  • Planemakers look to Asia but credit crisis looms
A lack of major orders at the Singapore Airshow could point to a deeper than predicted cyclical downturn for planemakers already smarting from delivery delays on new aircraft.Manufacturers expect fewer orders in 2008, as the industry comes off a record year for sales and enters a period of ramped up production. Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday that its orders will halve to around 700 from a record 1,341 orders last year.Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) does not give forecasts, but said it expects orders to exceed the 475-480 planes it is targeting to deliver to customers this year. But demand for new aircraft could be hit more than the Europe-based Airbus and U.S. rival Boeing expect, as a growing global credit crisis curbs airlines' ability to finance purchases, and causes a drop in premium and business travel."Just like in the home mortgage sector, airlines need to put more equity into financing aircrafts. This will have a cash strain on the airline i

  • Somalia is worst humanitarian crisis - U.N. official
LONDON (Reuters) - High levels of malnutrition and the difficulties of delivering aid make Somalia the world's most pressing humanitarian crisis, the U.N. refugee agency's representative there said on Tuesday. More than 1 million people have fled their homes in Somalia, which is convulsed by fighting between Ethiopian-backed government forces, Islamist insurgents and an assortment of warlords. "I've never seen anything like Somalia before," Guillermo Bettocchi, representative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said during a visit to London. "The situation is very severe. It is the most pressing humanitarian emergency in the world today -- even worse than Darfur," he told reporters, referring to the war in western Sudan, which has driven 2.5 million from their homes. A bomb attack which killed three foreign aid workers in Somalia on Monday underlined the difficulty in delivering aid in the anarchic country that has been wracked by clan violence for 17 y
  • Fix the economy, crisis weary Thais tell new govt
By Orathai Sriring BANGKOK (Reuters) - Rampai Krongtong is frustrated. The 32-year-old Bangkok store clerk is paying more for food and transport, but she doesn't expect a pay rise this year because the economy is sluggish. And prices could well continue to rise. Her frustration is shared by other Thais, underlining how the economy is the number one challenge for a new coalition government due to take power next month. "It's very, very tough," Rampai, who earns 5,000 baht ($150) a month, said. "Everything is more expensive from goods to gas. But we still earn the same or even less because the economy is bad." "We don't know how we can survive. The government has to fix the problem quickly or we're dead," she told Reuters. After nearly two years of political strife, a bloodless coup and policies that scared foreign investors away, some analysts expect the economy to grow just 4 percent this year, which would be the weakest pace since 2

  • DAVOS - Business leaders appeal for crisis leadership
By Natsuko Waki and Ben Hirschler DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Business leaders rattled by a slump in global markets urged the U.S. and other central banks on Wednesday to get a grip on the global economy and some accused the Federal Reserve of losing its nerve. With share prices tumbling again despite an emergency U.S. interest rate cut on Tuesday to counter fears of recession, top executives expressed alarm at an annual gathering in the Swiss resort of Davos. "Central banks have lost control," said financier George Soros, echoing the concerns of many of the more than 2,000 business and political leaders arriving in the snow-clad mountain town for the World Economic Forum meeting. In a debate on the U.S. economy, 59 percent of participants agreed with a motion that central bankers had lost control. Another panel agreed a lack of international economic policy coordination was the biggest risk to the world economy in 2008. Top Washington officials sought t
  • Families seek loved ones lost in Kenya crisis
By Daniel Wallis ELDORET, Kenya (Reuters) When a mob of his neighbours tried to kill Philip Nderitu, he ran from his home in western Kenya to sleep outside a police station. He knew his family would be spared the rocks and machetes of his attackers because his wife was a Luhya, a tribe seen as pro-opposition. But their home was ransacked as post-election violence convulsed the country's lush Rift Valley after the Dec. 27 polls, and he had no idea where his loved ones had fled. Almost a month later, they were reunited. "I am so happy," the 48-year-old night guard said, hugging his five sons after Red Cross workers brought them together at a camp for nearly 13,000 people uprooted by the bloodshed. The displaced here, like Nderitu, are members of President Mwai Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe, chased out of villages around Eldoret town by gangs of youths from the Kalenjin tribe they call "warriors". Hundreds of families were split up in the chaos. As Nderitu's fami
  • Identity Crisis
Wanna know what really irks me? The latest public radio ads I keep hearing on TV. They are set to corny country music, trying to be humorous about something that is not humorous at all. In the ad, a guy sings a song, telling why he is now working at a cheap diner trying to scrape by-- because he didn't protect his identity and it was stolen... and he was robbed out of his skin. So, he works three lousy jobs trying to build his life back again.Hardy har har! So funny! The ad ends with the government telling you how you really should protect your identity more. Then I read stories like this one:Personal information on about 650,000 customers of J.C. Penney and up to 100 other retailers could be compromised after a computer tape went missing. GE Money, which handles credit card operations for Penney and many other retailers, said Thursday night that the missing information includes Social Security numbers for about 150,000 people. The information was on a backup computer tape that was disco

