PARIS (Reuters) - The vast majority of French people believe the media has gone over the top with its coverage of President Nicolas Sarkozy's romantic escapades, an opinion poll published on Wednesday said. The TNS Sofres poll for La Croix daily said 93 percent of people thought the media had dedicated too much space to Sarkozy's private life, while 52 percent thought too much space was given to covering his political actions. Sarkozy has rarely been off the front pages of newspapers and celebrity magazines in recent months following his divorce from his second wife Cecilia in October and his subsequent liaison with supermodel-turned pop singer, Carla Bruni. The president's own popularity ratings have fallen sharply over the past two months, with voters apparently turned off by the wall-to-wall coverage of his love life and anxious for more action to combat their daily economic travails. But despite their disapproval, La Croix said stories about the French president were clearl

I just wanted to let readers know that I have been hired to write two articles covering the New Hampshire primary for a website called Veracifier. The first article has been posted on the site, it is called “Dispatch From New Hampshire“. I ask any one who is interested to check it out. The second [...]
Go Bucks! I actually wanted to see Oklahoma as the opponent. That would've been some real smash-mouth football. I hope the other Big 10 teams in bowls make the Big 10 proud. Especially those playing SEC teams. I am so sick of those SEC morons talking about speed. The Big 10 can't be too slow because an awful lot of them go on to play in the NFL. Last year, 2 out 3 Big 10 teams beat SEC teams. Here's a round up of Big 10 bowl games. Illinois vs USC in the Rose Bowl Honestly; I think the only way Illinois can win this is if they win a shootout. USC has a tough defense, Illinois defense...not so good. Illinois offense is really good, USC offense is ok. Prediction: Illinois 27 USC 24 Final: USC 49 - Illinois 17 Michigan State vs Boston College in the Champ Sports Bowl Eh, depends on which Michigan State team shows up. Prediction: Even Final: BC 24 - MSU 21 Purdue vs Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl Lets skip to the prediction Prediction: Purdue
The Red Wings do all the right things, yet continue to fly under the Detroit sports radar. I'm guilty as the next guy, as I watched very little of last night's big win over the resurgent Blues. Personally, I'm still in a football mindset. I was totally sucked into the highly entertaining basketball game on field turf that was the Motor City Bowl. Go Chips!Out of the 4 pro sports teams in town, the Wings are 4th, and falling. For example, it was announced yesterday that the Red Wings signed the best defenseman in hockey, the odds on favorite to win another Norris Trophy, a 1st ballot hall of fame lock, and team captain, the great Niklas Lidstrom, to a 2 year contract extension.Lidstrom represents all that is right with sports, top 5 in his position all-time, who will rank with the like of Howe, Yzerman, Lindsay, Sawchuck, Abel, and Delvecchio in the pantheon of Wings greats, yet his signing created less buzz in Detroit as the aforementioned Motor City Bowl. The hot topic on sports tal
Having affordable insurance and comprehensive coverage is a cornerstone of the PCLC Value Chain. Nevertheless, one of the issues generating the greatest debate concerns universal health coverage (i.e., healthcare for all), along with the related issue of "personal responsibility." The argument tends to center on whether the young and the healthy should help pay for care that older and ill persons need, how much they should pay, and the degree of responsibility people have for staying healthy and paying for their care when they get sick. In an earlier series of posts, I made the case that all Americans are worthy of health insurance, and that personal responsibility is a complex issue we must address, but for which there are no quick fixes.Well, I recently corresponded with two individuals who have ideas about this topic, which I present below.Person 1 wrote: Just an idea, but since some here are so determined that Health Care for Everyone should be equal (but not equally paid for) and

