  • Plagued With Diabetes In The Bahamas
Plagued with sugar: By Kermit B. Fernander - Nassau, Bahamas: When Mrs. Smith says she "has sugar", she means she has diabetes. But, to be honest, the Bahamian expression "having sugar" is misleading for the simple reason that sugar in the blood (also called blood sugar or blood glucose) is a vital component of blood, and without it we cannot live. When there are excessive amounts of sugar in the blood, this condition is known as diabetes. At the moment, far too many Bahamians have been diagnosed with diabetes, and this is of great concern to our local health authorities. Recently, Minister of Health and Social Development, Dr. Hubert Minnis, warned the public — yet again — about the escalating threat of diabetes and other chronic, non-communicable diseases. Labeling diabetes a chronic, debilitating and costly disease with severe complications, Dr. Minnis said: "In The Bahamas, it is estimated that approximately 10 percent of our population is living with diabetes, with the p

  • Osteoporosis and Diabetes: a Match Made From Hell
More than forty million Americans risk having a disease called osteoporosis; and more than half of this number is composed of women. This condition is mainly characterized by weak and thinning bone structures. People who are suffering from osteoporosis are more susceptible to having fractures and could end up becoming permanently disabled. There are several factors that can bring about osteoporosis. One's predisposition to experience drastic bone loss includes heredity, age, and even gender. But anybody can acquire the disease on account of mineral deficiency, sedentary lifestyle, and also bad habits like smoking and alcoholism.Generally speaking, you can avoid osteoporosis if you are fortunate enough to detect it in the early stages and if you start to live a healthier lifestyle. However, there are times when osteoporosis can progress in your body not because of the factors mentioned above, but rather because of other diseases. And one of the major health conditions that can bring abou
  • If you have Diabetes 2 you're screwed...
Okay that may seem harsh but after reading this you may not think so.Granted I am not talking about those whom are using lifestyle changes consisting of diet and exercise, specifically low carbohydrate diets, but after reading this I wonder how many actually do.I am referring to this diabetes 2 case vignette, I was just reading on The New England Journal of Medicine website where doctors are given a case study for a 51 year old lady seeking advice on managing her diabetes. They are given 3 treatment options and are then asked to vote on and discuss these options.None of these options are lifestyle changes, not only that, out of all the replies, there's barely a mention, though I did see a couple of doctors question the pharmaceutical influence of these options. Low carb and weight loss through lifestyle changes are mentioned a couple of times but considering the amount of comments by doctors there you're looking at maybe a couple of percent that were for diet and exercise. What is worse

  • Diabetes: as complicações; a prevenção e o tratamento
Surge então a diabetes. São dois os tipos principais de diabetes: Diabetes tipo 1 - Ocorre quando o organismo não produz insulina, surge quase sempre antes dos 30 anos. O tratamento requer sempre a ad

  • Type 2 Diabetes and Carrot Cake
Lol have you guys seen this gem? From Eureka, courtesy of the sugar Bureau:Carrot cake study on sugar in type 2 diabetesNew study adds to new thinking on sugar in the diabetes dietPatients with type 2 diabetes are often advised to cut out sucrose (table sugar) all together. However, in recent years this traditional advice has been questioned by some researchers who suggest that moderate amounts of sugar can be safely consumed as part of the diet of patients with diabetes. Now a new study has been published that is consistent with this revised approach. It showed that patients who increased their daily sugar intake (in the form of carrot cake) but maintained a stable body weight, showed no adverse changes in their blood glucose. The study was conducted by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at London’s Hammersmith Hospital. Three slices of carrot cake were added to the daily diets of nine, overweight type 2 diabetes patients over 24 days (bringing their daily total to 88g or 18 te

  • Diabetes - A Metabolic Disease
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. The food that we eat is broken down into a form of sugar called glucose, which is the main source of energy for the human body. This disease does not allow the body to create enough or properly process insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas allowing glucose to enter all the cells of the body and be used as energy. For those that are diabetic, sugar builds up in the blood instead of moving into the cells. Some of the surplus sugar is carried through the urine, out of the body, wasting the energy, and resulting in the body losing its main fuel source.Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes are three main forms of diabetes mellitus, which is the medical term for this sickness.Type 1 diabetes is categorized as an autoimmune disease, in this case, one that attacks and devastates the beta-cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. These types of diabetics are dependent upon insulin

  • Yeast derived substance may make for effective oral diabetes medication
Researchers at University of Haifa have discovered a substance derived from yeast, called Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF), that may develop into an oral treatment for diabetes and its complications.   Diabetes has been recognized as a major global health problem and affects 5-10 pct of the population in developed countries, while has recently been proclaimed as an "epidemic" in developing countries.   It is a chronic illness with no cure and can lead to kidney failure, heart problems, strokes or blindness, as well as other complications.   Lead researcher Dr. Nitsa Mirsky said that the substance has been effectively tested on rats and the next step is to assess its efficiency in humans.      “The research is now at the stage where the substance has been successfully tested on diabetic rats and was found to reduce sugar and lipids in the blood of the treated animals. The next stage of the research is to evaluate GTF efficacy in humans,&

  • DIABETES & BODYBUILDING
DIABETES & BODYBUILDING There are two types of Diabetes: Type I Diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes is purely Genetic, that is it is caused due to genes inherited from parents. Type II Diabetes: Type 2 Diabetes is caused by many years of diet abuse, substance abuse, living a careless and sedentary lifestyle, being obese. Type II runs in families so some are moresusceptible. Diabetes is a silent killer like high blood pressure. Bodybuilding is important in reducing this risk because increased muscle mass from resistance training increases the need for glycogen uptake in the muscles. Therefore they will need to use the extra glucose for reserves in energy in resistance training. Diabetes also increases your insulin sensitivity. Diabetes is insulin tolerance and therefore your body doesn’t react to massive amounts of insulin and store it in the glycogen like it should. By exercising you are counteracting the effect of diabetes and the insulin receptors to work at the “normal”

  • Why Following A Diabetes Diet Is Crucial
Insulin is a very important hormone which converts starchy foods and sugar into glucose, the type of sugar which is required for energy so that your body can function normally. The body stops to produce or use the insulin in the body when you have diabetes, so if you are a diabetic, a careful and strict diet has to be followed. Diabetes is a lifelong problem which has to be dealt with. It is not curable. You have to follow a routine of proper medications and a planned diabetes diet to keep the disease under control and to maintain your health.Know About DiabetesIt is important that you know thoroughly about the disease and also about the condition of your body. Each one of us has a unique body and although there are many other people with the same disease, it is not necessarily so that what works for them, will also work for you.
