While in London earlier this week, Elvis recorded a version of "It's Only Me" for Black Cab Sessions. Poor old Elvis. Not only has he been dead for thirty years - thereby missing out on Wendy's Triple Stack - but now his supremacy as the greatest pop record holder is being nibbled away. Garth Brooks has just overtaken him as the biggest-selling solo artist of all time - and he's still alive, and still recording, giving him something of an advantage over Elvis. To make matters worse, Jay-Z looks a shoo-in to tie Elvis' record of most number ones by a solo artist. (Z, by the way, is grumpily refusing to allow his album, American Gangster, go on iTunes because he doesn't want people to pick and choose which tracks to buy. Which, we'd suggest, is an admission by Z that there's some filler on the album that nobody would buy if it was left to go to market on its own merits.)Oh, and the Reeses Peanut Butter and Banana Creme Elvis memorial edition was as horrible and inedible as anything late-period Presley managed. A tribute to a man who ate himself to death in chocolate and peanut butter? Fit

Priest has no problem worshipping God and ElvisTue Oct 16, 9:47 AM ETSORBO, Italy (Reuters) - Romanian-born Antonio Petrescu believes you can worship God and Elvis at the same time: as a Catholic priest and Elvis Presley impersonator, he finds his spiritual inspiration in the late rock legend. "People ask me 'How can you reconcile Elvis impersonations with your choice of professional work?'" said Petrescu, who puts on his glittery suits and swivels his hips when not working as a parish priest in the Italian town of Avezzano.Interviewed by Reuters on a church visit to the tiny town of Sorbo -- population, 52 -- in southern Italy, the priest said he believes Elvis is an appropriate inspiration for Christian worship because he sang of "love in general."The 34-year-old's Web site (www.antoniupetrescu.com) has two separate entries -- one for the priest, another for the artist, which talks about his "fiery voice" and discography including the singles "Lovin' Arms" and "Reach out to Jesus."T

