  • Platinum at historic high on supply concerns
By Lewa Pardomuan SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Platinum hit another record high on Monday on lingering supply concerns in South Africa, which produces four-fifths of the world's supply of the metal, while gold firmed near an historic high. Platinum has gained nearly 25 percent so far this year after power shortages disrupted mining in South Africa, triggering worries about a bigger market deficit for 2008. The metal is used in jewellery and auto catalysts to clean exhaust fumes. Platinum hit a bid high of $1,887 an ounce, up from $1,880/1,888 late in New York on Friday, lifting sister metal palladium to its highest in six years. Uncertainties in the dollar's outlook amid the turmoil in credit markets and volatile stock markets have also encouraged investors to buy platinum as well as gold, silver and palladium. "Gold might hit $1,000 and platinum might hit $2,000 by the end of the first quarter," said William Kwan, a dealer at Phillip Futures in Singapore. "It may

  • NATO struggles for unity amid Afghan troop concerns
By Patrick Lannin and Sue Pleming VILNIUS/KABUL (Reuters) - NATO struggled to maintain unity over the war in Afghanistan on Thursday after the United States raised concerns that some members were not willing to let their troops "fight and die" to achieve victory. On a visit to troops fighting the Taliban, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice kept up the pressure on reluctant allies to share the combat burden. A first round of talks among NATO defence ministers in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius yielded no formal offers of troops. However, a government spokesman in Paris said France was considering a possible new deployment. "Frankly, I hope there will be more troop contributions and there needs to be more Afghan forces," Rice told reporters travelling with her on the flight from London with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Defense Secretary Robert Gates laid bare U.S. concern about NATO on Wednesday when he said the alliance could split into

  • Importance Of Life Insurance When It Concerns Mortgage
Whole life insurance is known as full life coverage insurance policy. For mortgage debt coverage, life insurance policy is not necessary when you buy your home. The most suitable coverage for home insurance is affordable term life insurance. One of the biggest financial decisions in anyone's life revolves around building a home. This puts a great strain on your financial status and thus getting a home mortgage life insurance policy might seem to be a good idea.Whole term life insurance is very common these days. Most of the homebuyers already own this policy to cover their mortgage requirements and it can be repaid at the time of owner death. Laser resurfacing, also known as lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization, is a fairly recently developed treatment that reduces facial wrinkles and corrects skin irregularities like blemishes or acne scars. Short, concentrated pulsating light beams remove and resurface skin layer by layer, for a precise finish and a smoother, tighter appearance. There are two types of lasers most commonly used, known as carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing and erbium laser resurfacing. In both types of treatments, the laser acts as a vaporizer on superficial, damaged skin cells, reducing patient risk by limiting how much heat is absorbed by the skin.CO2 Laser ResurfacingToday’s CO2 laser resurfacing uses a scanning pattern of ‘ultrapulsed’ energy (very short pulsed light energy) or continuous light beams to treat wrinkles, scars, warts, birthmarks, enlarged oil glands, skin cancer and other skin conditions. The CO2 laser precisely removes thin layers of skin with the added benefit of minim
  • OiL PRICES: Is decline on concerns about economic growth
Oil futures gave up earlier gains and settled lower today as concerns about the economy overrode forecasts that OPEC oil shipments were falling. In particular, energy investors were shaken by today's Conference Board report that its index of leading indicators dropped 0.4 percent in November to the lowest level in more than two years, said James Cordier, president of Liberty Trading Group in Tampa, Fla. Declines in the index tend to precede economic slowdowns or recessions."That is basically fulfilling what people are fearing," Cordier said.Energy traders worry that a slowing economy will mean reduced demand for oil and gasoline.Earlier in the day prices jumped $1 a barrel after Dow Jones Newswires reported that Oil Movements, a British tanker tracking firm, said it expects crude shipments from Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will fall by 230,000 barrels a day to 24.2 million barrels a day during the four weeks ending Jan. 5. The report reversed earlier Oil Movements f

  • Indonesia: Muslim values in line with environmental concerns, say scholars
AKI - Scholars who met in the Indonesian capital Jakarta to discuss Islam and the environment, have concluded that Muslim values support Indonesia's efforts to face its environmental challenges. The dialogue was held on Wednesday at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) in cooperation with the British Embassy in Jakarta. The director of the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences (IFEES) in England, Fazlun M. Khalid, said that in contrast to common misperceptions, Islam was more than a ritualistic religion; Islam also provided universal values that underlined the importance of maintaining a balanced interaction with nature. He said Islamic teachings helped position human beings as the khalifah or administrative deputies of God on earth."Ulemas in Indonesia are way ahead ... in translating the sharia into fatwa (religious edicts)," he said. • U.S. Open pressure, Butch Harmon's nerve-busters, Ogilvy's concerns and is this Mickelson's year?
Click here to listen.U.S. Open week is one of the most highly anticipated times of the year for both professional golfers and fans alike. Where the Masters is like a "spring fever" wake-up call to all golfers, this second major of the season has the PGA Tour pros in fine form, ready to take on all competitors as well as a golf course which proves to be a real "tester".Geoff Ogilvy related a bit of his concern for both the greens and longer holes at Oakmont in a recent pre-tournament interview. Last year's winner talked in particular about both the six hundred yard par-fives as well as the long par-three eighth hole. The interview sparked interest in a discussion on how the amateur should tackle the longer par-three's through practical course management.
