  • Space shuttle, European lab lift off from Florida
By Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The U.S. space shuttle Atlantis blasted off from its seaside Florida launch pad on Thursday to deliver a $1.9 billion European science laboratory to the International Space Station. Defying a dismal weather forecast, Atlantis lifted off at 2:45 p.m. (1945 GMT) and headed toward a Saturday rendezvous with the station. Tucked into the cargo bay was the European Space Agency's Columbus module, the centerpiece of a $5 billion program to give Europe a permanent toehold in space. "Liftoff of space shuttle Atlantis, as Columbus sets sail on a voyage of science to the space station," said NASA commentator George Diller as the ship rose into the sky, trailing a tail of bright flame. For more than 25 years, European researchers have relied on the hospitality of others to operate experiments in orbit. With Columbus, Europe will have a permanent space lab for a variety of biology, physiology, fluid physics and other experiments. &q
  • NASA fuels space shuttle for launch from Florida
By Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - NASA fuelled the space shuttle Atlantis for liftoff on Thursday on a mission to deliver Europe's first full-time orbital research complex to the International Space Station. Technical problems that delayed the flight from December have been resolved, leaving only the weather as a possible show-stopper, NASA officials said. Liftoff was targeted for 2:45 p.m. (1945 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, positioning the shuttle for arrival at the station on Saturday. But the U.S. space agency's weather experts offered only a 30 percent chance of a launch as a cold front that spawned killer tornadoes in the southeastern United States headed toward central Florida. The front was expected to have lost much of its strength by the time it reaches the Cape Canaveral area, but meteorologists said it could bring rain, clouds and perhaps thunderstorms. "We are hopeful that the front will time its approach just to the north and

  • McCain Routs Romney in Florida
John McCain beat Mitt Romney by five percent in the Florida primary. Not the widest of margins but enough for McCain to continue forward momentum. Mike Huckabee despite having not won a primary since Iowa has said he'll stay in the race. That means he'll continue to act as spoiler continuing to deny Romney the Evangelical vote he needs to best McCain. Additionally Rudy Giuliani is allegedly dropping out of the race and endorsing McCain further strengthening McCain position going into Super Tuesday. Looks like Mitt Romney is going to get tag teamed on Tsunami Tuesday.
  • Voting ends in McCain-Romney duel in Florida
By Tim Gaynor MIAMI (Reuters) - Voting ended in a tight Florida presidential primary battle between Republicans John McCain and Mitt Romney on Tuesday that could also spell an end to one-time favorite Rudy Giuliani's White House bid. McCain, an Arizona senator, and Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, are running neck-and-neck in polls in a Florida fight that could give the winner crucial momentum heading into the Feb. 5 "Super Tuesday" voting in 21 states with Republican presidential contests. It also could be the end for Giuliani, a former New York mayor who staked his campaign on a strong showing in Florida, but has struggled despite leading national polls for much of last year. Polls show Giuliani battling for a distant third place with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Giuliani was praised for his leadership in New York after the Sept. 11 attacks, but his campaign, focused on keeping the United States safe from terrorism, has faltered as he focused on F
  • Giuliani fights for survival as Florida votes
By Jim Loney SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida voters cast their ballots on Tuesday in a contest that could anoint a front-runner among Republicans in the White House race and spell trouble for onetime favorite former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani staked his campaign on a strong showing in Florida after largely ignoring other states that kicked off the party nominating process to determine candidates for the November U.S. presidential election. But polls have shown Giuliani trailing both nationally and in this state with a large population of retired New Yorkers as rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney picked up momentum from wins in states that voted earlier this month. At a delicatessen in a Miami suburb on Tuesday morning, Giuliani talked optimistically about moving on to other states after the Florida contest. "We are going to win today," he said flatly. "Polls and predictions have been wrong." Voting is scheduled to wrap up at 7 p.m
  • Giuliani in trouble as Florida Republicans vote
