  • European lab spacewalk delayed for a day - NASA
By Irene Klotz HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. space shuttle Atlantis arrived at the International Space Station on Saturday, but the installation of its primary cargo, a European science laboratory, will be delayed for a day due to an astronaut health problem, NASA said. Space agency officials would not disclose who was ill or what the problem was, but said German astronaut Hans Schlegel, 56, would not take part as planned in the spacewalk to attach the lab to the station. He will be replaced by fellow Atlantis crewmember Stan Love, said mission management team leader John Shannon. The installation of the $1.9 billion Columbus lab, Europe's main contribution to the $100 billion space station, will take place on Monday instead of on Sunday, Shannon said in a briefing at Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA rules prevent much disclosure about astronaut health problems, but Shannon said the illness "is not life-threatening." Schlegel flew on a shuttle in 1993 and was

  • Space shuttle, European lab lift off from Florida
By Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The U.S. space shuttle Atlantis blasted off from its seaside Florida launch pad on Thursday to deliver a $1.9 billion European science laboratory to the International Space Station. Defying a dismal weather forecast, Atlantis lifted off at 2:45 p.m. (1945 GMT) and headed toward a Saturday rendezvous with the station. Tucked into the cargo bay was the European Space Agency's Columbus module, the centerpiece of a $5 billion program to give Europe a permanent toehold in space. "Liftoff of space shuttle Atlantis, as Columbus sets sail on a voyage of science to the space station," said NASA commentator George Diller as the ship rose into the sky, trailing a tail of bright flame. For more than 25 years, European researchers have relied on the hospitality of others to operate experiments in orbit. With Columbus, Europe will have a permanent space lab for a variety of biology, physiology, fluid physics and other experiments. &q

Gosh, I’m all red faced at the moment because I forgot to acknowledge DHS Secretary Mike Chertoff’s birthday yesterday.Fortunately for me, though, he’s in the news again today, this time in Dublin, Ireland to pitch his plan to develop “a global system of anti-terrorist screening” at U.S. and European airports. This is a good thing in theory, actually, but true to the Bushco “go-it-alone” ethos, he’s pitching this unilaterally throughout Europe instead of addressing his concerns at the United Nations, where agreements can be negotiated and brokered (you know, the whole “give and take” thing that Bushco does so well – snark). As this story tells us…When asked whether the United States considered a homegrown attack likely – the prevailing pattern in Britain, where British-born or legal residents have plotted or committed a string of attacks since 2005 – Chertoff said America needs to make the screening of international travelers a priority.“We have less of a pr
