  • Planemakers look to Asia but credit crisis looms
A lack of major orders at the Singapore Airshow could point to a deeper than predicted cyclical downturn for planemakers already smarting from delivery delays on new aircraft.Manufacturers expect fewer orders in 2008, as the industry comes off a record year for sales and enters a period of ramped up production. Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday that its orders will halve to around 700 from a record 1,341 orders last year.Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) does not give forecasts, but said it expects orders to exceed the 475-480 planes it is targeting to deliver to customers this year. But demand for new aircraft could be hit more than the Europe-based Airbus and U.S. rival Boeing expect, as a growing global credit crisis curbs airlines' ability to finance purchases, and causes a drop in premium and business travel."Just like in the home mortgage sector, airlines need to put more equity into financing aircrafts. Anybody who goes for a loan has three things in mind- his financial requirements get fulfilled, he gets loan at a low APR, and the deal involves less risk for him. Risk is measured by the presence or absence of asset as collateral. Unsecured loans are popular because the borrowers need not pledge any asset in lieu of getting the loan. However, absence of security increases the risk for the lenders. He can take legal action against the borrower, should the latter default on the loan repayment. However, the case usually takes a long time to be settled. So, the lender covers the risk by charging high APR on unsecured loans. The amount that can be availed as unsecured loans is less as well. So, if you need finances for a major project like buying a house, secured loans will serve you better.People generally look for cheap unsecured loans in the market. But

  • Wall St drops as AIG fuels credit worries
By Kristina Cooke NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Monday on renewed worries about credit losses after insurer American International Group Inc received a rebuke from its auditors for how it valued some credit derivatives. The disclosure cast doubt on AIG's past contention that the world's largest insurer didn't face major problems stemming from the credit crisis that has slammed other financial institutions. Shares of AIG fell 11.2 percent to $45, a five-year low and its worst one-day percentage drop since the 1987 stock market crash. That dragged on shares of other financial companies, with the S&P financials index down 2.6 percent. Economic jitters persisted after finance leaders from the Group of Seven major economies said during the weekend problems in the U.S. housing market may lead to worsening conditions as debt-laden banks clamp down on credit. "The concerns about AIG are affecting the financials and are clearly having a negative effect on sentiment,
