Recently, I have been having an exchange in my other Wordpress blog concerning my post on Josephus (which you can find here and here). So far the exchange has been pretty friendly, despite the disagreements. I thought it would benefit everyone to read the exchange. I'll also add some additional comments on at the end.

The Writers Guild of America plans to brief its members this weekend on a deal taking shape to end their 3-month-old strike, using the meetings to gauge rank-and-file support for the labor plan, union leaders said on Tuesday. If members react favorably to the proposed deal at meetings set for Saturday in New York and Los Angeles, WGA leaders could act to lift or suspend the strike while a formal ratification process gets under way, two sources told Reuters. Those sources, who are familiar with the circumstances but are barred from speaking publicly about them under a media blackout for the talks, cautioned, however, that no formal deal with the studios was yet in place. They said negotiators were still working out fine points in the contract language.Hard-liners among the guild's leadership are expected to recommend a cautious approach on what steps to take next."There's lots of members urging the strike lasts until the contract is signed and ratified by the guild," one source said. The l

This is just the next logical step in the government’s intrusion into personal behavior, and private businesses’ practices. John McCain was exposed as being a liar last night in the Republican debate. He was called on his excuse for opposing the Bush tax cuts by Anderson Cooper. he has been stating during this campaign he opposed the Bush tax cuts because they didn’t reign in government spending. I call bullshit. We know, as [...]
There’s nothing snazzy for me to say about the Democratic debate going on right now, because there is no snazzy Jerry Springer moment. Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have spent their time so far engaged in policy talk that is low in heat and high in light, drawing the largest distinction between the [...]

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to the next Democrat Party debate. I figure here’s how it might shake out:

Hey, John Edwards just mentioned that his dad worked in a mill! I don’t know about you, but I’ve never heard that before.
But I’d rather hear about John Edwards’s daddy’s choice in underwear for twenty minutes than listen to twenty minutes of disappointing “neener, neener, you tie your shoes wrong” exchanges between Hillary Clinton [...]
I’m watching the latest CNN debate, and I’m wondering whether Wolf Blitzer is going to try, as he did in his last encounter with the Democratic candidates, to start a fight between the contenders. I certainly hope not — that served nobody but the Jerry Springer fans in the last audience.
Thankfully, the first question [...]
A heads up: Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama (but not continuing candidates Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel) have been invited to participate in a presidential debate tonight in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at 8 pm Eastern Time. The debate is cosponsored by CNN (and will be broadcast on cable at CNN and [...]
In an honour to slain former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto, the prestigious Oxford Union Debating Society organised a debate in her memory. Incidentally, Benazir was Society’s ex-president in 1977 while she studied at the Oxford. The debate was attended by Benair’s former colleagues, students and friends, besides her 19-year-old son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is a first year student at Christ Church College, reported the Dawn. According to the traditions, such functions do not go the whole length and are adjourned to honour dead alumni who died an unnatural death, after a speech by a keynote speaker. But Benazir was honoured by organising a full-day debate. The last such instance when the debate was adjourned was in 1979 when Benazir’s father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged, said journalist and Bhutto’s family friend Victoria Schofield. Benazir, who studied at the St. Margaret College was President of the Oxford Union in 1977, and was the first Asian woma
New Hampshire lawmakers will be debating HB 503. This is a bill that will implement a sales tax on bottled water, soft drinks, energy drinks, and baby formula. Naturally the cowards won’t call it a tax, they prefer the term “fee”, but it is a tax.
They are using a cute little ploy to try and [...]
I have to say I’ve been getting pretty impatient with the barrage of fervid communications from campaign underlings to the effect that so-and-so doesn’t like Martin Luther King or that such-and-such third hand aide was mean for saying that such-and-such wasn’t as big a back-and-forth as the other team’s fourth-string-press-flack said on Thursday. I [...]

What is NBC afraid of by including my man for President, Dennis Kucinich in the debate? By acting in this disgusting manner, they are only degrading themselves while lifting Dennis' stellar personality traits.
NBC should hang their collective heads in shame.

Among camera pros, the “Canon vs. Nikon” debate is as eternal and as heated any Mac vs. PC smackdown. And, with Nikon’s release of the D3 and D300 D-SLRs, the war of words has picked up with renewed frenzy. If you’re passionate about this, it’s easy to be drawn into the discussion at an emotional level and lose perspective, but there are some rational voices adding to the mix. One of them is Michael Reichmann, a professional photojournalist who also runs the excellent Luminous Landscape site. He has just posted a lengthy and very well-written review of the Nikon D-SLRs. Subtitled “a Biased Evaluation of The Differences Between the Nikon and Canon Brands,” Reichmann talks more about usability, functionality and flexibility than he does about image quality, because, for many photographers, those are the important things when you’re shooting every day under vastly different conditions. He clearly notes that he's not “switching,” but he does give some serious props to Ni

I have a feeling some niche marketers found success in a way that is not publicized on the Net.
What is typically publicized is the way of the “niche blitz”: Cover as many niches as possible en masse and monetize related information. This aims for quantity. Under the duress of time, strategization is sacrificed, and the [...]

ABC and Fox will shut out six Democratic and Republican candidates from debates this weekend in New Hampshire. Democrats Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel will be excluded from ABC’s undemocratic debate on Saturday. Republicans Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter will be excluded from a debate hosted by Fox on Sunday. But do these self appointed gatekeepers have any business interfering with our democratic process?

Shutterbug magazine has announced that they will publish an article, entitled "DSLR Sensor Wars: The Foveon/ Bayer Pattern Debate", in their January 2008 issue, addressing the subject of different image sensors used in digital cameras, and their relationship to final image resolution. The article will include comparison images made with three Digital SLRs, including the Sigma SD14 powered by the Foveon direct image sensor, and two pro level digital SLRs from other manufacturers, which use conventional Bayer Mosaic type image sensors. Several subjects were photographed in the experiment. A series of images of each subject were made with each camera, under controlled conditions, using the same type lens, to avoid variations caused by using different types of lens. The raw image files were then converted to high quality TIFF files, using the camera makers’ own processing softwares, to avoid variations caused by possible software issues. The sharpest images from each series were then sel

The situation in Pakistan regarding the January election for parliament is still unclear as political parties explore their options. From the NY Times:Two teams of scientists reported yesterday that they had turned human skin cells into what appear to be embryonic stem cells without having to make or destroy an embryo — a feat that could quell the ethical debate troubling the field. All they had to do, the scientists said, was add four genes. The genes reprogrammed the chromosomes of the skin cells, making the cells into blank slates that should be able to turn into any of the 220 cell types of the human body, be it heart, brain, blood or bone. Until now, the only way to get such human universal cells was to pluck them from a human embryo several days after fertilization, destroying the embryo in the process. The need to destroy embryos has made stem cell research one of the most divisive issues in American politics, pitting President Bush against prominent Republicans like Nancy Reagan, and patient advocates who hoped that stem cells could cure diseases like Alzheimer’s. The new studies could defuse the issue