Call me an old curmudgeon, but I find the furor over Joe Torre's firing/resignation/rejection/whatever, absolutely over the top ridiculous. It's the media's 24/7 news cycle at it's worst.20 years ago, this would not have been the lead story in any sort of media. 10 years ago, ditto. It would have been a few paragraph long wire story on page 2 of the sports section. But In 2007? The Joe Torre presser is being broadcast coast-to-coast. It's become a national nightmare! What will happen to poor Joe?Yet the MSM wonders why there is such a backlash in the "Flyover states" about an east coast bias?Any other big league manager is fired/resigns/whatever, it's a 30 spot on Sportscenter. Well, if it's KC or Pittsburgh, it's probably 15 seconds...If anyone at the worldwide leader is reading, the rest of the nation (Save for possibly Boston, as they have that symbiotic love/hate relationship with NYC), doesn't care that the Yankees gave Joe Torre the bum's rush out the door. Seriously, we don't!
Implants have been around for years, but until recently, insurance companies have considered them cosmetic in nature and did not have dental insurance for implants coverage. Many people had to find alternative means for teeth replacement or pay for the expense out of their own pocket.Dental implants are now considered an alternative to replacing all the teeth in the mouth with a bridge or false teeth. If you have dental insurance for implant coverage, then you might find this procedure a better way to replace a few teeth rather than the traditional ways. Although the insurance coverage you have today, might caver implants, you will still some out of pocket expenses due to some things required are not covered.* What Is a Dental Implant- a dental implant is where a stainless steel screw is implanted in the gum and the tooth is then attached. It can be done for one or more teeth that need replacing.Dental Insurance For Implants Is Better Than Dentures Or Bridges Because the implants stay

This was recently submitted to the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau. For a “settlement,” I have requested a front page Sunday story about how to reduce violence in our community, self-inflicted or otherwise.
On Sunday, June 24th, The Cincinnati Enquirer ran a front page story about suicide. (Find it online here: http://tinyurl.com/2zhbdd ) This violates all accepted practices regarding journalism ethics. For example, you can find the Wolrd Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for media handling of suicide here: http://tinyurl.com/29xmer
Specifically, the WHO warns to avoid front page news coverage, to avoid discussing methods used, and to avoid discussing locations. Doing things like this increases the number of “copycat suicides,” which has long been documented as a serious threat when media decides to break commonly accepted guidelines for writing about suicide.
Additionally, the Enquirer failed to provide clear inform
A judge ruled Monday in favor of a dry cleaner that was sued for $54 million over a missing pair of pants.
The man above, Roy L. Pearson (an administrative law judge), originally sought $67 million from the owners of the dry cleaning establishment that he frequented, claiming they lost a pair of expensive pants from a suit, then tried to give him a pair of charcoal gray pants that he claimed were not his. The sum of his lawsuit was created by him adding up years of alleged law violations and almost $2 million in common law fraud claims.
In the end, District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled that he did not have enough evidence to prove that the pants were not his, and that his allegations over a sign saying “Satisfaction Guaranteed” was false advertisement were not in line with how people should consider such statements from businesses.
“A reasonable consumer would not interpret ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed’ to me
This week’s CityBeat will be a collector’s item for any fan of The Cincinnati Beacon (in fact, maybe I should make myself available in public to autograph copies!). Two stories touch on our efforts here with our web site and our new print newspaper—with Justin Jeffre even making the front cover! Thank you, CityBeat! Here are some excerpts and some additional thoughts.
Firstly, here is a fantastic story by veteran newsman Ben Kaufman about how we have ventured into print news publishing. I think the story is significant for a number of reasons, the most obvious of which is that I think we may be the first single blog to turn into a newspaper, and therefore Ben Kaufman has the print scoop on this national (or even international) story!
OK… maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. But here are some details that I’d like to cast in a different perspective. From Kaufman’s article:

If you haven't seen it, check out the Devlin Surf Scoter 26' article on page 148 of the latest PassageMaker Magazine (August 2007). Its a good writeup of a couple who had a Surf Scoter built and the writer gives a nice review, including a short test cruise.
It's nice to see the mainstream press covering the smaller (and potentially homebuilt) cruising boats instead of just the large trawlers and/or go-fasts.
Does anybody else remember this story from the San Diego Union-Tribune on June 8, 2004?By Bill CenterKevin Towers couldn’t hide his delight. "This is a great story," the Padres general manager said yesterday after introducing Mission Bay High shortstop/pitcher Matt Bush as the No. 1 pick of baseball's 2004 draft. And the story started with a report in this newspaper Friday. At the time, Padres director of scouting Bill Gayton was assessing the three collegiate frontrunners for the Padres' No. 1 pick in the draft – right-handed pitchers Jered Weaver of Long Beach State and Jeff Niemann of Rice and Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew. Gayton was asked about Matt Bush. "We've talked about Bush," said Gayton. "We love him." When Bush read that quote Friday morning, a light went on. "I've always loved the Padres," said Bush. "If they love me . . . "Bush put in a call to one of his advisers, Ken Felder. "I asked Ken that, off what I read in the newspaper, would it be OK if I called
