This story makes me sick because I'm an animal lover and can't stand seeing them mistreated. I'm also a mother with a child in one of the schools that has received meat from these tortured animals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has ordered the closing of the Hallmark Meat Packing Co. plant in Chino, California, where animal rights activists said they videotaped "downer" cows being prepared for slaughter.Cows that cannot stand up are banned from the food supply because it is a primary characteristic of an animal with Mad Cow disease. The Humane Society of the U.S. says it obtained video evidence that workers at the plant repeatedly attempted to force "downed" animals onto their feet and into the human food chain. The plant has been closed voluntarily since the video first surfaced and USDA launched an investigation. Raymond said suspension is a regulatory course of action available when FSIS finds egregious violations of humane handling regulations. He said the suspension will remai

While surfing the stumbleupon health page I found a link to this YouTube video which was titled "How the Food Industry is deceiving you". The actual title of the documentary appeared to be "How to get fat without really trying", a Peter Jennings report, for ABC in 2004.
Though already 4 years old, the documentary is still just as relevant today as it was then. Food industry has been influencing what we eat for years and it still does today.
Did you know that simply changing the way you eat could help you to feel more satisfied after eating?
Notice I used the word satisfied, not full. There’s a big difference. Full means, “I’m really stuffed.” Satisfied is simply, “I’m no longer hungry.”
Satisfaction is actually a learned feeling. Many of us in fact [...]
I just saw the last episode of a 6 episode documentary about nutrition. I'm so mad for missing out on the first 5 episodes. However, nothing to worry about. These days you can find just about anything on the internet that's been on TV... and oh, look, here it is! I could also find some of the documentary's clips at YouTube.
The episode I saw was called "How to be the best". The purpose of this episode was to test the effects of nutrition on our daily performances, both mental and physical. There were 5 experiments with all kinds of test subjects and environments.

The single most important thing we need to know about nutrition in the modern world is how to recognize the difference between food and food products.Once we’ve learned to make this distinction, our nutritional decision-making process will rest on a solid foundation.Simply follow this basic rule for healthy shopping and eating:Choose Food over Food-Like products. We found ourselves in Greenbelt 3 one lunchtime as we searched for a place to spend our gift certificates. Don't you just love freebies? After a few strolls we found ourselves in this nice restaurant called Good Earth.
While looking through the menu consisting of 300 - 500 peso items, the waitress handed over this buffet menu selection. The mechanics is rather simple. Order from this menu

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Food Corp of India, the country's main grain procurement agency, hopes to buy at least 14 million tonnes of wheat in 2008, its chairman said on Friday. The Food Corp, which buys grains like wheat and rice on behalf of the government, also aims to build a stock of 5.3 million tonnes by April 1, against a target of 4 million tonnes, Chairman Alok Sinha told Reuters in an interview.
By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alternative fuels made from corn, soybeans, sugarcane and palm trees can in some cases increase the amount of climate-warming carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. These so-called food-based biofuels can actually hurt the environment if they are produced on land that was formerly grassland, rainforest or savanna, the scientists said in the journal Science. Nonfossil fuels -- ethanol made from corn or sugarcane and biodiesel made from palm trees or soybeans -- are meant to lessen dependence on petroleum products, which release the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide when they burn. However, biofuels can release carbon even before they are burned, depending on how they are made, said study co-author Jason Hill of the University of Minnesota. As demand for these alternative fuels grows, farmers are plowing under forests and grasslands that used to store carbon and keep
Fast food really isn’t known for being on the cutting edge of anything. Not to mention, with everyone barely holding on to their final hope of maintaining their New Year’s Resolution (yeah, like just avoiding fast food is the key), the last thing people need is an easier way to eat/obtain greasy goodness.
The South Korea-based [...]

I wanted to add pet product reviews to my blog. But I cannot use or eat pet products myself for various reason because the main thing I am a human, LOL. Then I thought well maybe I should add my dog to the blog then thinking that is a good idea. Since he is the one who uses those products anyway that is perfect thing to do. So the dog product reviews will be the opinion of my dog if he likes them or not. The only thing I will do is type it up for him but it being his opinion. Like with any dog each one like different products and tastes. About Einstein, he loves dog toys even more than treats like frisbees, dog balls, and toys. Einstein will be reviewing those kinds of products more than anything else. Along with some dog supplements, foods and treats. Now my cat Sam is jealous of me showcasing the dog on my blog and not him. They compete with each other for my attention. Therefore, I will add my cat Sam to review cat products and articles. Along with reviews and articles by my three

