  • Drink & Drive Your Way Through Grand Theft Auto!
Researching our book, we chronicled four separate, er, pastoral DUI incidences in which suspects slowly trundled away from authorities on lawn mowers or tractors at speeds that wouldn't test the warranty fine-print of even the cheapest, Chinese-made pacemakers. Most recently, a Michigan man with a bellyful of wine braved a snowstorm on his John Deere, and was busted en route to a nearby store.Today's focus though, is on a related scourge afflicting rural and urban culture alike-- violent video games, in particular the popular series Grand Theft Auto.Since youth culture emerged like so much acne, many a finger has been pointed at everything from the bikini and drag racing, to the broad chest of the guy who kicks sand in your face at the beach, and lately Facebook as the cause of whatever prevailing social ill. Now, the very latest calamity befalling youth culture appears to be the deviant, action adventure, role-playing game.[Editor's Note: We acknowledge, given the age of a typical gam

  • Drink and exercise your way to a longer life: study.
Like a bird feeding its young, news media regurgitate press releases before flying off to crap on other stories (such as wild parties thrown by Aussie teens that necessite a police helicopter response). We Shark Guys, however, offer the kind of sober analysis typically seen just prior to pitchers of stale beer arriving at your table. So, instead of focusing on that story, or some drunk who stumbled his way onto the property of English footballer Michael Owen and was chased by security personnel all over the finely manicured manor grounds of his 17th century estate, we decided to spotlight physical activity of a different sort.If the only exercise you get in a week is the mad dash to your PC when you’re instant messaged, you’re going to want to stamp out that cigarette (preferably on your tongue, just like in the movies), crack open a window a touch, breathe deep and take note as Danish researchers recently asked, “If you don't want to exercise too much, can you trade it for one to
  • Why Some People Drink Alcohol Without Getting Fat
By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS Alcohol has been implicated as a factor that may hurt your efforts to lose body fat. Whether moderate drinking is healthy has also been a subject of controversy. Many studies [...]
  • Does This Wine Make Me Look Fat?: How To Drink Wine While You're on a Diet
Dieting - how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... OK, DONE!No one really enjoys dieting, and while we may be of the epicurean mindset, even us wine lovers need to count the calories once in a while. To get our New Year's resolutions off to the right start, I've put together some information for wine lovers who might be wondering how wine factors into their their dieting plans...All alcoholic beverages have calories. This includes wine. Most wines contain a very small amount of sugars - a few grams - even wines that are totally "dry." Very sweet dessert wines contain a bit more, but overall this will still be less than 10 grams on average. You may even find a small amount of Sodium (about 1% the recommended daily amount) and even carbs (around 5 grams, or about 2% DV). But those all contribute a very small amount of calories to the overall wine experience.A Wine's calories are largely a factor of alcohol content. Alcohol content accounts for 80% or more of the calories in

  • Eat, Drink and be Berry
January is here again, and the season of expanding waistlines is slowly winding up; it looks like gym memberships and low-fat yoghurt are back on the list of things hip and happening and pork and anything that ends with the word pudding are back the list of all things dreaded and uncool. Only during the festive season is it okay to reach for your third or possibly even fourth helping of Christmas ham (with extra glaze), and everyone knows when you have multiple festivities to attend the food tally always reverts back to zero at the start of every function. Is it just me or does the capacity of one's belly tend to expand with each Christmas? I know now that I have had 26 years practice in eating to surfeit, and my belly can hold surprisingly more than I can fathom to eat. You should have seen the meagre amount of gingerbread men I could eat in the past, now I can practically down a whole tribe of them and their m&m covered house without even batting an eyelid. • "I just joined AA. I still drink -- I just use a different name."
Controlled drinking may seem like an oxymoron not to mention a highly theoretical construct to us Shark Guys, however it’s beginning to hold more sway with folks who didn't use Psych 101 as a place to sleep off that Sunday hangover. The concept of controlled drinking, or what we sometimes engage in at lunch, has apparently emerged as a welcome and acceptable treatment alternative to the buzz kill offered by the folks at Alcoholics Anonymous—total abstinence. Not abstaining at all, a concept we’ve kept an adamantine grasp on like that frayed rope your sadistic gym teacher had you climb in elementary school, might just be the best method of success. And this isn't us flapping our parched lips, but that's according to Dr. Michael Levy, author of "Take Control of Your Drinking...And You May Not Need to Quit", a tome that will be a welcome gift to sling under the tree of a loved one, while chapters are read aloud with a belt of eggnog. While the more attainable objective of being able