The Ascendant is very important in Vedic astrology, and so is the Moon. However, the Sun is less important than in Western astrology and is sometimes considered to have a malefic influence.Vedic astrology does not recognize the outer planets (although some Western Vedic astrologers use them). The Vedic solar system ends with Saturn. Therefore, Elvis’s Scorpio Ascendant is ruled only by Mars. I was watching a TV special on Elvis last night (with my Elvis-fan wife) and it talked about Elvis’s love of dangerous leisure activities. He apparently loved to ride things that had motors, went fast, and might tip over—speed boats, motorcycles, etc. Very Martian. The Vedic horoscope is divided into 27 equal-sized lunar “mansions.” The lunar mansion, or nakshatra, of the Ascendant is considered to be a major life influence.Elvis’s Scorpio Ascendant was in the Jyestha nakshatra, symbolized by a protective talisman--aid by supernatural forces. The god who presides over this Nakshatra is
Today is the 30th Anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, and I think it's a great day for folks to share an Elvis memory on my blog contest. Click here to enter the contest. These links might interest you also:"Top Earning Dead Celebrities""Duet Marks 30th Anniversary of Elvis Death"I heard on the tv last evening an interview with Linda Thompson, one of Elvis's girlfriends for a long time. She said (and I paraphrase) that Elvis was extremely fond of Hawaii and was one of his favorite places.Elvis has a big fan in Hana (Maui), and at her roadside jewelry and gift store, she has parked an Elvis car which truly is amazing. Here's a photo of the hood of it.So here's MY THIRTEEN Memories ABOUT ELVIS and about the song he's singing on my contest (hey, I'm entering my own contest!):1. his amazing, sexy dance moves2. his handsome face--especially the early years3. his touching way of singing the famous Don Ho song "I'll Remember You"4. his larger-than-life stage presence--charisma!5. his
On August 16, 1977, I was at the Bob’s Big Boy coffee shop on Vine Street in Hollywood when a friend—a musician, actually—came in and told me that Elvis had died. It was one of those moments, frozen in time and memory: my friend sitting across from me in a coffee shop booth, his head bowed, silent, gently mourning.I’ve always liked Elvis a lot, but my wife is a huge fan. She’s got many of his records and movie soundtracks; whenever she notices there is going to be an Elvis movie or special on TV, she’s ready to record it. In fact, as I am writing this blog, she's got Viva Las Vegas playing on the TV in the background.A few years ago. I read a remarkable, dystopian, science fiction book called Elvissey, by Jack Womack. In Elvissey, the future world is run by a corporation, Dryco, that uses the Church of Elvis to keep people pacified. The story is narrated by a woman who must go back into the past with her husband, find Elvis, and bring him into the present (future) to enabl
Perhaps the most important contribution of Elvis to popular culture: If it hadn't been for his fame, then Jesse Garon and The Desperadoes would, almost certainly, have been called something else. This is their video for Grand Hotel:
Elvis was a hero to most/ But he never meant shit to me...Twelve years after Presley's death, and Public Enemy start the fight to take it back. Obviously, it's all going to end badly - in Sideshow Flav's case, in a career-end as embarrassing as anything Elvis managed in his rhinestone finery. But for a moment...
Continuing our day of Elvis-sideways videos:"There ain't a lot I can do about it, though/ force-fed your so-called heroes". Lawrence from Felt demolishes the very idea of there being a Pantheon:
With so many Elvis tribute acts, you have to do something to stand out. Briefly, Dread Zeppelin - who did reggae covers of Led Zep songs with an Elvis impersonator on lead vocals - stood out, although possibly not in a good way. This is Immigrant Song:
It would be foolish to suggest that Elvis Presley hadn't been responsible for some great pop moments. It's just he wasn't directly involved in most of them.Today, then, by way of tribute, some of the peanut-butter-greased fingerprints he left on popular culture.First - appropriate for today - Elvis Is Everywhere by the great Mojo Nixon:more listed here todayDread Zeppelin's reggae Led Zep fronted by Elvis routineFelt - Middle of the RoadPublic Enemy - Fight The PowerJesse Garon & The Desperadoes - Grand Hotel
On August 16th 1977, a tragedy struck the music world. It was 30 years ago today that Elvis Presley passed away and the music world forever lost an amazing musician and cultural icon. So much has been said about Elvis over the years that it seems almost ridiculous to try and say [...]
Thirty years ago a quiet young woman married a long-haired young man who wasn’t quite so quiet. Both the bride and the groom wanted a small quiet wedding. They managed to obtain the beautiful front room of a brownstone in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. They only invited family and close close friends. Distance from home made the feat simpler. A friend helped us write the vows, and it was over in a flash. We had poppyseed cake (our favorite) and some chocolate cake and a bunch of stuff to drink, and then we borrowed a car and drove over into Manhattan for a couple of nights in the big city.
The date was actually the 14th (of August). While our short honeymoon was winding down (hey, we had no money) two days after the wedding, Elvis chose his time do die. I don’t know if he REALLY chose the time, but his death certainly overshadowed our wedding, at least in the Daily News. We drove the car back to a friend’s house, and took the subway home to our apartment
At one time there were many little stands or kiosks lining the road between Hana town and the Seven Sacred Pools. However, this too has changed! Now there is a shack selling Thai food of all things and not much else except for one or two souvenir stations. One of the places that has remained is the roadside jewelry stand of the woman in the photo above with Elvis, a die-hard Elvis fan. Her brightly painted Elvis 'shrine car' is parked across the narrow road from her jewelry counters which are conveniently located near a beautiful waterfall. Thus, this is a busy, congested place where lots of tourists and tourist vans stop for picture taking and souvenir shopping. If you thought the road to Hana was hairy-scary, then the road worsens when you head out from Hana town to the Seven Sacred Pools. This is the area which was closed down for awhile after the last big Maui earthquake weakened one of the many bridges. The old bridge was replaced with a shiny new one which we drove across with mu

There's an airport hangar somewhere in Nevada, filled with Elvis memories, and a couple of 18-wheelers ready to take them on tour for the children of America, at $20 per head. They aren't leaving the hangar until a battle over their ownership takes place. The fight over them is brewing in Delaware's Chancery Court. These memorabilia were used by Elvis Presley, and by his Doctor George Nichopoulos, and it sounds like it could be an entertaining time in Court. The tug of war involves such things as:Doctor's bag: "Black doctor's bag used by Dr. Nichopoulos for making house calls to Graceland and touring with Elvis Presley."Stuffed dog: "Elvis had this dog in his suite at the Las Vegas Hilton . . . Elvis jokingly used dog as a pillow. Just as they were leaving to go on stage, Elvis threw the dog at Dr. Nick and said, 'This dog is for you!' Framed notarized letter of authenticity."Laryngeal scope: "Used to examine Elvis' chronic sore throat and tonsils . . . Dr. Nick had to take additional s