"Arsenic is edible. Only once."So reads the quote at the top of this week's Food Review Weekly over at HeatEatReview.com. The Dude is featured in the Drinks section thereof. You can check it out here. The Eats section of the same has a link to a story about Caffeinated potato chips... which seems, well, just too damn odd!Anyway, hope everyone in blogosphere-land is recovering well from their night of Superbowl watching. Personally, the Dude's team is the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers, so he took not a small modicum of pleasure in seeing the Pats fall short of winning the big game (but I've just got a case of sour grapes, because the venerable Pats have denied my Steelers so many AFC Championship victories in the last several years).Cheers!
Yesterday was the Super Run 10K. I had been concerned for two weeks or so that I would have to quit the race due to my shin splints and tight calves. I had been icing my legs the days leading up to the race. I had been stretching. I had high [...]
It's official.Junk food reduces stress.Duh!Really, did they need a study to prove it?I've been using it as a fairly effective solution to the stress issue for years. Oreos are the poor man's Prozac. Sugar is cheap and it does for me just what heroin does for a junkie, bay-bee. Not that I'm not - a junkie. I am. I even nod in the mid-afternoon after a binge like a heroin junkie. Sad but true. How is it that no one else has made this connection is such a big way? We look around and say, "Oh, look, people are getting fatter, I wonder why?"Hello!Sugar. They're putting a highly addictive drug into our food. Almost all of our food, actually, especially anything processed. Anyone remember when Coca-Cola actually contained cocaine? It's true... talk about addictive. My drug of choice is legal, sanctioned, and makes business owners billions a year. It also keeps their customers coming back for more... and more... and more. Not that I think banning sugar is gonna help. Prohibition didn't work eit

What makes you eat? Each of us has different eating triggers, and some might be more obvious than others. (Rereading your food journal is one excellent way to spot occasions and foods that tend to trip you up.) Learning to recognize your own eating cues will help you figure out how to manage them better, so let's take a look:Certain places or actions.Walking in the door when you get home from work, sitting down in front of the TV or even sitting in a particular comfortable chair can be powerful "feed me!" triggers. Or perhaps you can't talk on the phone or read the newspaper without having something to nibble. However it began, you may have come to associate those activities with eating a snack.Seeing and/or smelling food.Tantalizing aromas and seductive visuals of food can get your digestive juices flowing and activate your "hunger" meter. Some people seem to be more susceptible to these cues than others. If walking by a pizzeria or a doughnut shop gets your senses reeling, you might

When worlds collide... As a technology professional, focused on the Internet, how could I not love the web site Open Source Food? If only for the name, it's a great idea, but the content is wonderful as well. OSF is a social networking site that is all about recipes that have pictures and are rated by the community. The site is not nearly as vast as AllRecipes, having only launched recently, and not having nearly as many users. But the users do seem to be loyal and active, similar in that Web 2.0-way to users of Yelp and in that Web 1.0-way to users of Chowhound.Originally, I heard about this site through a co-worker, Tim, who I believe is related or friends with the founders of OSF. Since you likely don't know Tim, I get the honor of letting you know. Go check out Open Source Food and let us know what you think.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia plans to set up a national food stockpile to safeguard the country against rising prices and possible shortages, local newspapers said on Thursday. The plan, outlined to local media on Wednesday, could also see the establishment of a petroleum reserve, even though Malaysia was a net energy exporter, the newspapers added. "It is possible," economist Kamal Salih, who is advising the government on the new measures, was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times. "Advanced countries are already stockpiling petrol, but not us as we are currently a net exporter of oil. However, we will discuss this." On food, Malaysia is looking to stockpile essentials such as rice and cooking oil, the dailies said. "The main focus is to ensure the supply and prices of essential items are stable," Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying. "We can't promise to reduce prices, but what's important is to keep them stable.&
My dog was sick. She had bad skin and crusty sores all over. One eye was completely swollen from a sore on her eyelid. She scratched continually.

Note: French version of this post is here.Antibes almost entered Ice Age lately. It's cold and rainy! This dreadful weather inspires me to bake scones, comfort food that doesn't blow your diet. How nice :-)I was day dreaming of scones still hot with melted butter on top.I remembered some delicious scones I had in San Francisco at Easter brunch last year. I was in California on business trip and Mathieu joined me during his one week break. We went for brunch with friends in the city, in Hugo and Suzanne neighborhood at Pomelo on Church. They served us some delicious scones with pear and pine nuts to nibble on. God those scones were good, so yummy and light that I wrote a note in the moleskin which never leaves my purse.Let me recommend that brunch café: it's a small and friendly place and very affordable.Ingredients: (makes about 20 small scones)-2 cups of flour-2 oz of butter-5 tablespoons of sugar-5 tablespoons of milk-1 egg-1 teaspoon of baking soda-1 teaspoon of salt (regular)-

Introduction to Healthy FoodGoji berries are sweet-taste, dark-red coloured dried fruit, and mainly comes from north-western area of China. In the first instance, Chinese medicine believes it acts on liver and kidney channels and enriches yin. So it is a common practice in Chinese medicine to prescribe it to treat liver, kidney, or eye diseases, along with other herbs. On the other hand, Chinese people also consume goji berries in their day-to-day lives, because they believe this red coloured berry can keep them healthy, young, and energetic. This fruit has been eaten as raw, as goji juice, as herbal tea (e.g. with Chrysanthemum), with yogurt, and with cereal etc etc.Cacao nibs contains Magnesium, Sulphur, and Anti-oxidant, Monoamine Oxidase Enzyme Inhibitors, Phenylethylamine, and Anandamide. Anyone who has watched one of the many road-trip, food shows has heard of The Weiner's Circle, in Chicago The Weiner's Circle.
