'Pan's Labyrinth,' 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro is reportedly in talks to direct back-to-back epics adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's ‘The Hobbit’. Peter Jackson, director of the outstandingly successful ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, will be producing the New Line Cinema and MGM movie. Del Toro's name has always been at the top of the franchise's directorial wish list since Jackson, MGM and New Line reached an agreement to team on the project. "I’ve heard some rumblings, but nothing official," E! Online quoted del Toro, as telling Entertainment Weekly. "I don’t want to think about it because it’s such an eventuality. It’s the only Tolkien book I read...I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege," he added. Del Toro and Jackson would oversee the writing of two scripts once the strike ends. The two 'Lord of the Rings' prequels would be shot back-to-back starting in
Watched Gimme Shelter recently. Quite powerfull stuff. Triggered a sort of nostalgia for some times I wasn't even born. Skimmed thru Hells Angels and Sonny Barger's website, too. I liked the opening scene, thought about Mick Jaggers' dance moves etc. I...

Well, year 2007 is about to end. We only have 18 days before 2008. That was 2 weeks and 4 days. So, before the year of the golden pig ends I will list the top 10 grossing films of 2007.As we all know, no movie could ever beat the Worldwide top grossing film which is Titanic that was released year 1997. Its gross is worth $1,845,034,188.This year the top grossing film is Spider-Man 3. Even though lots of critiques said that it is not as good as the first two movie it still rank as number 1 on the top grossing film of 2007. The total gross of this movie is $336,530,303 for almost 4,324 theaters.Number 2 is Shrek The Third. Shrek the Third movie was released on theaters on May 18, 2007. Its total gross is worth $321,012,359. It is the thrid sequel of the Shrek movie. Just like the Spider-man 3 movie Shrek the third's has some negative ratings but it still manages to rank as number 2.Next in the list is the Transformers. A movie that gross over $319,071,806 for over 4,050 theaters. The liv

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Adlabs Films Ltd said on Monday it has entered into agreements with several cinema properties and will be operating a 200-screen cinema
Sex in Bollywood films is a part and parcel of entertainment. The most successful adult Hindi film so far ‘Murder’ released in 2004 bears testimony to this. Although adapted by the Hollywood flick ‘Unfaithful’ Murder become a nationwide hit thanks to the sleaze and the love-making scenes of Mallika Shararat (sorry Sherawat). Neha Dhupia did an encore in the cheaply made but sleazy Julie which was a surprise hit. The movie was for the mass, to bait (please don’t treat these three words as single) and the junta loved it. Neha Dhupia was so much convinced about films getting sexed-up that her quote “only sex and Shahrukh sell” become more famous than her. However, these bold girls had to take back their words when Neha Dhupia’s bolder movie Sheesha flopped and Mallika’s cleavage revealing ‘Back ke rehna re baba’ had audience screaming just that. Now Mallika has been relegated to the slutty character that lusts after the hero and gets nothing in the end…she d

I just got an email from the good folks who are helping to put on Films for Food and they are looking for volunteers to help out on Friday/Saturday. Please give them a call if you can! From Kelly: Hello....
Ultimate Disney has received their copy of the Pixar Shorts Films Collection: Volume 1 DVD, and have provided a review for us all. What do they say? In short, this is a sweet buy for about $10, but until you find it at that price, feel free to pass, knowing that you already own most of it and might own even more if the 2005 Toy Story movie rereleases hadn't dropped their accompaniment in anticipation of this. You can read the full step-by-step review here.
At dinner tonight I was trying to list Woody Allen films that feature gay characters. This LiveJournal user says the only gay character he has ever seen is in Stardust Memories, which I haven't seen yet. One of the comments on that post adds that there's a flamer in Sleeper, which I can't recall at the moment, and of course there's Meryl Streep's lesbian couple in Manhattan. Are there any more?
The ‘big banners’ are under wraps for now but the announcements are likely soonIt is still hot news that Himesh Reshammiya’s ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ has met with an unprecedented success all over and continues to set the cash registers jingling. The film was not just an opening weekend wonder and has held on quite well for last three weeks to emerge as a big hit.The latest piece of information as per reliable sources is that the super successful composer/singer and now an actor is on the verge of signing three new projects as a lead hero with some of the biggest names in the industry.“With the support of my fans, blessing of my parents and the grace of God, ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ has been a smash hit and yet again proved that destiny plays a major role in an individual’s success. The offers are aplenty from the biggest and the best in the business,” he comments while being tight-lipped about his signing of films, formal announcement for is expected to come in
Since Halloween isn’t too far off and I know I enjoy watching cheesy horror films, no matter how bad they are they will usually bring a smile to my face. Here are just some of the reasons why they are so amazingly bad and entertaining.
Reason 1 - “Maybe we should split up!?!?” [...]
Some good news on the Canadian film distribution front. Play Back has news that Patrice Théroux, former president and CEO of Motion Picture Distribution, has been hired on at Entertainment One, a Toronto based distribution.
It appears the move comes after Théroux discussed plans with Entertainment One to acquire and distribute films all over the world, except the US where they will focus on DVD releases. To get them started, Entertainment one plans to purchase one or two smaller Canadian distributors.
This seemingly harmless movie business news could have potentially positive effects on Canadian film. With a major distribution company, out of Canada, distributing material world wide, Canadian film may have a better chance of being seen. I only hope that they also focus on distributing these productions at home. As it stands now, some of the best Canadian films don’t even open outside of Canada’s three big markets. I’d love to see our National talent get a little more love an
Film Critic Kevyn Knox has an ongoing weekly "Top 5 Films" project on his website Cinematheque. Just this past week he and 20 other critics, film students, film historians and film enthusiasts took on the challenge of listing their favorite sports movies. One film boxing-film fanatic listed 5 boxing movies as his favorite sports movies. (How's that for wearing your biases on your sleeve?) Some of the nominations could hardly be considered sports movies. Spelling bees? Chess? Billiards? The Big Lebowski!!!? (Nothing against bowling as a sport, but the movie was hardly a ringing endorsement of athleticism.) How do you suppose films about track & field and/or running fared?Running/Track & Field movies did not make the overall top 5 (Raging Bull, Hoop Dreams, Bull Durham, The Hustler and Million Dollar Baby topped the list), but there were a few pleasant surprises:David Sterritt, Chairman of the National Society of Film Critics, voted The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (Tony R
Something I find kind of interesting is the proliferation of gang violence around the world. Especially as its kind of amazing how many people are sucked into "wars" where winning / victory often has no real benefit. Even if you kill everyone in an opposing gang (though this never...
This is the week of the Maui Film Festival, and thus we've been watching lots of great new films. The Maui Film Festival ends this Sunday.Last night we viewed another two films at the McCoy Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Both films were extraordinary documentaries: "Light of the Himalaya" and "Truth In Terms of Beauty".The amount of work, skill and artistry which went into these films blew me away! "Light of the Himalaya" captured some great mountain climbing and eye surgery shots, and "Truth In Terms of Beauty" showed some extremely clever shots which were new to me!I, on the other hand, have been trying to do something so simple that probably most tech-savy kids in grade school could do it--upload my first home 'short' to YouTube. When I say 'short', I'm not kidding!I experimented on my cat Anela. She wasn't too happy to have my new Flip Video camera pointed at her, but she didn't run away either! Filming her was the easy part. Then I had to figure out how to