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Rudy Giuliani's White House quest could be in deep trouble as he lags far behind the leaders in a Florida presidential primary he counted on winning, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Tuesday. Hours before the start of Florida's voting, Arizona Sen. John McCain held a slim 4-point lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 35 percent to 31 percent, in what was essentially a two-man race, the poll found. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, was battling former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for a distant third place finish in Florida. Both registered 13 percent. The margin of error in the poll was 3.3 percentage points. Giuliani had staked his campaign on a strong Florida showing after pulling out of other early voting states, but he has drifted down in national and state polls for weeks as the drama of an intensely contested Republican race passed him by. "The race h
  • McCain, Romney lob 'liberal' smear in Florida push
By Jason Szep and Tim Gaynor JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Reuters) - In a tight battle in Florida, John McCain and Mitt Romney competed to stick each other with the "liberal" tag, a harsh smear among conservative Republicans whose votes could be decisive in Tuesday's voting for presidential contenders. Republican candidates scrambled in buses and jets across the nation's fourth-largest state on Monday in a final hunt for votes on the eve of their biggest nomination test yet in the most wide open White House race in more than 50 years. The winner could ride a wave of momentum into "Super Tuesday" on Feb. 5 when 22 states vote in a blitz of primaries that could anoint a Republican front-runner to contest November's election to succeed President George W. Bush. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, branded three of McCain's signature pieces of legislation -- on energy, immigration and campaign finance reform -- as "liberal." He also sought to associate the

  • Florida churches just love Snipes
At about 7 a.m. Monday, before heading for the federal courthouse, actor Wesley Snipes joined black ministers from churches in Orlando, Gainesville and Ocala for a prayer service.Several ministers then came for the beginning of Snipes' trial on tax evasion charges. In front of the Golden-Collum Memorial Federal Building, they talked with reporters, saying they prayed for fairness, deliverance and God's favor. The Rev. Frank E. Thompson, of The Worship Center Orlando, had organized the service at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala."All the pastors came because, No. 1, Wes' from Orlando and we came to pray on his behalf," Thompson said."It's important not only to show support for him - but any person," said the Rev. Fred Maeweathers Sr., pastor of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala.Snipes' lawyers had raised the issue of whether Snipes, as a black man, can get a fair jury in the Ocala Division of the Middle District of Florida."Can a person get a fair trial here or
  • Bahamas: "If Florida [legislators] repeals the sales tax exemption and it makes them uncompetitive, then they'll lose our business . . ."
Bahamians encouraged to join fight to keep Fla. tax exemption: By INDERIA SAUNDERS,Guardian Staff Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: A hike in prices on goods imported from the Sunshine State may be looming as Florida legislators debate repealing an exemption on the six-percent sales tax directed at foreign importers — a concession that has made Florida the top supplier to Bahamian businesses. The legislative move may come as early as this year and in the midst of an economic downturn in the state's economy, said Adam Hasner, the Majority Leader in the Florida House of Representatives He was in Nassau yesterday trying to enlist the help of local businesses in the fight against the Democrat-led initiative. He fears that if the concession is removed and enough regional importers decide to take their business elsewhere, his state's economy will fall further into what increasingly appears to be recession. At a Bahamas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Hasner argued that possible develop
  • McCain Leading in Florida Polls
But only within the margin of error. According to recent poll by the St. Petersburg Times Romney and McCain are now statistically tied after Thompson exited the race. Apparently two out of the seven percent of Thompson supporters went McCain's way. Why? I've given this a lot of thought and I am convinced that there is only one possible explanation for their defecting to McCain. They just really dig geezers. In truth I think it has to do with authenticity. Because whether or not you love or hate Thompson you have to admit that he is what he is. The same can be said for McCain. So while Romney picked up the three percent of Reagan loving conservatives that want to back a potential winner that isn't John McCain. McCain picked up the two percent of supporters that want a leader rather than a politician. End result? A tie. However with Giuliani and Huckabee tied for third place at fifteen percent all McCain has to do is siphon off enough Rudy supporters to eke out a win. And that's actually
