The police department's chaplain, Father Robert Osborne of the local St. Peter Catholic Church, said law enforcers from several agencies quickly voiced anguish to him over the tragedy. "They're all just so sad, shocked by this," Osborne said. "This doesn't happen in Kirkwood."
Well Father, it pains me deeply to have to tell you that in our gun-loving country with its gun-loving mentality, it appears that it DOES happen in your beloved Kirkwood, as well as in many other cities and towns all over America. It is long past time for us to address this culture, and those who've been reading my website, already know what I think should occur. READ ABOUT THIS HERE

Before City Council sinks $100 million dollars into a streetcar line, they should implement a virtually no-cost painted line usability study. This would be a cost-effective way to gauge initial ridership, and the results could bolster the arguments either for or against the plan—based on how many people utilize the line.

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Russian human rights campaigners have launched legal action against their own government for closing down the British Council's regional offices, an activist told Reuters on Wednesday. Last week Russia demanded the British cultural body close its two regional offices in Saint Petersburg and the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, which it said were operating illegally. British diplomats say Russia's move against the Council was part of a feud that has been simmering since Kremlin critic and emigre Alexander Litvinenko was killed in London by radiation poisoning in 2006. "I brought the suit in the Syktyvkar city court today. We believe that none of the Russian foreign ministry complaints announced in its demarche against the British Council had any legal grounds," Ernest Mezak, of the Memorial human rights group in the northern Russian republic of Komi, told Reuters. Russian courts rarely hand down rulings against the government. Komi, an o

7 of the Eleventh Month 5768Barak, Yesha Leaders Agree to Destroy Jewish Towns7 Shevat 5768 / January 14, 2008 10:44 AM(IsraelNN.com) Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Yesha leaders have reportedly reached an agreement for the non-violent eviction of hundreds of residents from their homes in 26 Jewish communities throughout Judea and Samaria.According to the report in the Hebrew-language Haaretz daily, Barak has agreed to approve building and infrastructure permits frozen by the government in response to US pressure to drive Jews out of Yesha, as compensation for the non-violent abandonment of certain Jewish towns. In addition, victims of the eviction would be permitted to move to other Jewish communities in the area. Sources in Barak's office said the Yesha Council "knows" that the Supreme Court deal is expected to order IDF soldiers to tear down the communities, and that the deal is intended to prevent violence between residents and eviction forces. How many more "deals" can the gover
Renewed Call For Disabilities Legislation:
By Rolanda Epstein -
Nassau, Bahamas:
The Bahamas National Council For The Disabled is hoping the government comes through and brings legislation to parliament this year, which would protect the rights of people with disabilities in The Bahamas.
In the Speech from the Throne last May, the new government promised a sustained campaign of awareness aimed at educating the public on the rights of the disabled.
The government said early attention will also be given to the completion of the National Disability Register.
Council President Sherman Smith said Friday the Council is hopeful that legislation will soon be passed.
He said such legislation would prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of life, including civil rights, employment, education, housing, goods, facilities and services, including health, access to justice and access to transportation.

Privy Council Sitting In Bahamas For Second Time -
By TOSHEENA ROBINSON-BLAIR:
Nassau, Bahamas:
With much pomp and pageantry, the country on Monday welcomed the U.K.-based Privy Council to The Bahamas before the law lords got down to the business of hearing the first case – a murder appeal – on their agenda while here.
On Monday, the Judicial Committee dealt with murder convict Quincy Todd’s appeal of his conviction. The delay in appeal was a result of Todd’s difficulty to obtain legal representation.
Todd was found guilty of the 1994 murder of Venette Bellizaire.
He was convicted on February 23, 1998 of the murder of the young Haitian woman and sentenced to death. It is reported that he picked up Bellizaire from a bus stop in downtown Freeport on August 25, 1994 in a grey Nissan Sunny.
The victim was never seen alive again.
The court heard that on September 21, 1994, police interviewed him and he eventually directed them to an area where skeletal remains, clothing, a
Mr. John Williams
Director of Elections
Hamilton County Board of Elections
Dear Mr. Williams:
I notice that the “Certified Amended Official Results—Cumulative Report,” as listed on the BOE website http://www.hamilton-co.org/BOE, has some unexpected differences with the “Official Final Results—Cumulative Report” that had been posted until recently. Some totals went up, while others went down. There is no explanation that I can find on the website to explain the change or why they were amended in the first place.

You'd have thought the burghers of Rotherham would have been delighted: Dolly Parton has chosen their town to be the site of the UK launch of her reading scheme, the Imagination Library. The council has arranged a small jolly for the elected few, with a bit of nosebag and a chance to shake the hand of Ms Parton. Not everyone, though, is thrilled: Tony Mannion, who sits on the council as an independent, is fuming that Dolly is delaying the start of council business by an hour:I’m boycotting the lunch and I am outraged that democracy is being put on hold because of a celebrity,” Mr Mannion told The Times. “I have nothing against Dolly Parton. Not that I know much about her except that she sang 9 to 5. That’s about the top and bottom of my knowledge. And I think the literacy scheme is a good idea. My objection is over the timing. We have vital business to discuss, for example the siting of a power station in the middle of a nature reserve. And we have few enough council meetings as

Downtown’s Christ Church is famous for its political forums, which happen throughout the year and not just during election season. Recently, they invited the non-incumbents to speak for about five minutes each. We’ve got the exclusive content, giving you a chance to see these politicians speaking in their natural habitat—in a room full of voters—and not directly to the camera in a commercial. Check the link below to see all the non-incumbents who showed up do their thing! (You can find all the videos through this YouTube playlist.)
KIEV, Ukraine -- Rarely have so many stolen so much so quickly. As the country was preoccupied by parliamentary elections, Kyiv city council thought nobody would notice and pushed through hundreds of land transfers on Oct. 1.

