  • College Party Crackdown: UK gets serious about freshman drinking
We can't speak for the US, where drinking laws are such that when you're finally legal you have a hairline receding more than a North Atlantic tide, but in Canada and the UK, you're able to drink, drive and vote all under the age of 20 (perhaps even in the same day if you have lots of errands to run)In the UK, "freshers", ("frosh" in Canada, "freshmen" in the US) such as the girl seen here, taking a much needed study break, have been known to dull the rigors of those stressful first two weeks of class registration and receipt of more than three course syllabuses, by tilting the wrist. Now, the UK government is threatening a freshman orientation crackdown worse than when your Visa's declined at the corner bar and you've donned a hairnet and helped with the dishes. According to a Sunday Times report, however, hypocrisy abounds as Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, as a drunk teen (hencforce known for his dry wit), purportedly set fire to a greenhouse full of award-winning (?) cacti and
  • Out of their heads: Study finds songs about drinking, drugs
We're not entirely sure why anyone would bother, but - presumably during a quiet time - a team led by Dr. Brian Primack of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine totted up the number of references to drinking and drugs in pop songs, did some maths, and decided that 15 to 18 year old kids in America hear 30,000 references to substance use every year. While listening to music.Apparently.Seventy-seven percent of rap songs tracked in the study contained such references, along with 36 percent of country songs, 20 percent of songs classified as "R&B/hip-hop," 14 percent of rock songs and 9 percent of pop songs. Alcohol and marijuana were the most common references found, with tobacco more rarely mentioned. In "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off", country singer Joe Nichols sings: "She can handle any champagne brunch/A bridal shower with Bacardi punch/Jello shooters full of Smirnoff/But tequila makes her clothes fall off."Blimey. One song and that's four references right there. The stu
  • Chronic drinking may cause severe pneumonia after surgery: Study
A new study on mice has found that chronic alcohol consumption can result in a severe form of pneumonia after a surgery.   The study indicated that people who have a consistent drinking habit might have immune-function problem following surgery. They may even have a two- to five-fold greater chance of post-operation infection complications.   The authors of the study have suggested that patients considering surgery should control their drinking habits, and also be very honest with their doctors about their drinking habits, prior to surgery.   Claudia Spies, medical associate director of the department of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the University Hospital Charité, Universitaetsmedizin Berlin, said that surgery can be scheduled or the result of an accident, and in either case, complications can arise because of prior alcohol consumption.   “A significantly high rate of complications can develop in patients who consume alcohol at levels
  • Parental drinking, parenting practice influences teen drinking
A new study has shown that parental drinking not only directly influences adolescent drinking, but also indirectly through teens’ perceptions of parenting, especially monitoring and discipline received.   Adolescence is a crucial time of development on many different levels, but especially concerning the initiation and escalation of alcohol use.   The new findings highlight the impact of parental drinking and parenting practices on adolescent drinking.   “We wanted to, first, examine the extent of the relationship between the drinking behaviours of parents and those of their adolescent offspring at 14 and 17.5 years of age,” said Shawn J. Latendresse, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioural Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University, and corresponding author for the study.   “Second, we wanted to determine how much of that association was due to parents' drinking behaviours affecting their a
  • At faith-based event, Bush recalls drinking problem
By Ayesha Rascoe BALTIMORE (Reuters) - President George W. Bush reflected on his battle with alcohol abuse on Tuesday, acknowledging that he once drank too much, as he sought to showcase the religious-based programs that have been one of the controversial initiatives of his presidency. Bush, who gave up alcohol at age 40, made the comment during a visit to the Jericho program, run by the Episcopal Community Services of Maryland, which helps recently released prisoners re-enter the workforce. The visit was part of an effort to highlight one of his domestic priorities -- providing government funding for religious-based organizations to help their communities. "Addiction is hard to overcome. As you might remember, I drank too much at one time in my life," said Bush, who has often stated that religion became a greater part of his life after he gave up alcohol. "I understand faith-based programs. I understand that sometimes you can find the inspiration from a higher

  • On Drinking Wine
People seem to struggle when it comes time to selecting wine. My co-worker Marcos would insert a pun here, something like "whine is not delicious." However, most agree that wine, without the 'h', is delicious. The question is, how do you pick the best wine?It seems odd that buying and picking wine makes so many people uncomfortable, but it shouldn't, it's really not that hard. So first, let's debunk a few myths and then consider a few basic tips.Myths to Ignore:Expensive wine is better wine. Wrong! Although some recent research shows that when people think wine is expensive, they think it tastes better, even when it's the same wine! Many wonderful wines are available for less than $10.Vintage is important. Barely! In days gone by, grape farmers had limited ability to manage the dramatic changes of weather, and therefore the impact on grapes between good and bad seasons could be huge. Advancements in farming and winemaking, including the blending of various vintages, mean that vintage

  • Make it a double – she's drinking for two
Authors of a recent study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health offered some good news to pregnant women who may want to continue on in the lifestyle that got them in that condition in the first place when they said that it might be ok for expectant mothers to binge drink on occasion without harming their unborn. This goes against orthodox thinking on the subject and will come as a surprise to those who have lost major points with the missus when suggesting during a lull in Lamaze class that everybody repair to the local bar because “this is all just a big money-grab anyway”. But before you and your mates and a yummy mummy of your acquaintance toast the baby by gently tapping the outside of the womb with your can of Michelob Light and rubbing it for luck, keep in mind that the study was limited to the effects of the occasional binge enjoyed by someone who was not a chronic alcoholic. A number of studies have linked heavy drinking during pregnancy to stunte

As such, your final ride on this earth, or to put it another way, God’s checkered flag coming down on the victory lap of your life, will be in a hearse – and hopefully not the late model, back-firing jalopy pictured here. [Editor’s Note: This would of course precede, depending on your particular religious beliefs, you being shot up to heaven via some kind of seraphic service elevator.]Hearses were originally horse-drawn and lest you think the word itself was derived from a slurred, drunken elocution of "horse"—unfortunately, it wasn’t. • Drinking and Dieting
Alcohol and weight is a subject relevant to millions of people who like to drink alcoholic beverages and who also either want to maintain or to lose body weight. It is uncertain whether alcohol leads to increase in body weight or if it does not. Some studies find an increase in body weight, some studies do not, and some find a small decrease among women who begin consuming alcohol. There has been a good amount of research over the last few years about the benefits of red wine and safe limits for alcohol consumption, but what about alcohol when you’re trying to diet? The truth may be surprising to you.Drinking alcohol, whether in the form of wine, liquor, or beer, can negatively affect weight loss. People who try to find the best diet but also drink alcohol have a harder time losing weight than those who do not drink at all. Here are some facts:Pure alcohol contains about 7 calories per gram, which makes it nearly twice as fattening as carbohydrates or protein (both contain about 4 ca

We devoted an entire chapter in The Shark Book to this topic -- “Festive Cheers: Hooch on the Holidays”, which contained, among other family-album favorites, a tale of a drunken Santa (for a full movie-length treatment of this particular theme, we highly recommend Bad Santa) who, after drinking boxed wine all day between consultations with the tots, crashed through his department store’s main display window.
