  • U.S. STOCKS - Market climbs back, helped by tech, energy
By Jennifer Coogan NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Monday, recovering from last week's losses, as bargain-hunting and takeover talk sparked gains in the technology sector and a rise in crude oil futures lifted energy stocks. A 6 percent gain in General Motors Corp's stock helped the Dow offset a drop in shares of American International Group Inc. The world's largest insurer received a rebuke from its auditors for how it valued some credit derivatives, sending it shares down 11 percent. Nasdaq was outpacing gains in the Dow and S&P, led by Apple Inc and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry device. Both stocks had fallen more than one-third from their 2007 highs, making them attractive bargains, traders said. "Tech is the trade right now. They're picking the ones that have been beaten down the most. They're not as toxic as financials and housing," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey. • Renewable energy could create 18,000 jobs
Last week, while standing at the foot of new 150-foot wind turbine in Maple Grove, Minn., U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar made the exciting announcement that she will introduce the "American Renewable Energy Act" when the Senate reconvenes later this month. This legislation would establish a national renewable energy standard requiring that 25 percent of our energy come from renewable sources like wind, solar and bio-fuels by the year 2025. A national renewable energy standard would create a large market for clean sources of energy -- reducing global warming pollution and strengthening our economy. Earlier this year, the House did pass an energy bill that would have put us on the path to a clean energy future. The bill included a 15 percent by 2025 renewable energy standard. Unfortunately, a minority of Senators blocked passage of this standard. We thank Sen. Klobuchar for her leadership in reviving, and improving, this critical legislation. In addition to establishing

  • Little Ricky’s A Real Gas On Alternative Energy
I had to take a minute and note this column from PA’s happily-now-former Senator Rick Santorum that appeared in today’s Philadelphia Inquirer where he beats the drum of energy self-sufficiency, so to speak…Across Pennsylvania, farmers are also digging and planting corn and other crops that will be turned into ethanol that can replace gasoline in our cars. Most cars in America can't run on ethanol, however, so who is going to install ethanol pumps at the gas station without the cars to run on it? At this point I would say to all of my hard-core conservative friends: Hold on to your hats. What we need is a government mandate! We need to mandate that all cars sold in the United States, starting with the 2010 model year, be "flex-fuel vehicles" - that is, they should be able to run on a blend that is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline (the so-called E85 blend), or even a coal-derived methanol/gas mixture. This mandate would cost a fraction of the new fuel economy standard with

No matter how many commercials you see with energetic, skinny people running around, they didn’t get like that from whatever product is for sale. It’s called acting, and the product is most likely a scam.Second of all, one of the most well-known sources of energy drain is stress. One great suggestion to try is deep breathing; another is meditation. With that said, check out these five surefire tips to aid you in regaining an upward momentum:1. • U.S. energy sec urges OPEC to raise output at meeting
By Andrew Hammond RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said on Saturday that Saudi Arabia should raise output to ease tightness in world oil supplies and that OPEC should up output at its Feb. 1 meeting. "I think it is possible for there to be an increase in supply over a period of time because there is a reserve," he told reporters, referring to Saudi Arabia. "I believe they have to alleviate this problem." "It's important there's an increase in supply," he said, when asked whether he wanted producer cartel OPEC to commit to a production increase at a Feb. 1 meeting in Vienna. "The figures would indicate a call for increased supplies. As to the numbers, I wouldn't like to speculate." Bodman is on a tour of Middle East countries, after U.S. President George W. Bush visited the region last week. Bush said he would ask Saudi King Abdullah for Saudi Arabia to take action to help lower high world oil prices, which Washi

  • Edelman's Moral Quandaries (Pt. 1)--Sustainable Energy
To start this off I want to link to Edelman's original post. He presented five moral challenges to humanity: sustainable energy, divorcing morality from religion, balancing personal freedom with division of wealth, drop nuclear options, and getting serious about global human rights. I've been thinking about these for a while, some more than others, and so I'm going to write a series of posts addressing the issues.First up is sustainable energy. Edelman wrote the following:As I’ve written before on my post about Global Warming Skepticism, I don’t particularly care about the Earth, except inasmuch as we can’t live without it. Right now, letting the Earth die means letting us die. So it’s imperative for the species’ survival that we either a) learn to conserve the planet’s natural resources, b) figure out how to keep the species going using renewable resources, or c) invest heavily in survivalism science that will let us live without them. (Or, more likely, a combination o
  • Boosting Your Energy
Drastic changes in eating and exercise habits can be difficult to maintain for the long term, but there is one simple change in diet that is easy to incorporate. It raises energy levels throughout the day and can help a fledgling gym-goer make it to the treadmill after work. The key is eating more “slow” carbohydrates, also known as complex carbohydrates, or, for those who see life in simpler terms, “good” carbs. A slow carbohydrate raises blood sugar levels gradually, providing a steady stream of energy to our body’s cells, and especially our brains. Whole grain foods -- such as oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, brown rice, lentil soup and beans are great slow carbohydrates. Fast carbs, on the other hand, are digested quickly, causing a spike in blood sugar followed by a steep drop as the pancreas produces insulin to funnel extra energy into the body’s cells. Processed foods that contain refined sugar and white flour are fast carbohydrates. As any junk-food junkie knows, they giv

  • Any “Energy” To Run Against Patrick, PA Repugs?
The following letter appeared in the Bucks County Courier Times on Saturday…We applaud the U.S. House and Senate for passing a much-needed energy bill, and we especially commend Congressman Patrick Murphy for his leadership on this forward-looking legislation. Most significantly, this new law increases fuel efficiency standards for automobiles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, the first such increase in 32 years. As oil has reached $100 a barrel, this legislation will significantly reduce Americans' oil consumption, our dependence on imports, and will help combat global climate change. The bill also contains numerous measures to increase the efficiency of buildings, household appliances, electronics and light bulbs, all of which save consumers money on electricity bills. This bill is good for jobs, good for the economy, good for national security, good for consumers and good for our planet. We look forward to continuing to work with Murphy to make more progress on clean energy in 2008.Ge

  • Voller Energy - Fuel Cells
I keep hearing of fuel cell technology being "right around the corner", but had yet to see real production units. Voller Energy seems to actually be producing something that is usable and which you might actually be able to buy when it launches commercially in 2008. Designed to run from LPG, propane or butane, they are already aiming for the marine and RV markets, among others. This might be a technology that fits well with my timeframe, although costs will be of course interesting. They recently had one of their pre-production units on a yacht that crossed the Atlantic (it was sail, but they were using the fuel cell for electric power, as I understand it).
