  • Evolution and Atheism Aren’t Married
By Brian Worley of Exminister.orgOrganized religion has several “sacred cows”, science has one also that answers to the name “evolution”. Aren’t the rest of us lucky that we have just a few choices to choose between without incurring the wrath of the “enforcers” of these sacred cow proponents? Well, I want to clear my throat and muster my courage by replying with my own eight-word salvo. Evolution and Atheism aren’t married to each other!Yes it is true that a large majority of skeptics and scientist believe in the respected position of evolution. But there are several scientists who don’t hold to evolutionary theory, and certainly not to creationism folly. These are outside of the box thinkers that respect scientific methods. They understand that evolution is just a theory; I won’t insult those who have forgotten what the definition of what a theory is.Christian fence straddling,Christianity is married to creationismAs I earlier stated, evolution and atheism aren

Winning Eleven? Nope, it's Pro Evolution SoccerFiled under: NewsForever, there has been a divide between the Winning Eleven and the Pro Evolution Soccer fanboys of the world. A divide that had North American gamers playing Winning Eleven while their European friends played Pro Evolution Soccer. Funny thing is, they're the same game. But that naming confusion has been put to rest and will be no more as Konami just made it official that Pro Evolution Soccer will no longer be referred to as Winning Eleven in North America and, from hence forth, will be universally titled Pro Evolution Soccer worldwide (sans Japan). That means, North American gamers will never have a chance to experience Winning Eleven 11 (hehe, eleven), but will unite with their European brothers in playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Rejoice and be glad. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Dustin Burg - Tue, 05 Feb 2008 17:15:00 GMT - Feed (2 subs) konami pes2008

  • Losses of long-established genes contributed to human evolution, scientists find
The evolution of new genes is not the only way for a species to change. The loss of genes may also lead to adaptations that help species survive, but this idea has not been well studied. Now, scientists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have carried out the first systematic computational analysis to identify long-established genes that were lost during the millions of years of evolution leading to the human species. Their findings appear in the December 14 issue of PLoS Computational Biology."This is the first study designed to search the entire genome for recent loss of genes that do not have any near-duplicate copies elsewhere in the genome. These are likely to be the more important gene losses," said David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering at UCSC. Haussler and five others in his research group--postdoctoral researcher Jingchun Zhu, graduate students Zack Sanborn and Craig Lowe, technical projects manager Mark Diekhans, and evolutionary biologist Tom Pringle

  • The Evolution of Blog-Blond
Class, after I finished reading the masterful post by Brian Clark of Copyblogger with the summation of his blog over the past year titled "The Best of Copyblogger in 2007", I asked myself some HARD questions. What has Blog-Blond blog achieved? How has Blog-Blond evolved? Am I becoming a better blogger or just a kinkier, lazier one? Where have I been with my blog, and more importantly--where am I going?I decided to whittle down the results in a series of pictures for the Main Stages of Blog-Blond. You will easily see how Blog-Blond has evolved-- since pictures speak louder than words. The first picture is a drawing by your very own blondalicious teacher as she was learning the art of blogging. She was obsessed, consumed, and more than a little bit crazy as her pea brain was challenged by all the new blog lingo and technology. The blogosphere was daunting to your teacher in the First Stage! The second photo depicts the stage of Blog-Blond's evolvement when she became the tough-as-nails task

  • The Evolution of My Blog
This is a really tough post. Tish tagged me to come up with a brief story of how my blog came to be, and how it evolved to this point. The trick is we have to use five posts from throughout the site to illustrate the changes here and with me along the way...Sometime around 2001 or 2002, I participated in a Yahoo! Group called "K2K" which may or may not be still around. It was a discussion forum for Knoxville/Knox County issue. and a number of regular folks and politicians alike took part in rolling conversations of the local issues of the day. This was just before blogs started coming on, and as time went on several of the participants starting building their own sites to chronicle their own lives and experiences. Randy Neal, aka "SouthKnoxBubba", was a heavy participant in K2K and also created probably the first blog I ever saw. After a few months of commenting on his and others' sites, in January 2003 I decided to create my own and relate my experiences online. I wasn't reall

  • Evolution as Fact and Theory
Appropriate that today we offer a guest blogger returned from the great beyond. There were few scientists as capable as Stephen Gould at conveying subtle, complicated ideas in clear prose accessible to the lay reader. In 1981, he took on the nascent "creationist" cabal, then boosted by the imbecile Reagan. Before shredding their pseudo science, he demolished their strawman -- that evolution is "only" a theory:In the American vernacular, "theory" often means "imperfect fact"—part of a hierarchy of confidence running downhill from fact to theory to hypothesis to guess. Thus creationists can (and do) argue: evolution is "only" a theory, and intense debate now rages about many aspects of the theory. If evolution is less than a fact, and scientists can't even make up their minds about the theory, then what confidence can we have in it? Indeed, President Reagan echoed this argument before an evangelical group in Dallas when he said (in what I devoutly hope was campaign rhetoric): "Well, it

