls, but are they experts at screening clients? The Client is new in business. The Client is a seasoned businessperson. Or somewhere in the middle. The one thing they all have in common is that I don't know what is going through their head when I initially hear from them. Then there are the potential Partners - for both short and long-term projects. This is a newer issue to me because I am in the midst of expanding Sky Sister Studio. And with that comes an even deeper love affair with the concept of networking! So (in addition to person to person networking efforts) I join different networking sites and I have some really positive experiences. I've spoken to people who have become frustrated with the ne
  • How to find your first translation clients?
Copyright 2006 by Corinne McKay.Where to begin? I receive a lot of inquiries from people who would like to become translators, and most of these e-mails have something to do with finding those first few elusive translation clients. If you ask 100 translators how they got started in the business, you'll probably get at least 50 different answers. Some picked up the phone and started cold-calling, some turned an old business connection into a client, some volunteered, some went back to school, some were just in the right place at the right time. Following are some tips on how to break into the translation industry, depending on your interests and level of experience. As a freelance translator, your two basic categories of clients are translation agencies, companies that serve as a middleman between an end client and various freelance translators, and direct clients, where you work directly for the translation buyer with no middleman involved. Each of these approaches has its benefits a

  • The Art Of Negotiation (Part 2): Dealing With Difficult Clients
Clients are your golden tickets to attain success in your business or company, especially when they recurrently turn to you for business dealings. On the contrary, they can also be one of your greatest hurdles. This is more so when they project a hard-to-please attitude and get very demanding towards you. Your job right now is to cross this hurdle!Below are the seven steps to take when dealing with difficult clients:Step 1:Pay careful attention to your clients’ criticisms and keep your cool when asking them questions. By doing so, you can easily determine the likes and dislikes of your clients and think of what you can do to meet their needs.Step 2:Do not intervene when your clients are talking, unless they become a little out of hand with their words. It pays to listen to them to the fullest. If they get quite harsh, courteously ask them to keep their cool and speak in a more calmly manner.Step 3:Note down the discussions you had with difficult clients and the measures you have under

  • Using a blog to solicit ideas from your clients
One of the strategies that businesses use to create and maintain a blog is to solicit ideas from their current clients and potential customers. Dell recently announced that they are going to use their blog Direct2Dell to receive topics and ideas from the Linux community on Red Hat. Dell started offering Linux on the computer systems and they want the users of Linux to share information and ideas so they can tailor their offerings to them. This is great for their business because they get to hear from the people who use Linux each and every day. This type of direct feedback will allow Dell to stay one step ahead of their competition and allow them to penetrate the market in a very unique way. If you’re using a blog for your business, this is an extremely effective way to communicate with your audience and provide the products or services that they need. It reduces market study and focus groups dramatically because these people volunteer their personal experience and knowledge. U

  • Firing Your Clients
Recently, I had a client whom I had a number of times would like to say to him: "Sorry S...., I would like to stop doing business with you!" This is a client who constantly raise his voice at you and calls you every 30 mins. Calls you on the weekend and always says the big Fxxx & Bullshit words. In fact, he is happy with our service but because he is such an inconsiderate and a rude man; it makes it so difficult to do business with him. This is one client whom I think deserves to be on a 'firing' list. Here are 11 more that you and I if we come across should definitely fire:THE DISILLUSIONED consistently expresses disappointment with your work even though it is of good quality and conforms to spec. A client who is constitutionally incapable of appreciating your work is not a client you should be involved with.THE SUSPICIOUS consistently expresses a lack of trust, disdain for your work, or questions your integrity. A client who is constitutionally incapable of trusting in your expertise
