The Japanese love giving gifts and we our teacher’s room is often laden with chocolates and other edible sweets from our students. Now that it’s Valentine even more chocolates have been pouring in and one student even dropped off a box with specialized and yummy puddings. This morning just before my first lesson, a flower delivery person walks in and I remember thinking “Oh wow, a student has sent us flowers for Valentine, how sweet.” Except the flowers weren’t from a student, they were from my very own Valentine and they were meant just for me! That discovery startled me a bit, but it was a very pleasant surprise. I tried to be cool about it in front of the rest of the staff, but that was simply impossible, I was smiling way too much and way too happily. To be honest, I don't like chocolates nor flowers, although I do appreciate them.I don't like chocolates because I've never had a fondness for sweets - ever. Even when I was a kid. I prefer salty and sour foods, especially junk food, chips, Pringles, Lays, and the list goes on. But don't get me wrong - I do eat chocolates every now and then but if I had to choose between a can of Pringles Sour Cream and Onion and a bar of Toblerone, I'd grab the Pringles without even blinking.As for flowers, hmmmm...I don't like them either because they just wither and die. When my husband first gave me flowers, I pressed all of them and kept them to remind me of the day he gave them to me, but I really prefer not to receive them. There are a lot of things we could do instead, like eat out, watch a movie, or buy me something I could use everyday instead of flowers.

I get today off because it is some kind of voting day! What voting day is it? I was sure presidential voting wasn't until November, but I could be wrong?Speaking of voting, who are you going to vote for?Hillary? Obama? Thai food menu : Chinese chive flowers with shrimp is an easy dish to make and reheats well in microwave.
4 Servings
1 teaspoon sugar
1 lb shrimp
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce
3/4 lb Chinese chive flowers, cut
Chop garlic. Cut the Chinese chive flowers into 1 1/2 inch long.
Peel and devain shrimp. For a presentation, you can use whole shrimp (with head) and peel.
Heat a wok or a pan on high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil and chopped garlic and stir. Add shrimp when the garlic starts to brown. Stir to get the shrimp somewhat cooked. The shrimp shoud start to get pinky but not all pink or cooked. Add the chive flowers and stir to cook them. Add fish sauce and sugar. The flowers shouldn't take long to cook. You want the flowers to just cook, but not overcook and still retain their crunchiness. When the color turns bright green, it indicates that they are cooked. Turn off the heat and pour on a plate immediately.
Serve with hot rice

Even though my daughter is not terribly fond of them, I really like to see honeybees in my garden. They are doing a good job pollinating my plants.It's fun watching them buzzing from one flower to flower. I’m sorry that this Green Thumb Sunday post is late. I’ve had a busy weekend and wasn’t able to make my post on early Sunday morning as I normally do.
This photo of a passion flower was taken earlier this week. I took the photo with my new Digital SLR camera. Doesn’t it take a great photo?
I’ve gone nuts over vines this year. A couple of weeks ago I bought two more clematis vines, three different passion flower vines and a tropical vine that I can’t find the name of yet.
This passion flower has a faint scent. You can’t smell it until you actually put your nose to it though. It smells lemony. It’s a lovely fresh scent.