  • Do you know why you should drink?
Prof. Know Why answers: Drinking had been always associated with forgetfulness until recently, as a new research has overruled this age old theory. A glass or two of wine can boost our ability to remember, says a new study. Scientists have found that moderate amounts of alcohol challenge the brain and it responds by improving the memory. The findings rubbished the notion of drinking to forget, as they also show drinking enough to exceed the limit for driving means you are more likely to remember the embarrassment of an unrestrained spell – from making an indecent proposal to dancing without your trousers on. Contrary to popular belief, it has also been found that excessive levels of alcohol even enhanced memories of highly emotional stimuli. In fact, heavy drinking actually reinforces negative memories. But moderate levels of alcohol consumption, equivalent to one or two of wine a day, enhance memory on the whole. Researchers suggest - just like the best way to build stre
  • Do you know why pregnant women should not drink?
Prof. Know Why answers: Women who are pregnant or trying for a baby should stop drinking alcohol altogether or at least restrict to moderate drinking – the doctors advice. Because by exceeding the recommended limit they often put their babies at risk. But do women ever pay any serious attention on this cliché warning, ever? If not, all you women better know the consequences now, than be sorry, later! Although, moderate drinking like up to two units once or twice a week is permissible, total abstinence is always desirable – as the doctors say. Heavy drinking can cause Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, an incurable condition resulting in retardation, poor memory and in the worst cases, facial abnormalities. Surveys say, about one in 1,000 babies are born with the syndrome each year, worldwide. But a milder condition, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, is more common, affecting more than 6,000 children each year in Britain alone, and is a leading cause of learning difficulties.

  • Which One We Should Take After a Meal: Hot Drink or Cold Drink?
A silly question, right? So this is the 'not so silly' answer:The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals... not cold water... maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain... they have a much, much lower heart attack rate than we do. For those who like to drink cold water, this article is probably looks applicable to you.It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oil in the food that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fat and could lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water (tea or coffee) during and after a meal.A serious note about HEART ATTACKS:Know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.Be aware of intense pain in the j
  • Water, water, everywhere. Now which one should I drink?
You arrive in Ukraine. After a long trip to get here, and maybe even some time going through immigration and customs, you're tired and you need something to drink. Something simple, like bottled water. But here in Kiev, bottled water isn't a simple matter. In the US, you just go down the aisle with the water, find a brand you like from a choice of three or four, and take it to the cashier to pay. Two problems here. First, except in some larger stores and supermarkets, you just can't walk down an aisle and pick up your purchase. You must tell the attendant what you want and she'll get it for you. That may be a problem if you are Russian and Ukrainian challenged. But let's say you know "voda" the Russian word for water. You ask for voda and she'll start asking you questions. This is because water is no simple matter here in Kiev. And here's the second problem. Your choices may consist of:Plain water without gas.Plain water with gas.Mineral water without gas.Mineral water with
  • All the beer you can drink! (Or so you'd think...)
It’s something that every blurry-eyed soak with the wherewithal to dream wishes for: the day somebody says he will pick up every bar tab that comes before him till the day he drops dead. Paying for one’s beer-guzzling habit is undoubtedly the least appealing aspect of heavy drinking (next to the dry heaves) and the wish to drink as much as possible on as little money as possible explains why when it comes to mass producing beer, there are no standards too low if a cheap price-tag can be slapped on at the end. (This fact also explains why people say they love their home-brewed beer even when they didn’t have a clue what they were doing when they made it and resent having to drink such cheap slop). Croucher Brewery Company in New Zealand recently drew international headlines and more free publicity than it could have hoped for* when it offered a “lifetime supply” of beer to the person who returned a laptop that someone had spirited off its premises (Full story here). • Soft Drink Smackdown: Pepsi vs Coke
In a real fight between Coke and Pepsi, Pepsi won. I wonder if 7UP fights the winner. The long-standing rivalry between Coke and Pepsi took a physical turn Friday when a Pepsi deliveryman allegedly punched his Coke counterpart in the face at a western Pennsylvania Wal-Mart, state police said. The two deliverymen were "apparently bickering back and forth" while unloading their wares at the Indiana County store, police said. When the Coke deliveryman left the store, his counterpart allegedly punched him in the face three times, breaking his nose and giving him a black eye, police said. No charges have been filed, but police characterized the incident as a misdemeanor simple assault.
  • Drink & Dial, part deux
Before he began to resemble a manatee carrying twins, a lean Marlon Brando once remarked ‘What you got’ when asked ‘What are you rebelling against?’Later in his career, when he began rebelling against dynamism and a high fiber diet (he famously bared his fat arse to 100 extras between takes during the filming of the Godfather's wedding scene, causing more than one cast member to upchuck into their tiramisu), he literally became a larger than life icon.Still, he's remembered more for delivering lines that became catchphrases than being unable to refuse an offer of an all-you can-eat buffet. An Atlanta teen, exhibiting some Brando-esque bellicoseness of his own, mouthed off at cops with a ballsy ‘Yeah, what of it?’ when asked if he’d been drinking---an admirable retort if it were not the the end result of having drunk dialed 911. • Can You Drink And Still Lose Fat?
Ask any fitness expert about the effect of alcohol on weight loss and you’ll quickly have them quip back to you that yes, if you drink alcohol you will gain fat. A lot of men are proud of their beer belly, shaking them at football games, painting them with the letters of their favorite ball teams and flaunting them in the faces of many a spectator. That said, the other side of the coin is true as well. Many men are trying to lose their beer belly, have quit drinking and train hard with weights and include cardiovascular activities like walking, running, biking or swimming into their training program, resigning themselves to a life of sobriety in order to have their dream body. The latest science seems to show that it’s not the case. You may just be able to drink in moderation and still achieve your dream body. The alcohol and weight loss question has been put to rest by Tom Venuto in this article Alcohol and Weight Loss – Why Some People Can Drink Alcohol Without Getting Fat.