  • Elections could increase political crisis in Pakistan: Report
The general elections in Pakistan due on February 18 could either dampen tensions and set the country on a path towards stabilisation, or exacerbate a long-running political crisis, a report released by the Oxford Analytica has said.   The international consulting firm states that the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto last month forced the opposition parties to cooperate on strategy with regards to the election. However, events since have also stoked provincial, ethnic and political divides.   In the aftermath of Benazir’s death, her home province of Sindh suffered the most unrest, where it was tinged with provincial and ethnic animosities. Hundreds of bank branches, as well as railway bridges, stations and trains were destroyed.   According to the report, the riots in Sindh had crowds shouting anti-Pakistan and anti-Punjab slogans while the properties of non-Sindhis were also attacked.   In Punjab, crowds directed their anger towards the

  • Tehran's Most Valuable Partner: The Role of Germany in the Iranian "Nuclear Crisis"
As one of Iran’s most important trading and negotiating partners, Germany plays a significant role in shaping European and international public opinion. Given Berlin’s growing influence in international relations, and its ties with the various stages of negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear crisis, the world has become accustomed to adding Germany to the five permanent members of the Security Council in determining the process and fate of the Iranian nuclear case.Germany, under the leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel, is in alliance with the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. But it differs on the methods. While Washington places “all options on the table,” Berlin excludes a military solution to protect its interests in Iran. The Iranian-German relations are some of the oldest bilateral relations in modern history. There is no doubt that market conditions are deteriorating rapidly and financials are taking it on the chin.Fear now dominates the marketplace. Financial-services stocks have fallen by 15% over the past three months, as measured by the S&P Financial Services Index. • Credit crisis: Long road to recovery
It's six months into the credit crunch and investors are still shaken. Businesses and households should get ready to hunker down in '08.By Grace Wong, CNNMoney.com staff writerLONDON (CNNMoney.com) -- A new year, a new start. For the credit markets, that's wishful thinking.Nearly six months since the credit crunch started, the situation is still grim - and there are few encouraging signs, which doesn't bode well for businesses and households next year.Toxic debt keeps cropping up on bank balance sheets. The housing slump still hasn't found a bottom, and investors remain skittish. Market watchers expect the credit environment to remain challenging into the better part of 2008. That will take a toll on corporate profits and squeeze American consumers, not to mention put a drag on economic growth."We're pretty close to a point where the capital markets fail to function properly," said John Addeo, a high-yield fund manager at MFS Investments. Connoisseurs could be in for a surprise this year, and they may not be alone. Small brewers from Australia to Oregon face the daunting prospect of tweaking their recipes or experimenting less with new brews thanks to a worldwide shortage of one key beer ingredient and rising prices for others. Oh, and one other thing: Beer prices are likely to climb. Craft brewers don't have the means to hedge against rising prices, like their industrial rivals.
