I have published the odd obituary on Organized Rage, the subjects of which have mainly been life long left-wing political activists and trade unionists. However other day I received an email from a friend in which he wrote that it is sad to read of the steady disappearance of good old campaigning socialists, trade unionists and similarly admirable people. I wonder whether there are enough such people coming through now for the obituarists in say 50 years from now to write about, I to have thought about this. Fortuitously the following day I got my answer when I had a visit from a young relation who told me about a recent protest mounted by the pupils in her school. After hearing her tale, [below] it made me feel that if the younger generation as a whole shows the same spirit as the youngsters at her school, then the Obituary writers of tomorrow will have plenty of work on their hands. MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's gold demand was low on Monday with prices holding near record and most jewellers selling items made from cheaper recycled gold that continues to fill markets, dealers said. "There is no demand al all. The jewellery trade is running on undercut gold," said Ganesh Agarwal of Shiv Sahai & Sons, a large wholesaler in Chennai. Banks and large trading houses, who sell imported gold, are seeing their prices undercut by local traders as a lot of old jewellery and bars are being sold for profit taking. The old gold is melted, refined and sold as bars or bullion to jewellers who are stocking their shelves with jewellery made from the recycled metal. Local prices were cheaper by 150 rupees per 10 grams over what the banks quoted, Agarwal said. Dealers in Mumbai banks said prices closer to $900 an ounce may encourage some demand. "People believe a correction is likely," said one dealer in a large private bank. Overseas gold firmed

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's gold demand was low on Friday as prices remained firm on news of supply problems in a big mining company and firmer crude oil, but traders waited to buy on dips in the local market, dealers said. "Its very, very dull," said Ganesh Agarwal of Shiv Sahai & Sons in Chennai. "There will be sales only if prices come down around $850 an ounce." Traders said their clients were buying in bits usually at dips as the wedding season had cranked up retail sales, though imported gold competed with the cheaper local stocks built up due to sale of scrap jewellery. "People are not comfortable at current levels, but there is buying at dips," said S.K. Jindal, director of Jindal Dychem, a large trading house based in New Delhi. Jindal and Agarwal said the dip earlier this week to around $885 level had pushed sales. Overseas gold was nearly flat from the previous day, but yet had the steam to push higher as platinum was near a record
By Dan Lalor LONDON (Reuters) - European planemaker Airbus forecast on Thursday demand for 24,300 passenger and freight aircraft worth $2.8 trillion between now and 2026, with Asia set to be the largest passenger market. Airbus's latest 20-year forecast is 1,600 aircraft higher than its previous estimate, with nearly half the increase due to its expectation older, less fuel-efficient aircraft will be retired early because of the sharp rise in the price of oil. Last year was a record year for planemakers, with Boeing notching 1,413 orders, pipping Airbus's 1,341. Both expect fewer orders this year but have backlogs that will keep them at record production well into the next decade. Airbus also said it had raised an internal target for sales of its new double-decker A380 given its latest global market forecast includes an expectation that 1,700 very large aircraft, seating at least 400 passengers, will be needed. The A380 is the only aircraft that currently fits the bill, Ai
MUMBAI (Reuters) - The rupee eased a touch against the dollar on Thursday, weighed down by a fall in the local stock market and by dollar purchases by oil refiners, dealers said. The partially convertible rupee ended at 39.535/545 per dollar, softening from its previous close of 39.515/525 but still above Wednesday's intra-day two-week low of 39.69. "We saw the rupee gain in the morning as people were liquidating their dollar positions, but it went down later as the stock market turned weak," said Rohan Lasrado, head of trading at HDFC bank in Mumbai. "Tomorrow, the market will look to buy (rupees)," he added. The rupee slipped to 39.56 in early trade, recouped those losses but then fell again in tandem with local equities. India's benchmark share index declined 3.4 percent on Thursday, amid fresh concerns a U.S. slowdown will erode corporate profitability. The index fell 2.8 percent on Wednesday. India said on Thursday it expected economic growth to sl
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian gold markets continued to see low-key buying on Thursday with weddings necessitating purchases even as gold hovered near its all-time high, dealers and traders said. "Every time gold falls under $900 an ounce, there is some demand," said Harshad Ajmera, proprietor of JJ Gold House in Kolkata. Retailers in his region were seeing good sales mostly of jewellery made out of recycled gold, while imported gold sold by traders moved sluggishly, Ajmera said. "Demand for imported gold is emerging slowly," said Satish Bansal of M.D. Overseas Ltd, a large New-Delhi based importer. Bansal said gold sales could strengthen if prices fell around $850. Overseas gold strengthened its recovery from the previous day's dips ahead of interest rate decisions by the Bank of England and European Central Bank but was over 3 percent down from its record $936.50 reached on Feb.1. Samajwadi Party and Shiv Sena activists have demanded action against Raj Thackeray, a Shiv Sena rebel and the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), for his comments on 'Chhat' festival. Samajwadi Party activists staged a protest in Varanasi on Sunday condemning Raj Thackeray's statement. Protestors halted 'Mahanagri Express' for two hours in Varanasi. Raj Thackeray had termed 'Chhat Puja', the annual festival of Bihar and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, as "drama". "By making such statements, Raj Thackeray has tried to divide the nation," said Ashutosh Sinha, an activist. Similar protests were witnessed in New Delhi where activists of Shiv Sena, the main opposition party in Maharashtra, demanded immediate arrest of Raj Thackeray. "Raj Thackeray's comments have not only insulted lakhs of people living in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, but also others. We request the Home Minister to arrest the person who tries to spurt communal hatred," said Jai Bhagvan Goy