Justin Jeffre’s city council campaign has quietly earned a diverse and noteworthy collection of endorsements.
Bill Joiner, a Democratic activist who has been a vocal opponent of Jeff Berding, has endorsed Jeffre. “I have been a loyal Democrat for many years because I believe in traditional Democratic values,” explained Joiner. “I recognize that not every Democrat lives up to those values, and there are others who are not Democrats but who, despite their party labels, embrace those Democratic values. I believe Justin Jeffre is one of those persons, and I am happy to endorse his candidacy for City Council.”
Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune met this afternoon with Justin Jeffre and other members of the Southwest Ohio Green Party, attempting to gain the support of progressives for his nearly billion dollar jail proposal.
Now that Justin Jeffre has announced he is running for City Council, people keep asking for more information about his particular platform. So, in the event that you have not found it yet, be sure to check out his new campaign web page. More position statements and policy suggestions will be added as campaign season progresses!

City Council Candidate George Zamary gets ready for a loss.
Awkwardly contrived campaign acronyms should never suffice for a political platform for a high profile office like Cincinnati City Council. But apparently they didn’t teach that one to George Zamary when he want to law school. That must be why his campaign web page has a lame platform based on the idea that Cincinnati should “SOAR to new heights.”
You can now invest even more money into our corrupt elections than before and that means better returns for the wealthy few. Money is a corrupting influence in politics. It is contempt for democracy. It is nothing more than legalized bribery and an elaborate money laundering scheme.

This past Saturday at the Buzz Barbecue, several city council candidates were present talking to voters and collecting signatures so that they may get on the ballot to run for Cincinnati City Council. I took this opportunity to approach several of the candidates and ask them about their positions on the sales tax petition recently headed by the Cincinnati Branch of the NAACP and supported by a broad coalition of other organizations.
The first person I asked was Minette Cooper, who I supported during her second term of Council ten years ago (but I won’t support this coming election). Former Councilmember Cooper stated that she did not have a problem with people circulating and signing the petitions, however, she stated that she was advised not to answer any questions concerning her position on the sales tax petition.
The second person I asked was another former Councilmember, Sam Malone. For Councilman Malone stated that he did not t
The rather bizarre line-up for Haywards Heath's three-day Big Culture Show - The Feeling, a bloke dressed up as Bob The Builder, and Chas and Dave - didn't quite capture anyone's imagination and now locals are trying to find out who signed off on the flop, which left a £150,000 loss to be made good by pubic funds:Organisers said they were "extremely disappointed" and have blamed bad weather for the lack of takings. But Councillor Paddy Henry, the sole Labour representative on the Tory-led council, said the three-day event was a "total waste" and that heads should roll.He said: "If you worked for a private company and you lost £150,000 you'd be out the door. When you're bolstered and feather bedded by council tax money it seems you can just squander it, no questions asked."Someone should throw themselves on their sword for this."The organisers, though, are bullish:Paul Squires, head of leisure and well being, said the loss represented less than one per cent of his £17 million bud

Recently, I sent this letter to the Department of Building and Inspections about 3CDC’s LED screen at Fountain Square. It appears that screen, which is really an outdoor advertising sign, violates portions of the Cincinnati Municipal Code. Turns out there is not a violation—and in the legalities of the LED screen even more shocking questions are uncovered.
Here is a copy of the notwithstanding ordinance granted to 3CDC, voted on unanimously by the current City Council:
I am most concerned about Section 4 of this ordinance, which reads:
That this ordinance is an emergency measure necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health, safety and general welfare and shall, subject to the terms of Article II, Section 6 of the Charter, be effective immediately. The reason for the emergency is the immediate need to make the necessary preparations to ensure the proper and safe installation of the LED screen.

Council OK's agreement for Central Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant Town Council passed final reading of a development agreement that would create a mixed-use plan in the heart of Mount Pleasant. The town last week had agreed to defer final reading on the Central Mount Pleasant project until today at the developers’ request for more time to complete the development agreement.
Central Mount Pleasant is a 110-acre project proposed by Mount Pleasant-based McAlister Development Co. and joint venture partner Greystar Real Estate Partners. The development would include a master-planned downtown area with mixed residential uses, shops and restaurants, a new Whitesides Elementary School along with parks, lakes and canals.
The planned development is on a tract between Hungryneck Boulevard and Rifle Range Road and would have about 719 residential units, including apartments and single-family homes, with about 34 acres reserved for commercial use. The development agreement included annexatio