  • The Evolution of Google AdSense
The web has evolved into a complex "organism" which, to some, appears to have a life of its own. As the Internet has evolved, so too have online marketers and publishers. The dot-com balloon is said to have burst but savvy publishers have grabbed the coat tails of the Google search monster and employ Google AdSense on content-rich websites. Google AdSense, a pioneer for providing content-sensitive advertisements, has been a boon to webmasters looking for alternatives to amortize their web trafffic. How Does Google AdSense Work? The concept is simple: The publisher or webmaster inserts a java script into a website. Each time the page is accessed, the java script pulls advertisements from Google's AdSense program. The ads are targeted and related to the content contained on the web page serving the ad. If a web surfer clicks on an advertisement served from Google, the webmaster serving the ad earns a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying Google for the click.Google handles all

Author: Jürgen HafferPaperback: 350 pagesPublisher: Springer; 1 edition (September 2007)Language: EnglishISBN: 3540717773(R)This book is the first detailed biography of Ernst Mayr. He was an ‘architect’ of the Synthetic Theory of Evolution, and the greatest evolutionary biologist since Charles Darwin, influential historian and philosopher of biology, outstanding taxonomist and ornithologist, and naturalist. He is one of the most widely known biologists of the 20th century. Mayr used the theories of natural selection and population thinking as theoretical models within the framework of historical biological studies. He suggested that various competing paradigms may exist side by side and more or less pronounced ’revolutions’ may occur in different fields from time to time. Changes of concepts have a much stronger effect on the development of biological sciences than the discovery of new facts. Mayr was the first to emphasize the role of biopopulations, ther
  • Second Nature: Economic Origins of Human Evolution
Author: Haim Ofek Paperback: 262 pagesPublisher: Cambridge University Press (November 2001)Language: EnglishISBN: 0521625343(R)This book spans two million years of human evolution and explores the impact of economics on human evolution and natural history. The theory of evolution by natural selection has always relied in part on progress in areas of science outside of biology. By applying economic principles at the borderlines of biology, Haim Ofek shows how some of the outstanding issues in human evolution, such as the increase in human brain size and the expansion of the environmental niche humans occupied, can be answered. He identifies distinct economic forces at work, beginning with the transition from the feed-as-you-go strategy of primates, through hunter-gathering and the domestication of fire to the development of agriculture. This highly readable book will inform and intrigue general readers and those in fields such as evolutionary biology and psycholog
  • Figments of Reality: The Evolution of the Curious Mind
Author: Ian Stewart, Jack CohenPaperback: 339 pagesPublisher: Cambridge University Press (July 1997)Language: EnglishISBN: 0521571553(R)In Figments of Reality, mathematician Ian Stewart and biologist Jack Cohen's thesis (or schtick) is that human minds are produced by complicity between human brains and culture. In their earlier book The Collapse of Chaos, Stewart and Cohen used the power of Humpty Dumpty to redefine complicity to mean properties that emerge from the mutual interaction of complex systems. "Our minds, our societies, our cultures, and our global multiculture, are all evolving within a reality that we mould in images of our own creation. We are a figment of reality--but reality is increasingly a figment of us." Reality is not the only figment in the book. Stewart and Cohen use a group of eight "weird alien beings from the planet Zarathustra, resembling fluffy yellow ostriches but with much stranger habits" as a sounding board, as comedy relief, and

Author: Jack Zipes Paperback: 352 pagesPublisher: Routledge; 1 edition (August 2006)Language: EnglishISBN: 0415977819(R)In his latest book, fairy tales expert Jack Zipes takes on the question of why some fairy tales "work" and others don't, why the fairy tale is uniquely capable of getting under the skin of culture and staying there. Why, in other words, fairy tales "stick." Long an advocate of the fairy tale as a serious genre with wide social and cultural ramifications, Jack Zipes here makes his strongest case for the idea of the fairy tale not just as a collection of stories for children but a profoundly important genre. Why Fairy Tales Stick introduces new critical approaches to the study of classical fairy tales such as "Cinderella," "Snow White, "Beauty and the Beast," and "Hansel and Gretel" in an effort to understand how and why fairy tales have evolved over the last three hundred years and remained so relevant in our lives. Why culture has favored certain fairy tales may

This comprehensive monograph reconstructs and assesses Schumpeter’s contribution to the restless economics of entrepreneurship, disequilibrium and search. Examining the evidence from all of Schumpeter’s published work, the book fills a significant gap in the literature of economic thought. Partly because Schumpeter was so prolific, partly because he touched on so many inter-related topics, there have been few books that have sought to span the whole of this important author’s influential insights. This volume will appeal to scholars, students and researchers who are interested in exploring the complexities of Schumpeter’s vision and his intellectual system. It will be entirely accessible to