  • You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink
How many times have you heard that statement? It is an old bit of country wisdom. You can bring your horse to the water trough. But, if he ain't thirsty, then he ain't drinkin'.Now, consider an update to that piece of rural wisdom. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. However, you can salt his oats! In days gone by, our forefathers knew that if a horse has been sick and is weak and in danger of going down, you can put a little salt in his oats and that salt will draw it to the watering trough and make it want to drink. This is a great analogy of God's grace in our lives before we actually come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is active in our lives in such a way that He creates a "thirst" for the things of God in our lives. Those of us from a Wesleyan heritage would call this Prevenient Grace. Maybe it is even more dramatic than a mere "thirst". Sometimes it is the Holy Spirit making us so miserable that we seem to have no wh

  • Drink your vegetables
I have been a vegetarian (ovo-lacto) for most of my life and I have no regrets even though a lot of people always say "Pity, you are missing out on all the tasty food". Actually I am not missing out on anything.I find it quite strange that some people hate vegetables. This natural food contains different vitamins, minerals and others, which has so many health benefits. There are so many studies that have shown that a regular vegetable intake can prevent diseases and help in controlling your weight. If you are one of those guys who hate eating vegetables but want the good benefits of vegetables, why not try drinking them. That's the idea behind a daily dietary supplement called "My Daily Veggies" brought out by a company called Lane Labs, LLC. • Drink less, lose more?
A recent study reported on in the International Journal of Obesity found that individuals who had more of their lunch calories coming from liquids, as opposed to the same calories from solids, actually consumed more calories throughout the rest of the day. Quite interesting. What is unique about this study, is that this effect was observed regardless of the content of the liquid--be it carbohydrate, protein or fat. This means that if you replace some of the calorie-containing beverages you drink with solid food instead, you many end up consuming fewer calories by day's end. This changes could be as simple as choosing an apple as opposed to drinking apple juice.Could this help you fight those late night munchies? Perhaps. For more details about the study and how it was conducted, click here.

As noted here in a column by New York Times reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg, Bushco reopened the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room yesterday for its dutiful Beltway stenographers, at a taxpayer cost of $6 million (the total renovation cost was $8 million).Press Secretary Tony Snow Job, of course, created some fanciful narrative whereby Laura noticed decrepit wiring in the old room and commanded, “This won’t do. Fix it,” and then, as if by magic, all was made better (largely on our dime, of course). And why exactly has this all transpired? Well, because Bushco isn’t being featured in the news as much as it would like, and they’re looking for sympathetic reporting (awwwww). As Stolberg notes…Mr. Bush’s communications team, trying to gin up coverage, has gotten more creative. Last summer, he held a news conference in Chicago intended to attract regional coverage. In April, he used high-tech electronic graphics in Grand Rapids, Mich., to promote his troop buildup in Iraq. He held