After the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, her popularity has increased manifold, as her photographs, news articles and stamps are in high demand worldwide. The newspapers published after her demise on December 28 are being sold as historical documents and "people loved her because she was the voice of many" said Qamber Zaidi, a collector of rare stamps with Benazir's images, newspapers, post cards. "Those who have been hurt from her passing away want to keep her memory alive whether it’s her face on postage stamps, T-shirts or publications," Zaidi added. He said the postage stamps having Benazir's image were the most in demand, designed and published by the Pakistan Post in 1995 as an expression of respect for Benazir Bhutto. The Rs 5 stamp is being sold online for 15 dollars while the countries from where the demand is coming include the US, the UK, India and Africa, Zaidi said. MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's gold demand remained low on Wednesday and prices near all-time highs as a weaker dollar, tension in Pakistan and firm crude oil propped up the metal globally, dealers said. "Investors are not buying... there is little demand only from large jewellers," said Haresh Acharya, head of bullion desk at Parker Agrochem Exports Ltd, a large wholesaler in Ahmedabad. Indian gold prices were quoted around 10,800 rupees per 10 grams by banks and trade associations, one of the highest levels seen since the record high of May 2006, as overseas markets gained strength in the first trading day of the year that saw all of last year's bullish fundamentals persist. Foreign markets eyed important data from the U.S. -- the ISM manufacturing index -- that could weaken the dollar and further fuel gold. Economists in a Reuters survey expected the December reading of the index to be a touch lower than the previous month. A wholesaler in Mumbai, Prithviraj Kothari of Ri

Grand Lake in OK's supply of waterfront homes is shortGrand Lake waterfront homes and vacant waterfront lots in northeast Oklahoma are in short supply. Supply is always a part of the equation in what makes a real estate market soft or hot. The real estate market in Oklahoma never got red hot as the California, Nevada, and Florida markets did. This area has seen slower demand as the result of national media news on the slow real estate market in many areas of the nation.October, normally a brisk paced real estate month of 2007 was extremely slow with buyers afraid the sky was falling from all the national negative news. However beginning about Thanksgiving into the first third of the month of December, normally a slow time has seen the number of lookers pick up. There has also been several deals on waterfront properties.Interest rates are down again making now a great time to buy. With the short supply of waterfront homes available you will not see price declines here. If you wait,

A directive sent by Nikon Canada to dealers last week suggests that demand for the D3 will be sky high when it ships starting on November 30 to Canadian dealers, and that special measures are being taken to ensure the camera - as well as the newest Nikkor lenses - make it into the hands of working photographers. These measures include requiring a prospective purchaser to complete a "Customer Certification Form" in which they must indicate which photography segment they work in and provide reasons as to why they should receive "Priority Fulfillment." The photographer must also agree that the D3 is for their own use in Canada, that they don't intend to resell it (presumably to help limit the number of brand-new bodies being listed on eBay and the like) and that they don't have the camera on order at multiple dealers. more : robgalbraith

The obvious energy saving solution is to cut the amount of outside air used. But reducing outside air intake puts a serious damper on a building's IAQ.

Tatum Bell on Friday: Play me or trade me, DAMMIT!Tatum Bell today:Never mind...In his denials, Bell is using that hoary old stand by, "The media blew it up.""But it wasn’t really just demanding a trade or nothing like that. The media blew it up." That's about as believable an excuse as "The dog ate my homework." Despite the lame excuse, Bell continued to deny, deny, deny..."It wasn’t no talks of me getting traded."Uh...What? Talk about mangling the English language. Considering that a double negative resolves to a positive, Bell is actually confirming that there were trade talks, right?Bell's trade "Demand" was all a tempest in a teapot, anyway. He was going nowhere, both literally, as the Lions weren't about to trade Bell, as they are lacking depth at running back, and metaphorically, as even the thought of Bell being able to gain rushing yards behind the Lions offensive line, or in Mike Martz's pass insane scheme, is laughable.I guess you're stuck in the D till January, Tatum.
