JAKARTA (Reuters) - A stampede at a rock concert in Indonesia's West Java province killed 10 people and injured several, police said on Sunday. Hundreds of fans had packed a hall to watch a performance by a little known punk rock band in the city of Bandung when the stampede began on Saturday night, said Brigadier Nano Kartono, a local police officer. Most of the dead were teenagers, he said. Bandung city police chief Bambang Suparsono said 15 concert organisers had been questioned, the state-run news agency Antara reported. "We received information that before the crush that ended with deaths, concert organizers distributed free drinks. There was a smell of alcohol," Antara quoted him as saying. Indonesia has seen a number of deadly stampede at concerts in recent years.

“Wow.” I thought as I arrived to see TOOL last night (November 19, 2007) at the Tulsa Convention Center. The traffic and parking wasn’t atrocious but police officers were lined up at the door: We had to be frisked before going in. Thoroughly frisked. Typically only attending small venue shows, I had never been frisked before. But that was understandable and fine. The Dimebag tragedy was one too many. I took my seat and shortly after 8, TransAm (a band I had never heard of before) graced the stage. I’m not going to outright say those guys sucked, but they were unimpressive. Their sound was loud and obnoxious synth pop; the vocals were yelled and annoyingly digitalized. However, it could just be that their type of music is the kind that does not work well live. They may sound good on record, and since I’m into some synth-pop I'd be willing to give them another chance. TransAm played about 5 songs and left behind a nonchalant crowd. I attended a Neil Young concert at the brand new, gleaming, post-modern, purple neon-accented Nokia Theater, which opened last month in downtown Los Angeles. I’ll post an astrological concert review very soon, but was struck with a couple of Pluto in Capricorn observations about the venue:It’s named after a cell phone company. One huge wall inside the theater lobby displayed different models of Nokia phones. It was like walking into a very large mobile phone store. Corporations are taking over the world. I know this is not exactly breaking news, but I was struck with how in-your-face it’s become.The security was very tight.
