Passiflora - passifloraceae is a genus of evergreen and semi-evergreen woody stemmed vines. Grown for their beautiful fragrant flowers, some species have egg shaped edible fruits that mature to an orange yellow in autumn. They are also widely used for their medicinal properties. First discovered by Jesuit priests in South America the passion flower has [...]
I enjoy having silk flower arrangements around my house. To have them created in a retails store or purchase them already completed can be very expensive, so I make them up myself. Easy enough to do, I just select a main flower, some greenery and sometimes dried flowers. After a few years they get so dusty and tired looking so I just pluck them out of the container and start over again. There are many tricks to putting these arrangements together but I just do it the easy and cheap way.I always hot glue a Styrofoam block or cone into the bottom of the container first. For this simple project have the following together:1. Hot glue gun2. Styrofoam block or cone3. moss4. all your flowers and greenery5. wire cuttersNext I select my main flowers, cut the to size (I vary it, tall, medium and short) and stick them into the Styrofoam as pictured below. Then plug in all the green stuff……With the addition of moss along the bottom you won’t see any of the Styrofoam.Pictured below is another

If you want to have flowers delivered locally, it’s usually easy enough but to send flowers internationally isn’t always so easy.
First off, there’s the language problem. Describing what you want in English is hard enough sometimes and it’s naturally that much more difficult to do in a foreign language. That’s before you even consider that the event you might want the flowers for might not even exist in the other country. Even if you get past all that, there’s the matter of who will actually deliver the flowers. Often it’s not a florist but some courrier company which doesn’t convey the message in the same way.
Flowers USA let’s you send flowers all over the world. They’re based in America so the whole thing is in English and prices are in dollars. Of course their selection of flowers is greater in America than it is elsewhere but then you’d expect that as it’s very difficult to impose a world standard on things like flowers.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read, beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down. And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, With its petals all worn- not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away. But instead of retreating he sat next to my side And declared with overacted surprise, "It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you. "The weed before me was dying or dead, not vibrant of colors: orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied,"Thanks, just what I need.

The other day when I was experimenting with my new camera while out in the rain I discovered a perfect looking Maltese Cross bloom. I took several photographs of it, getting closer and closer as I did.
The cluster of flowers is actually only an inch or so in diameter so you can imagine just how close I was zooming in to get this close up.
Don’t the petals actually have a bit of a plasticized look to them?
The Maltese cross is a great plant to grow. It’s fairly hardy. I think it’s a zone 3 or 4 plant. The plant grows tall stalks that develop flower buds on their tips which develop into clusters of flowers as shown above. There’s often 20+ stalks at a time.
My Maltese Cross plants bloom at least twice a year. Usually in late June to early July and then I cut down the stalks when the flowers are finished. The plant then blooms once more in late August or early September. The flowers tend to last for about two weeks at a time.

Lady Bird Johnson passed away today. If you haven't spent much time in Texas its hard to understand how well loved she was here. I have never heard her name spoken without respect and frequently with reverence. On that note, and keep in mind I rarely agree with our governor, but I give him points for getting this much right:"She inspired generations of Americans with her graceful strength, unwavering commitment to family and keen sense of social justice. Her unflagging efforts to beautify our highways and byways are a lasting legacy, through which our state will forever bear the unmistakable signature of a genuine Texan." — Texas Gov. Rick Perry.AUSTIN, Texas - Lady Bird Johnson, the former first lady who championed conservation and worked tenaciously for the political career of her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, died Wednesday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 94.(snip)As first lady, she was perhaps best known as the determined environmentalist who wanted roadside billboards and j
I’ve been reading a very good novel called Flower Children, by Maxine Swann. It’s about four children being raised by back-to-nature hippie parents in the early 1970’s in Pennsylvania. What makes the book so interesting are the complex thematic textures and conflicts. Does Utopian idealism prepare children for survival in the real world? What is the nature of the family—and is there ever such a thing as a “perfect family”?The children in the novel, who are individuals and yet linked by the common bond of their family environment, learn certain ideas and values about life from their parents. They have never watched television, for example, and think nothing of nudity. When they enter school and encounter other children who have been raised more conventionally, they discover how exceptional they truly are and this further binds them to each other. Running through all this, as I read the book, is the inter-twining of family roots, the zodiac sign of Cancer, and the 4th house.C
